I don`t remember this singer as it was before my time, but watching these youtube videos and seeing the face to a voice i grew up hearing around markets and fairs, its close to how i pictured what he looked like, This is cool is he still alive ?
with the jordanaires!!!!!!!.........fucking awesome...also check out paul mccartney version, nice but not as good as this..although he got dave gilmour to play guitar so that not so bad!!!!!
Rick Nelson was a talented man. Unsung. Misunderstood. Teen Idol. Sold over 125,000,000 records. Died too soon. Like your folks "Ozzie and Harriet". And your brother David, recently deceased. You will be missed like all of the good rockers of the 50's, and 60's.
In spite of his youth when first recording, Rick took real control of his music. Imagine how musically wrong a kid in Hollywood can go, with all the old-school show-biz advice. Ozzie knew music, but not -this- music. For a teenager to consistently pick credible material & produce it into hits is amazing.
Baker Knight wrote a great song about teen suicide in 1957. It was recorded by Ricky Nelson, and performed by him on "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" in 1958. Rick had a great voice. The women loved him like Elvis. He sold over 60,000,000 records in his career, and will never be forgotten as a child star, rock star, and actor. God bless you Rick.
Rick was brilliant at singing and singing sad songs seemed to have been his forte...Like Karen Carpenter, he had a sadness about him that made you feel every word of every sad song he sang..."Lonesome Town" and "Garden Party" are two of the saddest songs I've ever heard, yet, interestingly, they are two of my favourite songs...I would've loved to have heard Rick sing "Always on my Mind" and "Yesterday".
Don't think the delivery is as good as when he was a teenager in the 50's. He was my fav singer in the world back then. Used to buy all his 45's when they came out. Poor Little Fool, etc.
Maybe his voice was not spectacular, but he had a great string of Hits, and was a good person. I admire him and his family and I'm so sorry he is no longer with us.
Rick was one of the greats. At this time his lifestyle was starting to a toll on his voice, I loved his work. But it pains me to see him struggle to hit some notes and go flat on others. If you really want to hear a great version of this classic go to the black and white video from the TV show. There are several in Youtube. He is playing at the guitar but the real guitar is being played off screen by the legendary James Burton who was also Elvis' guitarist.
@john9944 James Burton playing behind off screen is trash, that is ridiculous. Ricky Nelson was indeed a decent guitar player and they would'nt bring in James Burton to hide, Rick's regular guitar player is right there. It's not a difficlut song to play. James Burton hiding back stage and playing, that's a laugh and a stupid suggestion. Ricky is playing this song and was a decent guitar player. Listen to Garden Party. Ricky was a good musician. Ozzie was a bandleader, it's in his genes.
@cooltooth112 I did not mean to infer James Burton was off stage in this video. What I was trying to say was that James Burton (who played on EVERY Ricky Nelson record from 58-67 was off SCREEN in some of the Black and White TV videos. He is also on screen in many. Take a look at Hello Mary Lou, It's Up to You and It's Late on the right margin of this page. James is on screen in all of them. He is playing a pre-paisley tele in two and a Jazz Master in the other.
@CharlesStorer ..yes, but this is an unplugged version. Ricky played his own acoustic and James played all the electric. Rick even played quite a bit of electric in his Stone Canyon County Band; he had some natural musical talent and not just his voice. He could also play the piano and I'm sure his dad taught him a lot. Ozzie was a Big Time Bandleader. And, I am a big James Burton fan as I play guitar. I live in Memphis and have for my 54 years.
Elvis and Rickey were the best of mates get it. you cant listen to one without the other durin a drink filled youtube nite; long live them both in our hearts and dreams.
RICK, not Ricky. I think he got better over the years. I want MORE, MORE, MORE! I wish he had re-done all of his original songs. I read somewhere that he planned that, at least all of his original hits.
@55meds ... want to hear something weird???? A guy named CoOle (not Cole) covered this song under the name cooleguy. Talk about coincidences his first name on his channel page is GARY.Gary COLE Gary COOLE .... too funny!!! I personally think cooleguy sounds better than this re-make version. While cooleguy's version may not be as good as the original version that Rick did (almost), it is better than this re-make. Just my opinion but check it out if you think I may be wrong
What good does it serve to try to compare Rick Nelson and Elvis Presley? They were great performers with their own styles. Let us respect the memory of both of them.
I agree. I see a parallel of Ricky and Elvis compared to
Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. In both cases, the latter was more prolific and famous, but in both cases there were songs, such as this by Ricky, or My Rifle My Pony and Me by Deano, that impacted me more. I also really liked Poor Little Fool by Ricky.
@Pectoris4-------Thank you for one of the most intelligent comments I've read in a very long time. Excellent... "hat's off to you ole wise one" Take care.
@Pectoris4 Elvis had many singers attempt to copy him. Rick Nelson was the only Artist Elvis respected and liked who was compared to the King. They were friends.
@Pectoris4 i dont think they have anything in common Ricky was his own preformer as well as Elvis was!! They were both great! its very sad about them both!
Rick kicks ass!! This dude was much better looking than Elvis ever was. Rick looked better and better as he got older......does he look 45???.....NO WAY !!!! Check out his awesome song "Do You Know What I Mean".....outstanding live performance.
Met the Jordanaires in Vegas. Got to talk to them for a while after their show. These guys were the nicest bunch of guys and loved singing with Ricky.

This is exactly how he looked the second time I saw him in concert. Beyond the Stone Canyon band, going through his hits. It was quite... his back was turned to the audience. I stood up and yelled out "GARDEN PARTY"... He turned around and smile one of his rare smiles, turned back to the band and nodded...they went right into. You guessed it Garden Party... I felt great.
