just gonna play devils advocate here: but another perspective could be that it is a classic example of mob mentality. the effect was cumulative. It began with a few guys almost mocking the outcast, that encouraged a few more people to join in the fun because it was funny. Then there was a tipping point in numbers at which the weak minded could get up and dance because it had become "socially acceptable" and at the end then you had the sheeple who got into it because everyone else did.
