  • Im an open wheel fan to the max but ovals to me are a different kinda animal. It takes a very special Godspeed talent to race on one.

  • I have new found respect for Montoya now.

  • dan wheldon drove the 98

  • Another crazy thing about this: Greg drove #99. What was the number Dan Wheldon won the Indy 500 in? 99. RIP Greg and Dan.

  • @pixarfan9099 Dan was 98, but your sentiment is welcomed nonetheless

  • Such a difference between the way this was handled and the way the Wheldon situation was handled. Cant really tell if restarting the race or abandoning it is the better move. Its just weird looking at the differences in the atmosphere at the track after the 2 incidents.

  • 12 years today, almost to the moment and I still cannot believe that the CART medical team allowed Greg Moore to start this race. Looking beyond the awful tragedy for a second, I think back to Saturday evening, after Greg had broken his hand, when he demanded to be allowed to start, in a 230mph+ champcar, on a super speedway, for 250 laps, with a broken hand propped up by a special brace. 5 practice laps did not make him fit for this race, he should not have started. RIP Greg. We still miss you.

  • @azapro911 Drivers are allowed to race hurt all of time, but that was a different era than now. A great talent lost far too young. RIP Greg Moore

  • The events of yesterday brought all these horrible memories flooding back, a day that should have been a celebration ends with such sorrow.

    To quote Marty Reid yesterday

"People often ask me why I sign off with 'until we meet again', because goodbye is always so final, Goodbye Greg Moore & Dan Wheldon"

    RIP Greg & Dan

  • Thinking of Greg today.

  • Three sports figers died all within like less then two weeks Pain stewart golf pro was killed in aiplane crash, greg moore here, and walter payton dies day after this race...

  • To this day, I still think Greg was the fastest oval and super-speedway driver that ever lived...Nobody came out of corners as close to the wall as he did. I'm canadian, I saw it live and was heart-broken, I miss that guy!

    RIP Greg Moore

  • Great video - thanks for posting it.

  • This is the second win of Adrian Fernandez in a race with a fatal accident The first was Toronto in 1996(which, by the way, was his first win in Indy), with the death of Jeff Krosnoff and a race steward. POOR ADRIAN!

  • Does anyone know if this incident helped Montoya make the decision to move from IRL to NASCAR?

  • @soulcornflake1 WRONG! He moved to Formula One two years after this awful day. He moved to NASCAR only in mid 2006.

  • @soulcornflake1 He went to F1 and was one of the top guys there till 2006 when he left for NASCAR.

  • @soulcornflake1

    1. This was no IRL, this was CART. A huge, huge difference.

    2. Montoya went to NASCAR after his stint in F1, seven years after Greg's accident.

    3. The reason why Juan went to NASCAR instead of Champcar/IRL was the irrelevance of American open wheel racing in America thanks to Tony George's inferior IRL. Plus he achieved everything in open wheel when it still mattered. He won both - a championship and Indy 500

  • You have to feel for Gary Gerould that day, he had to hear the news 1st hand from Dr Steve Olvey then interview Montoya on winning the championship after the race. You can almost feel the lump in his throat as he tried to speak.

    RIP Greg

  • I was there. Sad Sad day.

  • Join my "Bring Champ Car Back" on Facebook. Search for Champ Car

  • Greg was supposed to move to Penske in 2000

  • ciao GREG..... RIP from FIRENZE (italy)

  • Montoya was uber wreckless in F1, fun driver though. Still has some track records in F1.

  • This moments are comparable to the Senna's death in imola 1994, R.I.P. Moore and Rodriguez, 1999, saddest season in US OpenWheel

  • Just Imagine If Greg would have driven for Penske as planned. He would have been amazing at Indianapolis. That's one of the sad things I always think about during the late 90's early 2000's era of open wheel racing, great drivers like Greg Moore, Alex Zanardi, and Christiano Da Matta never even got a chance to turn a lap at the Indy 500 I bet the record books would have been written alot different had these champions had the opportunity to race yearly at the Indianapolis 500 back then.

  • que momentos.....

  • Gary Gerould almost crying is the one thing that has stayed with me from this all these years.

  • @continentalrcinglg Gery Gerould is one of the most sincere motorsport anchors out there....I still remember when he was doing the interviews after Scott Kalitta's crash and you could tell he was shaken up. I like to see that human side in the reporters

  • i dont think ive seen montoya this sad and depressed

RIP Greg More the Best Canadian CART Champion in history

  • would have won the Indy 500 and continued into F1. he was one of the greatest canadians drivers of all time

  • 11yrs ago today :( RIP Greg

  • a very sad day and next sunday will unfortuantly be the 11th annivesary of Greg's passing.

  • Greg was a great driver and a great person. One of the saddest losses in racing history. RIP Greg, you will never be forgotten.

  • I still can't believe it to this day. Its sad and almost bitter sweet to see some of his best friends like Franchitti, Kanaan, Papis, Fernandez, and acquaintances like Castroneves, Montoya, DeFerran, go on to have the successful career's they've had.

Greg it should have been you that was Champion in 2000 and 2001 with Team Penske. What a career you should have had.

  • I was at this race. I was so sad. You could see the flags at half mast. Didn't move an inch until waaaayy after the prayer service. Such a sad day for all motorsports. RIP Greg from Riverside, CA

  • Fernandez won two races in which drives died, this one and Krosnoff in 1996

  • Greag was an amazing Canadian driver, the best ever. he would have won the Indy 500 and competed in Forumla 1 even. why do all the talented canadian drivers have to die!

  • @SaintBEEP I would have to agree

  • jeez, this is really really hard to watch ... :(

  • R.I.P.GREG MOORE

  • It's a shame he never got an opportunity to race at the Indy 500. he would have been amazing there.

  • This was the saddest day in the history at California Speedway

One of the most talented drivers to ever race in the Cart circuit loses his life in a vicious crash.

I still wonder to this day how good Greg Moore could have been in a Penske car had he not been killed. That guy's talent was off the charts.

  • @JRBX50 He would've blown Helio away in every way imaginable...

  • @pennst24

I know he would have. Can you imagine how amazing it would have been to see him race with Sam Hornish and Will Power as his teammates? Talk about a super team!

  • Always miss Greg Moore. British Columbia represent.

  • Do you have the enitre Marlboro 500 (this race)?

  • I rember this race sad race..

  • For a video 11 years old, this is exceptional video quality. rip greg

  • Rest in Peace Greg. We miss you, and will never forget you.

  • Q.E.P.D.

Tenia un gran futuro, pero el destino dijo otra cosa. Mis mayores respetos para Greg Moore

  • One of the closest title battles in series history forever marred by one of the worst tragedies in racing history. Greg will always be remembered fondly.

  • 1 more thing -- even for Gary, Paul Page, ESPN/ABC sports this was not a good day at all. you could at times, hear them try to hold back.

    5/1/1994 -- senna's death at Imola

    10/31/1999 -- Greg's death at Fontana

    Daytona 500 2001 -- Dale, Sr.'s death

3 of the blackest day's in modern day motor-sports history.

  • @SAMMYJS991 Don't forget 4/30/1994 Roland Ratzenberger who died the day before Senna died. Oh boy...I remember those black days like yesterday. I watched it on the news. And Dajiro Kato at the 500cc races. What a black day was that as well

  • And don't forget the death of a track marshal in Monza 2000.

  • this - 11 years later.

I still remember this even today. JESUS CHRIST - it's just to hard to hold back the tears.

for Canadians, this was and still is never easy.

  • Greg was an incredible oval racer, incredible really. Would have been a great champion and an Indy 500 winner had he not been killed. RIP Greg Moore.

  • Thank you for posting. This footage was previously available but was later removed (maybe they closed their account). Hearing the ESPN SpeedWorld crew hardly able to speak shows how much care they have for the sport and its competitors.

Death in motor racing is somewhat a necessary evil; it is not wished for but is needed every so often to maintain the gravity of the dangers of the sport. Without it, even at 240 mph, these racers are only "driving in circles", as non-race fans like to say.

  • I have the full fontana race and two tributes to Greg Moore on dvd which are very good, love ya Greg ... RIP

  • Rest in Peace Greg, we miss you

  • @djbadlt I concur

  • Didnt get to see Greg in his prime since i wasnt all that into open wheel racing at the time, But Greg seemed like he had a bright future ahead of him, a lot he couldve done

    R.I.P. Greg

  • He was the best drivers in CART's history.

Number 99 4ever. Greg could have driven with Team Penske and joined Ferrari in Formula One.

  • @18PacWest Agreed

  • @18PacWest So sad to imagine the future that kid had.. Penske won the title the next two years after that.. The team he signed his new contract with. I watched everyone of his races when I was a kid, and as a proud Canadian from Vancouver, BC. Greg wanted so bad to win that last race for his boys at Player's Racing. Never missed a race he had from 1996 - 1999.. I'm 24 years old now, and realize even more how sad that situation really was.

  • @18PacWest lol join ferrari like they would take him instead of schumacher or rubens

  • @18PacWest Its funny, I don't hate Helio Castro neves by any means, but i always think to myself that's Gregs ride, and look what Helio accomplished, just image what Greg would have done. He was great as a driver, and Its a shame we didn't get to see more.

RIP great driver, better person. Always missed.

  • @Projectekon Greg would have been a multiple champion, and Indy 500 winner IMO, he had the talent and pair that up with Penske's dominance in 2000

  • too many times ive seen celebrations be altered do to a loss of life, that had to be a tough day.

  • Comment removed

  • Who is the Hernandez guy? What's his full name and where is he from? He is mentioned at the start of the video. Never knew there was a guy with the same second name as mine that raced before.

    R.I.P Greg

  • R.I.P. Greg, We Miss You!!!!

  • R.I.P. Greg. :(

  • wow. simply wow. it's a good thing there hasn't been a driver lost during a race since then

  • Dude, have some respect

  • I have respect, it's just I posted this comment and then realized the race and what happened in it. RIP Greg Moore.

  • You might want to watch the video before you comment from now on, then.
