I really wish you peeps would be less judgemental about Steven Page. We don't know what his circumstances are, we don't know what went on in his household. It's not our business anyway.
I saw them in SF, and being in the states and living under a rock, hadn't realized Steven had left. The band was still very tight, but there lot's of places I missed his voice. Life is hard, no one's perfect, Steven is a great guy and the band is fantastic. I generally like different music, but BNL connects with my inner-geekdom. Good luck Steven.
since you already started reading you cant stop. my name is Kalena. ii have black hair, and green eyes. i am 13. i was abused my whole life. i have no ears or nose, because my parents chopped them off with a rusty fork. i am dead. i will show up in your room in 13 days and kill you by chopping off your body parts with a rusty fork unless you post this on 5 pages. I forgive Steven. The BNL should just give him a second chance. Everybody needs one, and I'm sure they know the band isn't as good as it was when Page was still with them. The BNL will still remain one of my favorite bands, as they did the theme song to a kids show I used to watch when I was little (Seven Little Monsters).
I saw two of their shows (Hamilton and Toronto) without Steve and the band just isn't the same. Yes, Ed can hold his own, but when other bandmates fill in for Steve's songs it falls flat. For example, I had a hard time listening to Tyler's rendition of "Alcohol" and Kevin's version of "Sound of Your Voice". The crowd was seated the entire show, the energy just wasn't there. Needless to say, I will be first in line if they ever have a reunion tour!
This guy sounds so nice and level headed here but recent interviews in 2010 when his CD was released he came across as a selfish jerk and was clearly still using cocaine based on his weight and general appearance. Also there's videos of him playing at bars and having a martini in one hand and just coming across as a sarcastic and confrontational dick. I hope he gets off the drugs and booze and acts like his true self once again.
Some people are missing the point here. This isn't about divorce, per se--I never said it was--it's about his neverending bad habits WHICH LED to the breakdown of his family. That's it, that's all. I'm not sure why so many here are condoning his behavior because he merely comes off as a heck of a nice guy, can sing really well and is somewhat articulate. He's failed at what counts most...pointe final!
equalcharliebrown...Wilde said it best: "There is no sin except stupidity." You mustn't have children. The man is a fantastic talent, no doubt, but is remarkably dim-witted and selfish. When you become a parent, you have a job, an obligation, to set an example, to be an example. The guy has been an on-and-off alcoholic and druggie for years now. One shouldn't be "learning" not to behave this way once they have children, as you put it. He's apparently, "humble[ed]," because he got caught!
@fliq7 Cocaine possession is stupid, but divorce and getting a new girlfriend is completely normal. If you don't click with your partner anymore, you don't click. There's nothing you can do to fix that.
Justine says, "This guy is a class act"...He gets busted for cocaine possession, amongst other drugs, while staying at his girlfriend's place in New York. In the mean time, HE HAS THREE CHILDREN and has split from their mom! If you were a parent, you wouldn't be calling this fool a "class act"!
ive seen them here in the states 32 times, all with Steven, I for some reason refuse to see them live with their current line up! Steven was the front man, he got the crowd jumping and going, it's been over a year, and I still can not bring myself to see a show.
Although I like the music, I've never seen BNL. I'm going to see him tonight as an individual artist and in the small venue of the Royal Oak Music Theatre (Michigan) am sure to be rewarded with a most memorable evening. Everyone deserves a fresh start, I'm looking forward to Stevens.
ok, i only glossed throught the last few months .. but the one thing i got was steve was the john lennon of bnl? maybe the ozzy of black sabath or the dude from poison from poison. but john lennon? the best thing bnl has put out in the last 10 years are ed's bathroom recordings on youtube, which are awsome, and dont have much steve. ed is the paul mccartney, but there is no john. maybe steve could be a ringo, who was a goof, but probably not a cokehead. get better and get back together.
bnl have lost the vibe that they had when steven was in the band! :( i cant bring myself to go and see them now...i missed the chance of the last gig in the uk before he left! :( and now im back in canada i missed him in stratford :/ i love him though!! fave member of the band!

@daoshenlong My daughter and I were at the gig in Southampton too and we thought they were fantastic. We also saw them at Southampton three years ago and I'd say they were as good if not better this time!
I agree. Saw them on the 10th in Birmingham, first time in a few years & first time without SP. Of course it's different but they are still every bit as good & they still ROCK!
Yep - saw them is Brisol. The other guys have stepped up, and they are all really talented. Tyler should sing more - hes got a great voice. "The Sound of your Voice" was stunning.
i think its bullshit that they would kick steven out just because he did coke i meen yea thats not good but he is the same person and if it werent for him there would be no BNL they need to stop all this BS tlk it out support him, try and help quit and bring him back cause its not BNL without steven page
...i just realized steve left. and i cried. ive been listening to these guys since i was a little kid, and have loved them throughout my life. this is probably the most depressing thing ive ever heard :'(
I saw them tonight at Radio City and it made me so incredibly sad, because though they're still such a great band, Steve's vocals were so amazing, nobody else can even come close. It got even worse when we were driving home, listening to all their old albums. When "What a Good Boy" came on I nearly started crying, because he's so amazing, and there's a different sort of feel without his voice )':
i must say that the information presented here is much greater and far more influential then the "Rush-Beyond the Lighted Stage" documentary, although it was unfortunate to not hear the input of all 3 band members.
Oh, man, I used to love these guys. Still have "Stunt" in my collection. Sorry to hear about Steven's coke habit. I hope he's doing better. Wondering when the solo effort will surface? I look forward to hearing what he has to say.
i think that BNL will never b the same and probably wont b as good im not saying that i think steve is better i just think that its not BNL without steve and ed together because those 2 together sound really great and make really great music there is just no other band like them and probably never will b. steve will b missed and i hope they do get bak together
What a remarkably well spoken, bright guy he is. In my mind, he was the John Lennon of the two...raw, unbridled talent that was the more creative of the two. Ed is obviously the energetic go getter who is just like McCartney. I prefer most of Steve's songs to Ed's (with exceptions) because I think they are just better written, none of the simpler A/B rhyming that Ed seemed to dip into a bit too much. One things for certain... I'll miss 'em.
I saw the "new" BNL last night in Charlotte, NC. I knew Steven wouldn't be there. I knew I was going to be soooo disappointed. ...and I was...I am begging you Steven, please come back! I have seen you at least 12x. I am from Buffalo and I saw you in Toronto and Buffalo. I also had drinks with you and the band in Anapolis in '92??? when you were trying to break into the Southern part of the US. My favorite song is Good Boy---all of my faves were the ones you sang! Gordon reunion pleeeeez!
I saw them on the 31st in Raleigh. They were fantastic! They have proven they can perform without Steven, but I would love to see him back with the band at some point. It was my first time seeing them though.
Ed is what stirs the coffee for BNL, but Steven will be missed - Their banter on stage will likely suffer, but will still love the band - Ed is genius
I just saw Barenaked Ladies live tonight, they were spectacular! Page has a well known drug addicted and screwed the group over too many times to count. I'm glad they parted ways. The group is better as just the four. But hey that's just my thoughts.
@rocknroller1986 I saw them friday at red rocks, they were still funny. and Ed did a good job covering the songs page sang, but I page has such a distinct voice it just wasn't the same. I hope he eventually tours with them once more so I can see BNL at their finest.
@SHURE75 You are obviously an American. It shows based on your lack of music from another Country. Bare Naked Ladies are from Ontario, Canada. Ontario being a Province, not a state. And I see you are a RUSH fan, guess what, they are Canadian as well! MORON!
@mhinc25 ....... and you are most certainly Canadian. No "general" sense of humour followed by a quick knee-jerk, low rent reaction to anything you precieve to be American.
OF COURSE i know who the fucking BNL's are!. Have many of their cd's and have seen them live a few times , WAS just joking around.
I think why it bothers the fans so much is because the BNL are a 'REAL' band. They are down to earth and fan picked up on that. They were the 'average joe' band that all the fans felt like were good friends.
We will all miss Steven Page, he and his band have brought Canadian music so far from where it was before they started. Looking forward to his solo music however!
Reminds me of when Peter, Paul and Mary broke up after Peter Yarrow exposed himself to a young groupie.......they, too, gave every reason for the break-up except what was the truth, which was, the incident hurt their image. Steven Page is giving every reason for breaking up with the BNL other than the actual one, which was he was charged with cocaine possession, and the BNL are a band with a clean image. And Jian Ghomeshi is letting him get away with it. Shame, Jian. The truth will set you free.
he deserved to be released, they were supposed to play a childrens family gig and he was to druged out and they had to cancel.Pretty sad i think.his talent shouldn't be wasted on drugs!
@panzerducky It's pretty simple actually... (Good) musicians are genearally emotionally out of whack, sensitive, depressed sometimes... which is great for writing excellent songs but sucks for day to day living... Drugs make you forget about it and feel a lot better, so musicians find them helpful and end up getting hooked...
This is so hard to listen to because it's like my best friend telling me why we're not friends anymore. I saw him last summer play just alone and just saw the other four play. It's so hard. "You Ran Away" kills me. Every time. I don't want to say that it's about this, but I can't imagine it not being.
Steven Page, I wish you the best. I'm definitely still grieving, but thanks for the high five last summer.
Why does this guy have a radio show? He is like the Jimmy Fallon of Canadian radio. After you listen and watch you ask yourself: "Why does he have a show again?" I really wish Page didn't leave the band. I am a life long BNL fan. It will never be the same without him. But, I do like their new song.
they will never survive without him they just don't have the voices. there new cd without him sucked (ed )dos'nt have the voice he is good back up thats it
They put a childerens CD out, then a week later he gets busted for hookers and blow......he did the right thing by leaving the band....when the heat cools down he forsure will make a return.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
screw him. i thought he was such a cool dude for so long and turned on all these people to him and ed. well, he is just a douchebag. or maybe don't write songs for kids and do coke. writing songs for kids and doing coke=douchebag
Have a fruit roll-up! Aren't you gonna eat it? OH FOR CHRISTS SAKE!
Ed: "Lady, you're an idiot!"
haha BNL was such a HUUUGE part of my growing up back in the 90's. I saw them in 1999 @ Pine Knob, and all of the sudden these two drunk chicks just started dancing with me! Unfortunately, later in the night, so did a fat drunk guy.... That was also the night I got into an 18+ area of then-Pine Knob. In 1999 I was 12.
For now it appears that this is amicable and I really do hope it stays that way. Steven was classy in this interview and the remaining members have been in theirs. The fact is, BNL is bigger than any one person and if the guys give it a real try, the band will succeed. They all have so much to be proud of and I wish them all the best. I've been with them since Gordon and I will continue to follow them.
i am so upset that steve left them, but maybe it really was the best thing for him, not having all the pressure. its scaring me how skinny he is in thins interview, though, does anyone else see that?
The new CD at the end of the month will be the deciding factor. I see them splitting if it goes badly. I've been with them since the beginning as well but I saw them slipping after EtE. I'd hate for them to go down but. However, I foresee him going back if they don't break up though. I don't think he or them will do too well apart.
Why in the world does Gian have a pop filter in front of his mic doesn't he know that its a dynamic mic and the pop filter is actually doing nothing

The good news is that Steven's new single "Indecision" was released July 27th and new album "Page One" comes out September 28th.

But hey that's just my thoughts.
rocknroller1986 1 year ago
@rocknroller1986 I saw them friday at red rocks, they were still funny. and Ed did a good job covering the songs page sang, but I page has such a distinct voice it just wasn't the same. I hope he eventually tours with them once more so I can see BNL at their finest.

SHURE75 1 year ago
@SHURE75 You are obviously an American. It shows based on your lack of music from another Country. Bare Naked Ladies are from Ontario, Canada. Ontario being a Province, not a state. And I see you are a RUSH fan, guess what, they are Canadian as well! MORON!
mhinc25 1 year ago 2
@mhinc25 ....... and you are most certainly Canadian. No "general" sense of humour followed by a quick knee-jerk, low rent reaction to anything you precieve to be American.
OF COURSE i know who the fucking BNL's are!. Have many of their cd's and have seen them live a few times , WAS just joking around.
Lighten up hockeypuck.

I didn't realize that The people who sang the Theme tune for "The Big Bang Theory"
were a band but I looked up the lyrics to the song and found the other songs by them and they are awesome!
Sammy1011x 1 year ago

RaguelAngelofBalance 1 year ago
why is it that so many people who become big turn to drugs. I think Steven leaving will help keep the image of The Barenaked Ladies clean
panzerducky 1 year ago

But, I do like their new song.

haha BNL was such a HUUUGE part of my growing up back in the 90's. I saw them in 1999 @ Pine Knob, and all of the sudden these two drunk chicks just started dancing with me! Unfortunately, later in the night, so did a fat drunk guy.... That was also the night I got into an 18+ area of then-Pine Knob. In 1999 I was 12.
spxmet 1 year ago
For now it appears that this is amicable and I really do hope it stays that way. Steven was classy in this interview and the remaining members have been in theirs. The fact is, BNL is bigger than any one person and if the guys give it a real try, the band will succeed. They all have so much to be proud of and I wish them all the best. I've been with them since Gordon and I will continue to follow them.
ChrisB176 1 year ago
i am so upset that steve left them, but maybe it really was the best thing for him, not having all the pressure. its scaring me how skinny he is in thins interview, though, does anyone else see that?
jazzelineknox 1 year ago
The new CD at the end of the month will be the deciding factor. I see them splitting if it goes badly. I've been with them since the beginning as well but I saw them slipping after EtE. I'd hate for them to go down but. However, I foresee him going back if they don't break up though. I don't think he or them will do too well apart.
