@Embryonicboy All punk songs have power chords, that's the finger positions he has. You can put that anywhere on the neck and it sounds heavy and cool. A little distortion can help too ^_^

@Ragash91 actually C flat actually does exist (i.e. the c flat major scale).. the c flat major scale is sonically the same as b major scale, however when written it is using different accidentals (flats instead of sharps). confusing? maybe, but that's the way music theory works... :)

in this case however, justins power-chord should be a C not a B or C-flat ;)

@hornydog18 This may seem like a crazy idea but you could start with learning basic things like chord formation and strumming and things to that degree. Green Day songs may be simple but that doesn't mean a beginner should try to learn them right away, there is a lot to learn first.

This lesson is good if you're just starting out with power chords. However if you want to match the way Billie Joe plays it, tune your guitar down a half step. BJ is into the "open" sort of power chords, e.g. E5 - 022x00, G5 - 3x003x, D5 - xx023x, A5 - x022xx. He also mixes in some sus chords (e.g. in Basket Case for the second verse and instrumental verse, he sneaks in an Asus2 before going to A). All of Kerplunk!, Dookie, and Insomniac was recorded with guitars and bass tuned down a half step.

well, it does accually matter. When he plays the powerchords at the intro, he playes all the chords from the E string, that gives more substance from the strings. And then he uses normal chords for the verse, and that's really a big difference from powerchords.

Both of you are right really... generally your pciking hand wants long finger so that you can finger pick (you should still be able to hold your pick just fine with long nails, with the right technique they don't touch the pick at all), and your fretting hand wants short ones so they don't mess up your press on the strings.
