in this video we have removed the four wheel drive running gear, we kept on useing the 8 an one quarter axel. then put the big block and 727 down in the hole and made a mount on the exsising crossmember for the tranny. we had to cut the drive shaft from our doner New port, the universal joint fit the rear housing so that was a plus. Build some motor mounts run some fuel lines and it should run. Thats the build in a nut shell
@Sockman88 My '87 is a SE trim level, non 4x4, 3.9L V6/5-Speed manual. I'm going to do a V8 swap, wanting to do a 440 6-Pack, ending up with a 318, but either way, I'm going with a Dana 60 rear...
i spy a chery bomb straigt pipe, do you have headers too? i have stock manifolds to a cherry bomb on my 97 dak 4x4 with the 318. doesnt sound nearly as sweet as yours
Do u kno if u can put the transmission from a regular cab 1992 dodge dakota into a 1995 extended cab dodge dakota. they are both the 3.9 v6 motor and both are 4x4. if not do u kno of anybody?
We used the motor mounts off the old New Port. We left them on the motor when we put it in and when the motor was centered we welded the old car mounts to the truck frame. we did the same thing when mounting the tranny, left the mount on the transmission and it just happened to be close to the transfercase cross member so we built a bracket to join them. We also cut our crossmember in two and made it so you could unblot it into two pieces for easier transmission extraction.
Well I don't know how similar the two bodies are but,you will have to heat and bend your headers to make them fit between the block and the frame, and cut the rad suport and move the rad ahead, unless you want to set the motor back into the fire wall. The hood will have to be scooped too if you use a high rise intake and spacer.
It will be a fun build and well worth it when your done.
Nice truck, I dont know how they fit i big block under the hood. Is it still Four wheel drive? sounds like headers but i just dont see room. Not too impressed whith using the linelock to get the to smoke.
instead of going threw the trouble of putting in a big block try a 318 bored in stroked i dont know how it would run and i dont have the cash to do it. figured i would throw that out there for yall
i got an 88 just like it just wondering how the hell you got that 440 to fit i just replaced the stock 3.9 with another bout 3 years ago and i ain't happy with it. let me know what you did. appreciate it
well we took out the four wheel drive stuff. you have to leave the end of the axel in the front wheel or else the wheel will fall off.(no big deal with some frigging around they will come appart) Then we cut the rad support and moved the rad ahead.we had to make a few custom brackets to hold the rad and a piece of steel tubing across the top of the rad support to hold it still but it was nothing complex.
oh yeah you will need hood pins cause the latch will be gone when you cut the rad support.we had to put an electric fan off of a crown vic in it lol. its tight but it fits.(any one with a mechanical mind can do this with the tools, were just autobody men and we did it...lol)
that was great , i swaped a 318 for the old 3.9, not race ready yet but for now its doing 11.5 in the 1/8 mile . next year trying for better smoky and faster times
yes it had the 3.9 manual shift and we pulled that out and put the 440 in it. we are still using the 8 1/4 rear end with it welded and it has not broken yet. gotta love mopar performance.
Sick fucking truck! lemme have it!

Very nice im thinking about putting the 440/727 in instead of my 318 in my 93 dakota what did you do for mounts and what about the cross member.

Where you able to use the drive shaft that came originally with the truck before putting the all that in?
OzniWellman 2 years ago
no, the drive shafte is out of a '71 new port custom, we had to cut it to fit.

you have to make a custom trans mount too.
the mount on the 727 was luckley very close to an existing cross member so that's what we mounted it too.
