  • God damn this dude cant string a sentence together to save his life

  • If Marten keeps his solo album for himself, I will punch my own legs off in frustration.

  • "It's less of a story than it is an expression of a mood. It's an expression of a state of mind, of anxiety. It is not meant as a pin-pointed story, It is meant to be floating... so that whatever it means to you is what it's about. It's about the meeting between the lyric and the guy listening to it." - Marten Hagstrom on Catch 33

  • ja

z.bsp. listening hat er versaut, er sagte what kind of music do you listen

    das ''to'' fehlt :P

  • I actually was on that gig! :D

Good interview though. Fredrik thought about a second solo album?

WELL PLEASE!!!! Sol Niger Within was friggin awesome. Also I'd love to hear another one-tracker by meshuggah... maybe the album after the next one? Who knows....

  • Good interview. I have this interesting opportunity to do some stage work on a metal festival near me, and that includes a backstage pass. The exciting part is that Meshuggah are playing! It would be extremely aweaome to just get a few quick words with them.

  • RE: Marten's solo project - FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Meshuggah = Math because of the polyrhytmic structures, uncomprimisingly equalling 4/4.

Not Jazz as jazz can change whenever it wants.

Theyve stated they write music on Cubase. This would help greatly in mathematically structuring the off time riffs. The band writes the bass drum first, to kick to the guitar notes then adds a H-H every quarter note and a snare every 3rd H-H. If Haake cant do er,he changes it to fit. They did the time over time before but never so methodically. MESHUGGAH!!

  • How can jazz change from one form to another. Like martin said "jazz is free flowing" it has no "form."

  • Form?

Were talking time signatures here and Jazz is notorious for changing from one to another.

Buddy said jazz has no form because its allowed to change. Its not restricted.

Meshuggah, however is restricted to the jist of the chug, per se.

  • Hmm fair dos. But as far as Meshuggah's times sig's are concerned you know that they dont play any other than 4/4 most the time. Acrid Placidity is in 5/4 but i think all there other songs revolve around 4/4?

  • LoL.

Yes, MEshuggah makes a POINT of being in 4/4 timing. However the riffs they play are not.

EXAPMPLE: First riff in Pepetual Black Second:

    Dotted 8th (open note), Dotted 8th (6th fret), 8th (open), 16th (1st fret), Dotted 8th (open), 8th (open). =14/16 aka 7/8 timing.

Do that 4 times with NO REST. = 28 beats. 4 more beats makes 32 = 4/4 timing.

They play the 7/8 riff uncomprimised until the cutoff point, being the 17th beat, where it starts over, rendering the riff "4/4".

  • Haake has to kick along to these patterns while maintaining, usually a 4/4 ostenato with his hands w cymbal accentuations.

This makes snares fall on a different spot measure for measur comared to he kick pattern.

He is in essence, playing two time sigs at once. Its an approach theyve capiatalized on since the Nothing album. (They touched base in other albums but some riffs were still comprimised, out of the 4/4 spectrum.)

Lemme know if this dont clear up the definition of true math meatl! :)

  • thats right! Tomas plays in 4/4 apparently the whole time

while the actual guitars and bass are other strange time signatures

Rational Gaze for example Tomas plays simple 4/4 time, hitting the snare on each third beat, for 16 bars. At the same time, the guitars and bass are playing the same quarter notes, in a different time signature, and eventually both sides meet up again at the 64th beat

    lol

  • most of them but eg shed is in 7/8 and the secound part of sane is in 7/8 too. im sure there are many more parts

  • Why don't you guys understand, go study some musictheory... IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH TIMESIGNATURE IT HAS ! Timesignatures are used to write music, odd time signatures are meant to write the music in a way that it can be comprehensed, but you can write it in 4/4 to

  • dude i dont have to study music theory but you should study some music practice. its not about writing it in 7/8 or 4/4... its just the fact of feeling it as a 7/8 just like you said: its used so it can comprehensed. its simply a fact that some parts like eg sane in 1:40 is 7/8 even though it might be possible to count it in many other time signatures as well but that would be soulless counting (at least for me) as it wouldnt make any sense. just listen to it once more. hope u get what i mean

  • Yea, in fact you're stating the same thing I was saying... It's weird to write it in 4/4 cause it's more logical to do so in 7/8 but it doesn't mean it's not posible.

  • Every Meshuggah song is most logical to write in 4/4. It is all 4 or 8 bar phrases in 4/4.

  • Sure. Most of Tomas Haake's drum patterns is based on a 4/4-rhythm.

  • although that can be true certain songs or riffs will define a time signature

  • ofcourse, but my point is that it can be written in every sort of timesignature.. But that's just stupid

  • i understand I use that alot it helps if the music is really hard to think about.

  • good job coming up with questions that haven't been asked 1000 times, it was an interesting interview.

  • hi guys , it was me who did the interview ;-)

    greetZ alexander andreszka

  • cool! good interview! must have been really nice to get the opportunity to interview meshuggah

  • im pretty connected to them, that probably made it easy primary.

they are realy cool while weve talked the whole day but morten is the one who is gona give the offical interviews.

  • marten is so straightforward, must be easy to interview him.

  • Good stuff!

  • sol nigger within, fuckin lol'd

  • @schwarg Sol niger within, not nigger.....

  • @YuMMie28 I was just quoting marten jackass

  • @YuMMie28 you're correct, but it's actually the same thing. Niger in latin means black,

but on the other hand we all know nigger is an offensive word...

  • That camera man at the end sucks. Yea, turn away when fred does some sweet scale/sweep stuff, ugh.

  • "fredrik released sol nigger within..uh sol neeger within"

  • LOL

  • Sol Niger Within 2

    that would be too good

  • when they were mentioning side projects did the interviewer say smashing pumpkins?

  • Right on, good interview. Thanks a lot.
