Sadly, this band broke up before I really knew anything about them. But I did get to see Ben's show a couple years ago. Amazingly, he still has that energy on stage. One of the greatest entertainers of our time.
ROCK with no guitar! I never thought Rock COULD be this AWESOME! Without a guitar in it!!!!! Ben Folds Five is the only band that can get by without a guitar and ROCK!
@pearlsfortheswines - Not sure if it was because of this video, but Baldwin Pianos refused to be associated with Ben. Most videos beyond this one (made in 1995) have all the Baldwin logos covered up. I have seen him 5x and twice he has broken/popped strings while playing and gone on w/ the show.
the band must have ESP because they knew what the other was going to do... amazing for sure! i hope them getting back together is true because they could do more awesome music together. :)
That's what was so great about BFF, they all had an integral part in the band. Ben didn't overshadow the other two. They each had a moment in the spotlight. And they are all fantastic musicians.
@McGrailyo i agree and that's why it was never the same after the band broke up, but i hear that they're going to get back together and start recording a new album in december. i'm not sure if it's true, but if it is, that's fantastic! :D
@snapperz716 I think that rumour comes from someone who interviewed Ben, and then posted it on twitter. Not confirmed outside that, I don't think. Either way there's 3 new BFF tracks on the Retrospect album. I've heard 2 of them and they're very good. Don't know if it captures the magic of the early years, but good tunes in themselves.
3:34 WOW! Ben is completely surprised. But they are so good at freestyle jamming that they just run with it and blow it up! Oh how I wish I had talent like this.
@toddh1988 I saw them in '97 and they did that break down at 3:34 exactly like this...it was absolutely mind blowing to see it live, it was like nothing I had ever imagined.
Fantastic performance of a fantastic song, I listened to this song over and over again when my longtime girlfriend dumped me the day after Christmas, always sang it at the top of my lungs and it made me feel so much better.
Most break up songs try to be really deep and sad and talk about broken hearts, love and such. This is so good cause it describes the break-up of a more casual relationship, or at least less intimate one than we usually hear about in songs.
@Mazun look up 'ben folds freak out' you see him do it for WAY longer, then sings chinese or something. THEN raps, then gets raped by the band.... check it out
