I was @ a high school (Seward Park) just 4 blocks down the street from Clayton's store on Essex St. in '86-'88. He had all these awesome hats & caps with designs on them in the window that he created. He was such a cool guy, he'd let my friends & I come in to chill & chat for a bit if we were cutting class, just so the cops wouldn't truant us...but made sure to let us know that we could & should make better choices in our young lives. Not many more like this man down there today...
My feet were killing me and I went to a screening for this. I stood in the back and was planning to leave the whole time but couldnt take my eyes off the screen! great documentary!!
America will sell anything to anybody, as long as it makes some fat cat rich. We keep saying we are free in America, but we are free only as long as we keep buying what the coporations tell us to buy. If we get too poor to buy or pay taxes, people like Mayor Bloomberg buy tickets for us to go some place else.
"Little brother watching big brother" I like that and that's what I do I am 16 live in NJ and hang in NY and always have my Hi8 camera on me (Battery broke few days ago =P) or some type of camera to document what go's on. I think of my camera as the worlds eyes in my hand and THAT'S a lot of power that's why I love what I do.
If there is anyone living in Canada and is intrested in getting this DVD,get in touch with me.I live in Canada and I watched the whole DVD and it was awesome.
Clayton has been my good friend for many years and he IS a Historian like no other. Most reporters take photographs from across the street while Clayton comes right into your home and gets it up close and personal and you get to see life in the raw. The LES Clayton captured is gone now and this is all that's left; this is the scrapbook folks - nobody else got it like Clayton did. He is also a fine artist as is his wife Else Rensae. YOU BOTH ROCK!!
I had just moved to NYC... and some friends said, "Ya wanna go to a riot?" I had no idea, it was a insane! I met Clayton that night, while I was bandaging wounds and attempting to quell the violence. And the funny thing was within a few months I found myself beside Clayton in another Police standoff on the B'klyn Bridge. He is the REAL DEAL! I would kill a Yuppie to get a hold of that film! I am currently a filmmaker in New Mexico and seldom make it back to NYC. Could ya hook a brutha up?

went to the premier the other night in the LES. fucking blew my mind. I've seen Clayton in the neighborhood, he's shot me before, but I really had no idea how deep it went. This movie is a MUST SEE. As soon as its out on DVD, I'm buying it (hint hint)
those were exciting and dangerous times back then.... I remember watching the police riots of '88 on tv, and then looking out my window and actually seeing the cops marching up 1st ave before they stopped short of 14th st.
Looks great! Looking forward to seeing Clayton Patterson's Captured, the film. Also check out his books, esp., Captured, the history of lower east side film & video
