  • I love how they just casually walk out at the end. :)

  • Just two super human beings that had talent and poise. They exuded class in everything they did. The world so misses people like these.

  • I'm in love with her dress!it moves so swiftly

  • AAAMAAAZZZING!!!!!!! :D

  • Ahh, I want that dress :(

  • This is a "savory" video. =p

  • Damn, she is wearing high-heels! She is crazy good!

  • @ErrrrrrRia Not only is that amazing, but look at the video again. Ginger matched Fred's dance step for step, but she did it in heels and and danced BACKWARDS!

  • 'When Ginger Rogers danced with Astaire, it was the only time in the movies when you looked at the man, not the woman'. - Gene Kelly.

  • Dancing with Fred Astaire I would be thinking one thing: Please God don't let me mess this up

  • So classy and amazingly charismatic.

  • This is what my Boyfriend and I want to do! :) amazing!

  • that was ill..fred astaire was the man and still is

  • Imagine how great it would be to be able to go out in the evening and watch this after a rotten day at work.

  • @saxon954....This sequence of song and dance depicts exactly what you say. Ginger is having the rottenist day of her life. She gets fired. But then, after this dance, is re-hired. In "Follow the Fleet"...the film before "Swing Time"...director Sandrich has her fired too, in a very well acted sequence. But things don't get patched up really until the very end of that film.....in one of the truly greatest paired dances of the 20th century..."Let's Face the Music and Dance".

  • I am in my seventies now, but I have loved Ginger Rogers since I was six. She did everything the amazing Fred Astaire did but she did it backwards.

  • @onebaud1 and in high heels, too.

  • I keep re-playing this, it's briliant! Can't take my eyes off their feet!

  • Bravo!! Nothing like today's booty shake, no talent garbage. This is REAL talent!

  • nice video :

  • god damn, that's EPIC!

fred & ginger are irreplacable, but we're long overdue for someone like them to bring ClassyBack -- before we all die MTV brainrot :(

  • i love ginger but there's something about fred that she doesn't have, they're both doing the same steps but he has such an energy about him. either way they're the best dancing duo this world has ever seen!

  • @AlexandraPhoebe89 probably the tap shoes ;D

  • remember ginger rogers did everything astaire did but in high heals

  • Just bringing everyone attention to the fact that from 0:48 its all one shot. No mistakes. No camera tricks. Just talent :)

  • Koyachandesu, I wear clothes like that all the time. They are still around and classy to this day.

  • Why can't life still be like that? Im 18 years old, and i would love to wear clothes like that ;-;

  • @Koyachandesu Well, why don't you then? I'm 18 and I DO wear clothes like that! :D Come on, join the dark side- we have seamed stockings. XD

  • @LeannanStair I should < w < <3

  • @Koyachandesu you should check out the swing dance community in your area. I started doing vintage jazz dances at 16, and i tell you, at dance nights, tons of people dress like this! ;) AND it's a ton of fun!

  • The combination of elegance, energy, bounciness and, above all, amazing talent coming from this performance always puts me in the right state of mind.

  • In heels no less!

  • I would love to be "carried away" like that in dance :)

  • これも古典

  • That is art in motion. Thank GOD we have the visuals to know what gods looked like when they dances.

  • I know Fred is the greatest, but I can't take my eyes off Ginger (:

  • Really wish I could've lived in the 40's

  • In a time when people had raw talent, instead of "flashing knickers peformances"

  • ....then walk out like it's nothing...

  • Fred and Ginger just seemed to be dancing on air, it was so natural, flowing so effortlessly. It so wonderful to be able to so easily access these old movie clips, what a joy!

  • Wish I went to a party and danced like this instead of all that grinding going on nowadays. D:

  • i like how during that time the dancing floor looks like that

  • This video is popular on Harare

  • That was the time when actors actually had to be talented. They could sing dance and act. simply wooow

  • @TheMedievalBabe its true..nowdays you just need to be slim and fit ;/

  • @TheMedievalBabe There were a lot of crap films then, as there are now. But there were also amazing ones, like this one, just as there are now. People only think films were better in general because people have forgotten about the shit ones.

  • @MrOdsplut That's right. But I don't talk about films in general but about actors. I won't say that there r no good actors left but maybe not only in Hollywood. That place seems more like a catwalk to me. Lot's of people work hard to realize their dreams and to be on stage without being noticed by the crowd or being idolized by the medias. They maybe don't look as hot as some latest Film-hit beauties but they can act and sing and dance like hell. And that is what matters. In my opinion. :-)

  • @MrOdsplut I'm totally with you. When people think about the 30s/40s/50s, they only remember the good films, not the crappy ones. I mean this year has had some amazing films... Drive, The Artist, 50/50, The Help, The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo, Red State, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Crazy Stupid Love, Tin-tin, there's literally something for everyone but STILL people complain. If people learn anything from these older happy go-lucky films, surely it's to look on the bright side of life.

  • @TheMedievalBabe Yeah, kinda like now.

they were a bunch of hacks back then too who got by almost entirely on looks if they were female. well, some of them, like Marilyn, Jayne, Liz, etc. Dont pretend just because it's in black in white it's somehow better. please. pseudo-nostalgia is stupid.

  • Years ago when I was much younger an older woman I worked with said she would have loved to dance just one dance with Fred Astaire I remember thinking she was nuts....NOW I understand....just fabulous in this and everything he ever did. And Ginger was just the perfect partner.

  • Amazing! They did this in a time before people learned about sex.

  • I have no idea what Shuffle dance is.

  • 1:02 So much fucking swag.

  • How did she do all that in heels?!!?

  • @bcount1 Not only in heels, but holding her dress while Astaire was flailing his arms, AND dancing backwards!

  • i wish i could dance like them, for one day, so that i would understand the feeling when my feet were lighter than anything else in the world. please God.

  • They're floating

  • Such Grace, Such class. Now days they feel they have to show have of their ass just to get some where. How sad.

  • 'm so lezbo for that chick.

  • I am 13 years old and I adore this type of dancing

  • @JazzyBiebs what does your age have to do with anything?

  • Watch this whilst listening to any Pendulum song..

  • I wish i could dance that well! They're dancing is so wonderful and effortless, its much better than what people consider dancing these days. It looks like so much fun...

  • I WANNA LEARN HOW TO DANCE LIKE THAT :O

  • The spats draw your eyes right down into his steps.

  • @SuperUbf Yikes! An escapee from a prison or a mental institution - and one who can spell philanthropist at that! Dancing is supposed to calm aggression - guess it doesn't work for everyone. If only the brain power from all the smart people (but not too smart) in jail could be harnessed for good, what a better world this would be. More like the idealized world of Fred and Ginger. But what's wrong with wishing for the meanies of the world to mellow out?

  • And to think men get away with stand stationary while women bend over and grind their behinds into the man's groin area.... How far we've fallen!

  • Yes! The dress! I was just wishing that style would come back. Dresses these days are unwearable for anyone who isn't 20 and a size 4.

  • wish people would still dress like this....:(

  • che fenomeni......

  • beautiful... such a true art form

  • The Japs used these 1930s movies as an example to reinforce their wishful thinking that Americans were easy prey, because only wanted to have good time and were unable of sacrifices and efforts required in a war. Jappies did not understand that the horror of free and enjoying people to be forced to live in spartan martial society, would make them make any sacrifice or effort to avoid such hellish submission.

  • @powerdriller10...Yes. they did that...and Hitler and Mussolini banned their films, because they thought it made their peoples weak and soft. Today the Japanese made a film called "Shall We Dance", about a sad salary man who finds fulfillment in dance...and F&G remain classic film stars all over the world...including China..

  • Now this is what you call real classy dancing. Unlike the untalented, bootie-shake trash of today.

  • @mrql123 i know rigght

  • @mrql123 Agreed! There is nothing today remotely close to this, you will never see this type of precision dancing again,Fred and Ginger rule!

  • @ganixaba ...You stated that Fred would need "a minimum of five years to get that good". I happened to know the exact number.....31 years.

  • Isn't that dress perfect, the way it moves!

  • In my opinion, the addition of sounds to the picture after filming DAMPENED the experience. :P It added sounds and left out sounds and was NOT synchronized with the dancer.

    But, whatever, still awesome performance.

  • so beautiful, so jealous; of the time era, the dancing, the skill, and her gorgeous legs!!

  • Fred jumps like he he can fly!!!

  • check out the leggings on Fred Astaire shoes

  • @arthurdinty They were called spats....Fred used them to call attention to, and audiences to focus upon, his feet. Still works.

  • So much talent, so much class.

And am I the only one who completely adores that dress?

  • @cnmpiano no, adorable video, beautiful dress...1920's is so lovely.

  • @cnmpiano i like it i thought of this funny song called turkey tango and his friends think that he's like Fred Astaire so i looked up Fred Astaire

  • @cnmpiano

No you're not, the way it moves is fabulous, perfect.

  • @cnmpiano

    ..no.. you aren't alone ;-)

  • @cnmpiano no and what a class act

  • @cnmpiano Nope. I have loved that dress since...well since I knew a woman who had a dress like it. And she resembled Ginger. Romantic? Damned RIGHT!

  • @cnmpiano Eu tbem adoro!

  • @cnmpiano Nope - I LOVE the dress. And you know, they oozed class without being 'stuffy'. I watch Fred & Ginger movies all the time! Love them!

  • @cnmpiano NOOOOO YOUR NOT TRUST ME ;)!

  • @cnmpiano NOPE, THE DRESS IS GORGEOUS. :D

  • my fav part is 1:15 because it reminds me of Snow white. princesss!! <3 she looks so pretty!

  • Fred was and still is the best male dancer that ever lived, but remember that Ginger had to do the same steps in high heels, and many times backwards. Both greats of all time though.

  • @onebaud1 Well, Fred was a great dancer, but the best male dancer? You could make a very good case for Bojangles, both were great though. I don't know how Fred would have done in high heels, then, as now, men didn't do high heels most of the time, so we'll never know. Cheers

  • @RennyGd...George Balanchine called Fred "the greatest dancer of the 20th century."...an one of the greatest choreographers. Margot Fonteyn said that Fred was "the great male dancer" who arose, when he was "needed most"....who "single handedly" led men back to their "rightful place" in the world of dance. Pretty high praise!

  • @followthefleet1 Well, OK, I guess you kind of convinced me. The two men had different styles, I love them both.

  • @RennyGd ...I do too. Note than in performance they were equal and reciprocal forces. They worked SO WELL together. As far as their huge sliver screen career success, Fred actually gave Ginger more credit than himself. But in regard to the creation of the dances and films, it was Fred who acted as the creative hub of the wheel. Interacting with his own team of Hermes Pan, Hal Borne, and of course, Ginger...as well as the great composers, directors, and screen writers.

  • they're so goddamn CLASSY. i was born in the wrong decade.

  • What I love is seeing comments from young people [of which I am not one] truly appreciating real talent whether it be dancing, big bands, or even fifties talented artists, Elvis, Dean, Frankie, when I see a comment which includes the words 'and I wasn't even born then' I know all is well in the real musical world.

  • LolaArmyBrat, Yes, I forgot that bit, and in heels, a truly breathtaking performance, as all of their apparances together were

  • Uh sorry to pop ur bubble but..he's dead

  • Ah, the days of conservative dressing, aside from today's skimpiness.

  • @Me2times 1930's Hollywood was anything but conservative. Try search: "precode Hollywood" Ginger's dress was probably a mocking response to Hay's code. A few years earlier she would have been wearing something akin to a negligee.

  • Boring!!!

  • @Odori73 Too bad you're so easily bored just because it's not what you're used to. Good grief, you can't appreciate something that was done over 60 years ago, before all the high tech stuff was even invented?! Change it up once in awhile and that includes changing the put-down mentality.

  • Hi y'all :) I love this vid! my brother n I r doing this for our senior dance solo. We made it a ways into the dance, but I can't find the music. We've had to use this vid to dance. :( Anybody know if there's a cd or something?

  • Poetry in motion but as Ginger said, she did the same as Fred only BACKWARDS!!!

  • @thecubanism And in heels.

This number always takes my breath away. The way she manages to be lighter than air in the first couple counts even while looking utterly astonished, their impossible timing, their synergy, the way they don't lose a single beat as they stroll away. It makes my heart hurt, guys.

  • Charleston para toda mente, especialmente antes do natal.

Fred Astaire para expandir os chacras.. Como, malade?

  • And most dancing today is just slight wiggling of a bottom, hmmm

  • 2:25 ..... "hey they walked off with my wallet!"

  • Definition of talent.......white dancing at its best

  • @fullonred1 This was an amalgam of many different styles of dance influences. As Americans, we've always borrowed across specific cultures within our country to come up with unique styles in dance and music. But nobody else, white or black, ever danced exactly like this. I don't think anybody else could. The elegance, artistic refinement and chemistry displayed here were unique to this particular couple.

  • I wish I could do that...they're awesome

  • dannnnnnng.

  • they make it look so easy lol

  • Never has there been a better pair. This clip doesn't do them justice but they dance like they're one person. Seeing them solo or with another partner is nothing compared to when they're together. What legend!

  • Wow I'm in love........

  • I love this so much

  • she looks like a Disney princess. so beautiful!

  • Now THIS is dancing.

  • they make it look totally effortless, what genius!!!!

  • LOVE THIS LOVE THIS LOVE THIS!!!!!!! AMAIZING!!! i have always said that i was born in the wrong era!!!! lol

  • BORRRING BUT I LIKE THE SWING

  • @claudia30621 Real talent seems to be boring, I GUESS, LOOK AT ME TYPING EVERYTHING IN CAPS!

  • @claudia30621 did somebody asked your opinion? nop...shut the F up then

  • Comment removed

  • @claudia30621 People are too easily bored these days (and especially in this country it seems) - variety is the spice of life, including changing up what you usually do (or tune in for entertainment). Learn to like all kinds of things in every facet of life and you'll NEVER be bored.

  • wow !

  • I didn't find anything else to say : This is awesome...

  • Amazing how actors in that time could do anything: sing, dance and act. It was a time of true talent!

  • @Bajutsuka Theres's not much call for that triple-threat in movies these days (oh how times change), but those combo singer/dancer/actors are alive and well in Broadway theaters and great theater districts like Playhouse Square in Cleveland, which has several glorious restored theaters. Most people don't know it, but Cleveland has the second largest performing arts center in the country after NY (by seating capacity), as reported by the Wall Street Journal back in May '11. (cont'd)

  • @Bajutsuka (cont'd) I'm cheerleading for them because I travel there almost monthly with friends for their Broadway Series and we love the shows and the decent to really good restaurants right there or not far away. Last month we saw Million Dollar Quartet (the Tony winning show about Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl (?) getting together for a jam session at Sun Records in Memphis), La Cage au Follies this month and we'll see five more this season. Some have great dancing. FUN!

  • @TriciaK1000 You are lucky to go there so easily, for me it's too far. We do have a musical scene in Holland, but it's not in this league. :)

  • I LOVE their exit. XD

  • Fred and Ginger <333

  • @kurthanson2005 they still are :) I remember this was the first clip i ever watched of them. after that, Im a HUGE fan with rogers' signature and all theyre movies. Too bad theyre still not here :(

  • Ahh geez! What i would give to have one dance with Fred Astair!

  • EXCEPTIONNEL ! J'ADORE ET LE MOT EST FAIBLE

    Dans mes favoris...

EXCEPTIONAL ! I LOVE AND THE WORD IS LOW

    In my favorites...

Serge Chaîne LE JAZZ et la JAVA

Nostalgie, Paris, Accordion, Dance (pas la même/not the same !) Songs, Jazz

  • omg such a huge crush on Fred Astaire!

  • This clip really needs the previous two minutes with it. Pick yourself up...

  • Yeah Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You Can Dance need to do a tribute to Astaire for sure.

  • @Kelvin702 I'd love to see that happen, and like spidermanfreak911 said, a whole lot of younger people would be captivated by what Fred Astaire could do, time after time after time.

  • @Kelvin702 You really think he'd want his name associated with those shows?

  • @Senekay Honestly, I don't think he'd care. I think he'd be proud and delighted to see how much dance has progressed through the years through his influence. :)

  • They are breathtakingly brilliant. I'm playing Alice in my school's production of You Can't Take It With you, which takes place in the 1930's, and came across this video. Absolutely stunning. I can't believe anyone could dance like that.

  • Oh man what a fantastic scene by two of the greatest dancers who ever lived. They had to do so many takes of this scene, and you couldn't even tell by their grace and faces that poor Ginger was bleeding in those lovely shoes of hers, or that in one take Fred's hair piece came off xD

  • @ChopsticksLoveMe...You are thinking of the "Never Gonna Dance" number towards the end film. Ginger bled through her shoes, and they finished late at might.

  • Often copied but never equelled. Once they were stars that danced they dance among the stars. They may be gone but they will NEVER be forgotten.

  • Love the ending when they both just casually jump over the little fence and walk out! :)

  • I notice that this video has no honors. I find that strange for a top performance that's now 75 years old with more than three million hits. I wonder if Lady Ga Ga will be a popular 75 years from now.

  • @followthefleet1

Or will Lady Ga Ga even be remembered.

  • @nostalgiarules I'm a senior and grew up on the great old stuff, but I honestly think Lady Ga Ga WILL be remembered because she's speaking out to kids, especially girls, to just be themselves and not be so influenced by what everybody else thinks. She's reached a lot of kids who just might still be around in 75 yrs!

  • And all done in one take (apart from one cutaway shot) unlike the music videos today that are edited to bits to hide lack of talent. Hmmm.

  • @theblazingangel It takes talent to edit!

  • @3960md I know it does. But I think you missed my point. I wasn't saying editors aren't talented people. I was saying editing is used today to cover up dancers who can't really dance. You know what I'm talking about. And they do it for fight scenes too. They are edited so sharply - one bit cuts quickly to the next, you can't see what's going on half the time. Not the editors fault - he's doing what the director has asked him to do. But here no editing is needed. This clip is all about talent.

  • I'm sorry to bring it up now after all that, but the well used comment about backwards Ginger in heels was in my mind before I looked this up. I wanted to see if she really was in heels. While the quote is in fact a very valid point, and at first I thought it rather clever, it did however reach the stage where the eye rolling and the yadda yadda yadda starts to take hold. Then you actually watch Ginger doing it and you say, "Fuck me dead! Look at her go!"

  • Wow we can even war on a Ginger and Fred video. Cool. We humans are certainly passionate!!

  • Global warming began with Ginger Rogers dancing. Delicious!

Every time I see this kind of videos I remember Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" or the Delorean in "Back in the future". Soooo many magic moments to visit through the time...!

    (Please excuse my barbarian English)

  • Rogers and Astaire were the two greatest dancers of all time. Perfection.

  • I agree with you on that, as this doesn't seem the proper place. Let's just enjoy the dancing, shall we?

  • It's freakin difficult to dance in heels... (WALK in heels heh) she looks so graceful!

  • Lookin at this in 2011, I'm amazed by how mesmerizing their dancing performance was. Two great legends!

  • I'd like to see today's starlets try dancing in heels...
