  • Your middle c is really far down

  • LOVE JAZZ!!!! Admire classical but sometimes the people playing are just like machines...music isn't meant to be like that. Good job piano player!!!!!!

  • you're amazing.

  • man its so nervewracking when you take the test....

  • WHY WAS LA CHEVELERESQUE GRADE 5 AMEB THEN AND IS NOW GRADE 3 AMEB? SEEMS LIKE THEY HAVE MADE IT HARDER AND ALSO INCLUDE 2 MORE PIECES OF THE SAME LEVEL WITH CURRENT GRADES?

THE MUSIC ALSO SOUNDS MUCH BETTER THEN THAN CURRENT GRADE 5 SERIES 15.

  • La Chevaleresque!!! I love that piece. You have the exact same piano as me.... And nice Distinction, Sounded good!!!!

  • wow!! i would say i like ur third piece best!! :D

  • @LiamXCh That's a point of view. Personally, I don't like Jazz or Blues. I prefer the classical types.

  • Your page-flipping is so pro

  • on piece b1 i noticed u speeded up a bit but apart from that verry good

  • i can play piace b1 i had to play that at my easter concert i was nervouse lol i remember playing it a bit quiker thogh

  • wow, those were the pieces i played:D

  • beautifully played :') especially the C piece Jackson Blues man i love JAZZ

  • @jamesdienow yeah, that was my favourite piece. I enjoyed playing it:D

  • i can play grade 7 stuff and ive only played for 1 year and im on grade 7

  • Does the examiner turn the page for you in the exam?

  • I did Grade 3 to 5 in one year! I am starting to really hate Dominant and Diminish 7ths.

  • is this 2008's exam piece?

  • Which one would say is the easiest??? Coz i can play la chevaleresque really well, yet i'm planning on doing grade 3.... =P

  • @OtakuGirl001 yeh same! i think in aus its grade 3 :)

  • i played this combination toooooo

    <3

i passed the exam with 2marks away from merit

    =.=

  • im so happy im on grade four and ive been playing only nearly a year im doing lacrimosa right now nearly finnished

and this is really great (:

  • I had a massive fail on friday with my Grade 4. I got 104. Which ruined my life for a bit, but now it's spurred me on to get a distinction in Grade 5 (which I know is possible as I've already got 2 distinctions). Thanks for posting these, now I know how much harder Grade 5 is. This was really helpful :)

  • Ruined your LIFE? Wow, your standards are huge! I JUST managed to get a 120(merit) for the FIRST time on my grade 4 exam! If i ever got to distinction on an exam i would EXPLODE! XD You have a will of steel!

  • Haha yeah, I just re-read my comment and I did overreact a little didn't I =P I know my standards are a little high, but I'm on my way with the Grade 5 stuff and still want a distinction! Haha, do you think you'll do your Grade 5 soon? :)

  • HELL no! I just finished grade 4, and after each grade my teacher lets me do a fun piece before I start the next grade. The piece I'm gona learn is grade 5, but I barely even started that yet! XD

  • i am on my 5 th year of piano and i have got my Grade 5 piano and i have done my Musicianship,Jazz piano grade 6 . It does not take 10 Years

  • How long did it take you guys to get to grade 5?

  • if u lazy then 10 year ^^

  • well done! :)

  • i did my grade 4 and passed with 130 distinction too! i got 27/30 for two pieces and 28/30 for another! well done btw

  • I have exactly the same piano as you - Yamaha right?

  • nice choices =)

  • I got

    A:3 - Scherzo in A (26/30)

    B:1 - La Chevaleresque (27/30)

    C:1 - Jackson Street Blues (25/30)

  • awesome! good work

  • I'm doing La Chevaleresque too! But it's for my Grade 3 exam that's in 2/3 weeks! ahhh!!!

Wow congrats on ur distinction. Over here, I am expected to play like a PRO or something... but watever.

  • particularly like tha jackson street blues. i did that one but your pedaling is nicer and phrasing too. i was always too harsh on the bass notes to and it sounded dag. i did well on it still though.

  • why?

  • because you only learn how to read music so u cannot have the freedom of your own creativity - for example Jazz allows you to improvise

  • you also learn excelletn technique, phrasing and dynamics (also how to make a good sound). then you can also play jazz. many jazz men are classically trained..if you have your own style you will mantain it.

  • No music is a waste of time!! If it wasn't for Jazz, then modern music would not be the same nowadays. Jazz is an extremely expressive and creative genre of music where you communicate through improvisation. I Don't like people who denigrate musical genres due to their naivety.

  • Yes, sorry i said it that way. What I really mean is "to me" brought up on classical music, i find it hard to remotley like jazz (in it's truest form) at all - and i've even tried playing some many years ago too (harrr'ys boogie/Bit of Bedlam, and others)

On the other hand, jazz lovers may feel the same way toewards classical music. Aslo, there may be a "age thing" to it as well. Sometimes you "grow" into particular genres (IE: i used to like heavy metal, but not anymore - now i'm older)

  • how come, is hard to playing jazz, boogie woogie, i cant play it

  • because u got to remmeber dont read ecactly off the sheet for boogie woogie u got to swing emphasising the back beat no tthe starting beat of the bar measure

  • in classic you can play in cressendo or decresendo or dinamic velocity and so on, i only play piano if i remeber the song, clasic and jazz. you can play in dinamic if you remember, i nothing to read music to play music

  • if you cant play, you cant improve. i learn jazz piano because my improvisasion guitar is stuck. and ater i learnign excercise jazz piano, my fingger is stronger, and i can play improvisasion guitar better

  • well people have their own preference :) with classical music there's lots of interpretation with tempo, dynamics etc. in fact in some of the pieces I play, i change the chords as well.

  • yeah i know i play classical flute and jazz piano.

  • as harry said people do have their own preference. i personally think classical is very important for building technique while jazz extends your creativity.

  • you are not pianies

  • @Shaftsus actually pop/justin bieber or what the fuck you listen to is a waste of time. classical music has been since 1400 and now its almost 2011 now and classical music hasn't changed a bit.

so classical music isn't a waste of time. popfuck is. avril lavring was popular in 2 months then she went away, soldier boy went away too, so did 50 cent and i can name thousands. but this is just a proof that classical music is better than any other music in the world.

  • @josefzachariassen i dont listen to "popfuck" just to tell you or Coldplay or any of that shit. I think classical music is just boring - maybe it takes a very gifted composer but they often had to do it to indulge royalty so they were never really given musical freedom to compose the music they wanted to. If they didn't do what they were told they risked execution. There are some outstanding pieces eg Beethoven or Chopin's Raindrop but on the whole it consisted of robotic music without feeling.

  • @Shaftsus Classical Music a waste of time? You obviously have not studied music, or you are just a complete moron.

  • @macapacka blablablabla it's so boring - takes a lot of skill and awesome talent to compose a piece though but does it actually sound good to me? no.

  • @Shaftsus nearly all the VERY BEST pianists orginally learnt piano classically. Many people I know focused on classical music till they passed their grade 8 exams and then they branched off into what they wanted to do with their mastered skills.

  • @samyoe fuck 2 years and i still get shit for that comment lol

  • @Shaftsus lool, how's piano goin for ya'?

  • @samyoe awesummmmmmmmm

  • @Shaftsus you must of persevered with classical musical then.

  • @samyoe oh :O

  • i'm glad i decided to pull out of this exam i was NEVER this good (i did those 3 pieces too)

  • I also having this exam. All my songs are SAME as urs. This is my result:

    A3: 28

    B1: 29

    C1: 28

And overall i got 138 . But in your video, i saw many mistake. For B1, the last part( wateva scales) u play it so fast, actually u nid rest. and at the first page (EG GE) part, u nid more staccato and it must be PP very soft.

~For A3, your left hand, actually u can play it abit staccato, and you can play it faster.

~C1: pedaling is correct. But left hand must play soft abit Ending is good ^^

  • lol B1 was la chevaleresque or something thats like grade 3 in australia xD. My only complaint is that you banged the piano when u played staccato xD lol not that I am any good myself O.o

  • its quite smooth, but i still can see some mistakes on ur move

  • My exam is tomorrow :(

I'm doing that b piece, I find it quite difficult, I cannot do it that fast lol, my chords go wrong. I think I might fail :)

is the last bit meant to go that fast? I think i'm doing it wrong.

  • grade 5 is a big step from grade 4!!

  • Wow im doing my piano exam tomorrow and i don't think i can play b1 as good as you :S

  • I did those same B and C pieces when i did grade 5back in 05 or 06

    Got somthing like 126 overall

  • Whoa~ Amazing!! I am planning to take the exam...in 2010.lol :)

  • Whoa, I'm taking this test pretty soon. I chose A2, B1 and C1!! I've practiced for over a month and I'm not nearly half as good as you -.-' But I'm just 13 ^^

How long did it take you to get this good?

Oh, and just curious, are u a guy or a girl?

  • Guy lol. Iv been playing for a good few years now, around 4-6

  • No, I meant how long you practiced your exam pieces.

  • Usually over a month. They make up the majority of the marks so it's worth spending the time on them.

  • hmmm im taking this test in a few weeks and although im not playing the same songs you are, you seem really really really good [ and your score shows it]

i always have a problem with keeping my rhythm steady, got any tips for me? ^.^'

  • Count your beats? No offense but it's very basic stuff -.-'

  • Have you got a metrenome? Practice with that for a week or so.

  • i have T_T

but during more complicated parts i start to lose the rhythm D:

  • Just do those bits as much as you possibly can. :]

  • wow.. ur amazing! my tcher asked to to go greade 5 so i'm here hearing grade 5 song hais.. long way to go... =-=

  • wow you accent real hardly.

  • wow i got the same mark as you :)

i was soo scared to (my previous comment)

    A1 i acheived 29/30

    B1 I acheived 29/30

    and C1 28/30

but i messed up on oral tests and sight reading I could have acheived at least another 10 marks :@

  • i only got 26 in B1...

    nice playing=P

  • Nice playing. try get the pulse more precise for the A:1 piece.

  • Thanks for sharing!!

  • YOU'RE AMAZING!!

i just did this exam like 1 HOUR AGO LOL

    i so messed it up

i got asked all the easy scales but i spent most of my time on the harder ones grr lol

i forgot the pedling on jackson street blues

    and messed up oral tests

    aaaaaah

    LOL ive soo failed

  • Sounds good - well done. Sight reading does improve very rapidly with practice, btw. If you do a bit of sight reading every day it will improve within a couple of months.

  • wow.. congratz on getting a distinction! btw i particularly love the 2nd song. full of staccato. is it? (or i heard it wrongly) About ur 3rd song, you really know how to swing it! NICE! lol...

i was encouraged not to play jazz.. =_= o well. good luck on ur next exam!

  • "What a shame for the unsteady underlying pulse"......MEAN!!!! Could have said it in a nicer way.

  • hey man, i'm doing grade 5 , my exam is on the 1st of december, i have to tell you, i'm crap at sight reading, it's my main weakness, i'm really looking forward to it though. and i'm doin A:2, C:3 , C:1 (Jackson street blues)

  • How long did u take until u could Sight read that good?? i NEED to know coz i'm having trouble with it and my Grade 5 Exams are coming soon! PLEASE HELP ME!

  • I have to admit I'm terrible at sight reading. My piano teacher gives me several pieces from the Grade 5 Sight Reading book and I have to play them. This has helped but I've noticed my progress is slow. I'm doing Grade 6 sight reading now, and it seems harder than ever.

My advice to you is to get hold of the sight reading books and do one of them every day until your exam. Also google "piano sight reading tips" and read up on that. Do you have a piano teacher?

  • Yes i do have a piano teacher and WOW, ur in grade 6?? grade 4 is HARD for me right now T.T...THNX for the tips though!

  • i would recommend reading a note book without playing the piano, just read all the notes out loud to yourself until you can instantly recognise them without having to think, this helped for me anyway

  • ~THNX!~

  • whoaaa well done!! :DD you played reeeaalllly well :D

  • did u do rockschool??

  • wow, nice choices, i am going to play A:2(SOnata in A), B:1(Le Chevaleresque),and C:1(JAckSOn STREET BLUES)

    i like how u played, hope u score a 150 or higher

    :)

  • Btw you should stop the quick up lifting in your left and right hand, that way u get highter than 130

BEfore i meant to say "Hope u score higher than a 130 :D

  • Thanks :) I guess it's a bit of a habit, lifting up the hands quickly. I don't conciously do it.

  • how were the scales/aural/sight-reading go. cos that's very good pieces (all distinction, apart from A i think)

  • Scales went fine, with some bad starts though. Aurals were much worse than I normally do (I didn't listen to the question properly). The sight reading was relatively good, I recovered from a big error very well.

  • hey ~ i chose the same pieces for my exams too.. lols

jackson street blues was my fav XD

  • i like your c pieces lots.. awesome.. but for my grade, im playing like a robot and like a puppet =/

  • Thanks :) Take all my advice from the previous comments. When is your exam?

  • well, its next year. coming quite soon. im only grade 2. im not good at all.

  • hi, i tink u play well.. Im taking grade 5 exam this tues.. very worried...

  • If you haven't already done your exam, make sure you have a drink of water, don't be nervous. Warm up on a few scales when you get into the room. Try and loosen up and relax. And remember to take your time! Good luck =)

  • i loved playing jackson street blues when i done grade 5. it was pretty laidback and cool song. and also i love the blues!

  • Cool. What grade are you now?

  • halfway through grade 6 stuff at the moment. hoping to reach grade 8 just like the rest of my family. (4 sisters all reached grade 8!)

  • wow, your family must be very musically talented :D

  • thanks but their a pain in the butt. they always mock me when im playing piano but all in the name of fun lol :)

  • Are you talking to me or pretanga? :S Most of my family are tone deaf, but my great aunt apparently played the piano to Grade 7.

  • aww... wow, cool!

  • you know those are my pieces today aug. 19 2008 from CMM

  • Good luck with it, ask to warm up at the beginning with a few practice scales. If the examiners nice he'll let you ;)

  • those are the 3 songs i would play if i were grade 5 too. unfortunately the songs would change by then. i know how to play the la ________ thingy already(:

  • Yeah, for Grade 6 it'll be a bit of a rush to save me having to learn the new pieces.

  • lol well done! :D spooky

  • Thanks. did it go well?

  • I think you did great on the volume but maybe not the tempo for piece 1 and 2

according to the music scherzo in a should be loads slower and B:1 should be a little quicker....but Jackson street blues was amazing..i loved how you played it...

p.s. im playing exactly the same pieces as you!

  • Thanks! The examiner seemed to like the tempo for Scherzo, but thought the tempo for B:1 was "a bit adventurous" lol :D

  • oh my god!!! u play it so well.. i took my exams just now.. i m playing a2 b1 and c1.. jus hoping tat i can pass.. haha.. my jackson blue street tempo sucks..

  • Thanks, I'm sure you will.

  • nice playing ! :D yr 2nd piece was well played ! (:

  • Glad you liked it!

  • np ! i dint did well in my grd 5 last time. i only got merit ): so. u got distinction yea ! congrats !

  • OMG I THINK I HAVE THE SAME PIANO AS YOU! well use to

    until we sold it lol

    you play so well!

i'm doing grade 5 this year too =]

    i'm finding it hard lol

good on you you'll pass with high distinction.

    xx

  • cool :) good luck, just keep practicing and you'll do fine.

  • Yeah! Good Work Anyway. So what were your grades for Grade 1,2,3,4 and 5?

  • Skipped 1, Merit 2, Distinction 3, Skipped 4, Distinction 5.

  • woa pro

  • i think u must work hard your dynamics..and your timing...

and the best pieces u have play is the first one..

    gambateh!

  • I messed up quite a lot in the first one looking back on it. Trust me, the dynamics were there, but my old camera wasn't good at picking it up.

  • lol

  • I really like the way yur playing this, but i feel like the first two songs, especially the second song was really really rushed, however i felt like yu played with lots of emotion and overall good on you, i'm still working my way towards getting all 3 sorted, my first one is practically perfect, second one getting there and third one still struggling with my seperate hands. Yeah. My teacher told me so many things you didn't do in that piece, but i'm not sure if their necessary.

    But GUD WORK!

  • Thanks :)

  • I'm doing A1, B3 and C1. I regret choosing B3 :(

  • taking my exam at the 18th of july. and im playing all the same pieces!! ^^

  • Good luck - keep practicing daily!

  • They're all the pieces i'm doing! Got my exam on the 4th of July, im so scared :/ . These were all great, the first two im really struggling with but i love the last one :).

  • Yeah there's always a great piece in the C section

  • i'm taking mine tomorrow!:D:D not really nervous even though i cant play any of them well tbh 8-) good luck all! <3 xxx

  • very good, i'm doing A1 instead of A3, but not doing it till end of this year.

  • A1 is the easiest init :)

  • I like this, very good.

    I am doing A1, B1 and C2 for my grade 5.

  • all three pieces are played fairly well. the mistakes actually doesnt take away the quality of the pieces, what's degrading is that there are no emotions shown in all three of them, the tempo stays the same ALL the way through. my advice is not just play from the sheets, but play with ur heart too.

  • It's quite amusing, I get people telling me to keep the tempo the same, and people telling me to change it. Emotion is different for each person. To me, I am playing it with emotion. Thanks for your comment anyway =]

  • Pick which ever one you like the most, because you'll put more effort in if you like it. Good luck, and remember, if you don't put something in, you won't get anything out ;)

  • you play so well! i'm doing A:2 B:1 C:1 and u play C1 so well!!! i'm still working very hard on that :( and the exam is around the corner already~

  • Thanks, and good luck

  • im doing A:2 B:1 C:1.

    haha. (:

but im lousy in playing them.

    heehee.

  • Cool whens the exam?

  • it's at the end of July :)

  • excellent

  • Thanks

  • your really good

im doing my grade 5 soon aswell XD

im am doing a.1 b.1 and c.1 lol i like b.1 the best

    xx

  • Thanks! I like B1 too but C1 is also very good.

  • lots of people like these 3, I'm doing the same 3 as you did haha doing mine in a month or two. Though I'm gonna most likely fail due to scales...

  • Consistency is the key, practice all your scales for 10 minutes every day or every other day.

  • I'm having the 5 grade on friday!!! but i'm doing a:1 B:3 c:1

  • Let me know how it went!

  • OMG i'm doin exactly the same pieces as you for my exam!!

  • They're pretty good pieces :)

  • wow.. your paper sounds crispy...must have practiced HARD....

  • lol yeah

  • The songs r well played keep up the good work!!! I'm playing B:1 as well for this years grage 5 piano pices....

  • Thanks. Good luck with your exam too

  • I can't wait to play the exam pieces. I just had my exam (grade 4).
