  • KARL YOU ROCK!!!! btw, the KxK Guitars are fucking awesome!

  • Wait a tick... KARL RESPONDING TO YOUTUBE VIDEOS?

    FUCK YES

  • @TheMango121 ssssssshhhhhh ! Dont tell anyone................

  • thanks for the lesson karl! can't wait to see you guys play here in Singapore!

  • I see you old fender back on the rack, Any plans on ever hitting the stage with that one ever again. I remember it from the old videos, but i guess no need to mess with a good thing; being those awesome dean machines. Another odd question i have, have you ever read Zacharia Stetchins' book on the possible alien builders of the pyramids? I love modern Egyptology, but am careful to research thoroughly some of the more far out theories of recent scholars.

  • Great! Can't find a correct tab about it,now I can play that but I still have a huge problem....

My endurance with the left hand in playing those fast things is making me mad, cause after 2 minute I have to stop and take a rest.

What can I do to improve it??? When I watch you guys playing those things seems like you're doing some slow blues stuff (:

Can't wait to see you again here in Italy \m/

  • @chitarraio90 Thanks ! Endurance comes from just plain old fashioned time spent doing lots of Brutal Playing. There is no shortcut :-) Other than that tho - pay attention to your breathing and try to learn to relax your specific hand/arm tension - and overall physical tension. Trying to stay "tense" and holding your breath for the entire time will just wear you out . Learn to relax and focus the power. Its just like Martial Arts - A relaxed musce is faster than a tense one.

  • @KarlofNile Being relaxed while playing is a major problem of mine. I'm so concerned about playing cleanly that my arms tense up and I start to squeeze the guitar neck really fucking hard. It's something I definitely need to work on. Thanks for the video lessons and all the tips you've been giving everyone. You and Dallas are major influences on myself as well as a ton of others.

  • Aha! I see what you did there. Above average minds think alike I suppose.

  • @KarlofNile I hope you took no offense to my previous comment. What I meant to ask was do you use this technique as well in changing rather bland scales which I now know you do. Thanks for responding too; it's cool to talk to an inspiration.

  • @TheCorpseshredder No offense whatsoever... I just never miss a comedic opportuinty when I see one. :-)

  • @KarlofNile Fucking cool!! In one interview, Dallas mentioned that alot of solos are created by adding sharps and flats to fairly basic scales. I assume he's not lying?

  • @TheCorpseshredder As far as I know , Dallas is not a liar . He is referring to the concept of creating altered scales ; a technique that we have found yeilds newfound tonal possibilities in the usually somewhat harmonically constricted idiom of Death metal .

  • Sacrefice unto kebab

  • You might have the coolest collection of guitars ever my friend. Those spear-headed V's are just incredible! 8-o

  • HEY KARL! , First off Excellent vid on the riff for this song, One of my favs!

but what i really wanted to ask was Other than the heavy gauge strings, marshall amps and duncan pickups, what contributes to that heavy crunch your tone has? Do you run any overdrives? or so?

Cant wait for the new record!!

    Mick

  • Karl, thanks for the precious upload! It's an amazing experience to learn from a death metal god. I hope to see more videos like this in the future.

  • is that a custom shop Dean Flying V? with scalloped frets? is it a baritone or normal scale?

  • @LWRCftw Yes. Dean USA Custom V with scalloped Frets - normal scale tuned to drop A - made with loving care by Dean Zelinksi himself . That guitar rules .

  • Hey Karl, what are the main scales, arpeggios, chords, etc. that you use for soloing or jamming? I would imagine a ton of harmonic minor.

  • @TheCorpseshredder Yes , an Avanalance worth of 5th mode Harmonic Minor ; and also generous amounts of assorted varities of Completely Obscure Exotic Scales .

  • Any idea when new album comes out?

  • @Davidguitarify Hopefully AFTER we finish working on it . ~ damn Deadlines ~

  • @KarlofNile will it be pure death metal or?

  • @MuggerFugger665 I suppose that depends on one's definition of "Death Metal Purity"

  • @KarlofNile I think he wants to know if that album was in the lineage of the precedents or if it changed really the style of Nile, like last Morbid Angel's shit.

  • @DanteMelancholia hahahhaha. Fear Not. Its 100 % a Nile record - shredding guitars , blast beats , supreme drumming , inhuman growls , epic and Exotic instrumentation and songs that will crush you .

  • @KarlofNile Pure win.

  • @KarlofNile Hellyeah, great ! Fuck, I already got erection now ! So, you don't begin to worship Rob Zombie and Marylin Manson hahaha.

  • @DanteMelancholia Who ? Are those movie people or something ?

  • @KarlofNile These are two artists of Industrial Metal which influenced the last Morbid Angel's album ;)

  • @KarlofNile I believe in you :P You're my last hope, sooo many good death metal bands release weak albums nowadays :(

  • @Infin1tas Yes, it is sad to watch our Heroes Flounder .

  • @KarlofNile Well, by pure death metal I mean a classic Nile record.

  • I'm trying this in drop D and those pink barre's from the intro riff are just impossible! maybe a lower tuning would help.. well fuck it i will just play it with my ring finger

  • what gauge strings do you use?

  • Please come to malta death fest

  • hey karl, just a short question about your 7-string: do you have it tuned to A-E-A-D-G-B-E or A-E-A-D-F#-B-E because you're used to the 6-string-drop-a? thanks in advance and i'm very curious to hear the new material, hope to see you on tour in germany! greets :)

  • @5h0u73r my 7 is AEADGBE . It does change the chord shapes of the Drop A Nile chords - So I think of the guitar as being in Drop Tuning if I am looking at the guitar from the low strings - and think of the guitar like a Normal E to E when looking at the neck from the high strings .

  • New album. Fuck yeah! Now we just need a new Necrophagist album!!!!!!!

  • Hello Karl, just curious as to if you're going to be putting up any more videos? Hope the new album is coming along swimmingly in the waters where the reptiles lurk.. cheers!

  • @IronGuitarist Well, at the moment , we are neck deep in Guitar solos for the new Nile Album......so viddies will have to waita wile. :-) Crocodile .

  • @KarlofNile How was is living in Greenville?

  • @KarlofNile That's right Karl, give me more material and hurdles before i even know how to play three Nile solos! Haha. Keep up the good work, guys!

  • Hey Karl I'm new in the death metal genre any certain scale you can recommend for soloing?

  • @PowerOfTheNutCasE Which scales ? All of 'em . And None of 'em .

  • @PowerOfTheNutCasE if i'm not mistaken, Nile usually uses Harmonic Minor and Diminished scales for soloing. not sure though. but just use whatever sounds good to you. whether that be penatonic or diminished or mixolydian or whatever.

  • I`m learning it on a drop B tuned, ACOUSTIC guitar. Doesn`t sound as good. But i can`t tune it to drop A, cause the strings will flop around like spaghetti. I love this band...

  • I'm learning this song right now thanks to this vid and making good progress. It is WAY different than any tab I've seen on the net, haha! But it's definitely a tough one to figure out by ear so I'm not taking anything away from the tabbers. Thanks for the awesome video and I will see you guys in Grand Rapids with HOUR OF PENANCE! (btw you guys should be playing last)

  • I tried learning this song... I've learned half of it so far and my arms are in intense pain. But I know it's all going to be worth it!

  • You are such a cool guy Karl. My biggest inspiration :)

  • That tone...fuck.

  • Karl what Tubes do you use in your heads any preferences?

  • @Mas10 Right now there are Groove Tubes in my Marshalls and Sino's in my Splawns .

  • fuck your a beast . i bet you walk around to the 4th arra of dagon breakdown its like your musical aura \m/

  • you should do more sweeping

  • @b0doob0d ~ in Towelie voice ~ YOU should do more sweeping .

  • @KarlofNile Just wondering, what amp are you using in this video?

  • karl looks cool with a beard... Just sayin'...

  • Regards, Karl! What is this wood guitar with Duncan Distortion and Invader guitar?

  • @Rognandes Not sure which one you refer to .....

  • Karl seems like such a nice guy.

  • @MrDonutboii shhhhhhhhhhh Please dont tell anyone.......

  • LOL I cant play this shit even slow

  • Are you working on a new album? Nile and/or solo album.

  • @KarlofNile what do you recommend for a good guitar pick up, for very good clarity and low tuings, for my 7 string Ibanez RG7321, im looking for passives..??

  • @Caseyviolette1992 Seymour Duncan !

  • @KarlofNile what model, for 7 string??

  • @Caseyviolette1992 I am fond of the Duncan Invader 7 for the Bridge , and the Duncan Full Shred 7 for the neck. In Black .

  • Hey Karl, what string gauges do you use? In one interview you said that you use .70s for the low A, is that correct? Seems extremely thick.

Anyway, thanks a ton for the lesson, awesome as usual. Can't wait for the next Nile album, and the next solo album from you.

  • Holy balls I love the way you write/play.

  • more videos please :D

  • i ll never as good as u guys:(

  • holy shit didn't even realize you had a youtube channel must add to friends and subscribe YES!

  • I love the aggressive passion you have when you play. Looking forward to the new Nile album. I hope I can catch you guys on tour!

  • KARL, Y U NO UPLOAD MOAR VIDEOS?!?

  • I love Nile and I love your guitar playing. I would love to see Nile live. Is there any chance of Nile coming to Arkansas within the next year? I know quite a few that would to see ya'll live.

  • awesome song. Definitely one of my favorites on one of my favorite death metal albums and it always slays live. Your solo work is also incredible. Thanks for being an inspiration; Nile's one of the main reasons I started playing guitar and learning more exotic scales. I really can't thank you enough, man.

  • Hey Karl! I was wondering... Could yo do a tutorial about proper Death Metal growling? :D

  • I would also like to see a new solo album. Your solo work is sick

  • Good thing the strings are so thick.. I bet you'd break a lot of thinner ones with that brutality of picking, lol! That's Death Metal right there!

  • Dean should release this as a Signature model!

  • Are this Fender Stratocasters to the right? Do you have them on some of your recordings? What pickup configuration do they have. Greets, saw you on the Kafir tour in germany :)

  • @ziuzidion Yes, that is my Fender Strat you see in the guitar rack. It has a Seymour Duncan in the bridge , and a Single coil in the neck. I cant remember which Duncan Sngle coil anymore. That is the guitar that did all the early NephrenKa Black Seeds era touring.

  • @KarlofNile cool, either it's a Yngwie Signature because of the scalloped neck or your customized one :) What string gauge did you use/ used on her? 11's ?

  • @ziuzidion Its actually a Warmoth Scalloped Neck. I wore out the original Fender Neck over the course of a zillion Nile tours. .

  • @KarlofNile how about for a 4 string bass? any vids for that yet?

  • Karl, any chance of a new solo album? I love your solo material!

  • @JimJimJimNL definately after the new Nile album is done.

  • @KarlofNile A new album? I'm happy to hear this.

I just recently picked up your stuff because i was kinda bored with playing Bolt Thrower all day. Now i've got some new stuff to play, awesome.

    Thanks.

  • @KarlofNile damn !!! another saurian album :D, hope to see you one day in tunisia man !!!

  • @KarlofNile Pauses in amazement of his work. Just as he rested on the seventh day lol.

  • such an awesome breakdown

  • Its so hard to play this song!

  • I have gotten the first 3 rifs down.

    Now the fast part...

Is there a music book of nile? Internet tabs are oftenly wrong. So... Yeah... :P

  • i'm karl from nile and i'm gonna show you how to play one of the heaviest metal songs in all of eternity

  • Mr. Sanders , First thing , you are by far one of the most innovative guitarists in death metal! I love your work!

second, how do you get that Tight fat bottom end guitar to sound so clear!?

  • hey man, how do you get your tone, its awesome! pups tuning amps.

  • @prayersofanathema Puppies Tuning my Amps ? Yes. Puppies tuned my amps , and Kitties Tuned my Guitar .

  • @KarlofNile no, what pickups do you use, tuning, and amps/settings..

  • @KarlofNile What about the crocodiles? Do they provide the tone?

  • How much did it cost to get your fretboard scalloped?

  • How much did it cost to get your frets scalloped?

  • Hey Karl, are the guitars to your right KxK's?

  • @The0fail0wears0prada um......my right or your right ?

  • @KarlofNile err.... well, looking at the video to the left.

  • This is the kind of stuff that makes someone a true guitar hero. The man loves what he does and takes time out of his day to show us how to play Nile riffs. I humbly respect Karl for giving back to those who love his music and want somebody to look up to for inspiration as a guitar player and just an all around decent human being. Thanks Karl!

  • I have a question. In the main riff the lower notes you play similar the power chords in the intro, are you also playing power chords super fast or is just the lowest note once the song speeds up?

  • @lordaere Once the song kicks in, it is a Single Note riff , not chords ; in a partial mute style Dallas and I refer to as "the Bone"

cause its like a Bone with all the meat Torn off ; or maybe just like taking a power chord and stripping away everything but the Root Note. It helps faster riffs cut through and have lots of percussive attack in places where choosing to play the entire chord would make things muddy.

  • @KarlofNile Thanks a lot!

  • Great tutorial, cant play this song even 75% speed, not yet. Anyway, Karl - u got any job besides being a badass musician? Just wondering if Nile makes enough money

  • Hello Karl. I listen to a lot of Extreme Metal and your band is easily one of the best out there. The technicality and originality in Nile is just phenomenal and I am highly looking forward to future works. Hopefully I will finally get a chance to see your amazing band live. Keep up the awesome work!

  • to be honest i think you should think of some fresh ideas.

best regard from a big nile fan.

  • i like that song very much, because its much more individual than most other nile songs. i mean you dont use riffs or ideas that you have already used in other nile songs. although i think the riffing style of what can be safely written somehow is a bit similar to this.

like for example in black seeds of vengeance the riff that comes before the strophe. you have used that kind of riff in the howling of the jinn, i think the blessed dead, kem khefa khesef,...

  • Hey Karl, nice video. I noticed that your guitar has scalloped frets. Do all of your guitars have a scalloped fretboard and does that make it easier to play faster?

  • @Scoffman5150 Nope , scallops do not make it easier to play faster . Scallops make it harder to play faster. Legato is a bitch , and tapping a pain in the ass. But, scallops do give more control ; bends , vibratos and expressive micro pitch control -are much more "controllable" . Also ,The tone difference from the strings NOT touching wood - just metal string wire on metal fret is addicitive.

  • @KarlofNile Oh ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me. Keep on Rockin'!! (or Metalin', which ever one you prefer, lol)

  • Karl are you using sd invaders?

  • @SuperDzuko Yes I am :-)

  • @KarlofNile The sound is awesome :D

  • @KarlofNile Personally, i think Sacrifice Unto Sebek is Nile`s best song, the intro is the most(i will now use an overused tiresome word) brutal thing i`ve heard, the sheer heaviness of it just cannot be measured.

I`m primarily an Heavy Metal guitar player, and i like to improvise, would you happen to have any tips as to how i could make songs as incredible as yours?

I would like brutality to be a part of my music, and kind of a tribute to one of my favorite players, which is you.

    Cheers.

  • @donSparda My answer would be = Play what you love . If you appreciate it , chances are SOMEONE else will too. :-)

  • @KarlofNile None of it, its perfect the way it is man, keep it metal \m/

  • Hey Karl! I just wanted to stop by and say that I think it's awesome that you're putting these videos up and actually reaching out to communicate with your fans. There aren't any bands out there that even come close to sounding like Nile, and in my humble opinion, nobody does death metal better! Thank you so much for doing what you do every day and making music the way you want to make it. I can tell that you love doing it, and you serve as an inspiration to me every day. Don't ever stop!

  • @distortion4ever Thank you my friend. Your words are the kind of inspiration that keeps me going though Dark Times .

  • @KarlofNile I'm just being honest with you, man. Also, I thought you might like to know that your Saurian Exorcisms album has become a favorite of a few of the professors at the conservatory I attend, especially my ethnomusicology professor. Maybe I should show them 'Masturbating the War God' next!

  • @distortion4ever In My experience With Ethnomusiclogists, Its also good to know when to quit while you're ahead..... They prefer to be right 101 % of the time . :-) Thanks for the kind words Compadre !

  • which string gauge do u use karl? is it a wounded G-string to?

  • @TheChrispablo Yes , it is Wounded . I hurt it pretty bad. :-) Perhaps if it had had a protective outer Winding , it might have survived , but it was a mere unprotected bare wire .

  • Hello Karl!!! Love all your Stuff! I have a question. I have some EMG pickups in my guitar and i play thorugh an ENGL screamer, it doesn´t give me that fat strong low-end that i´m looking for. It could be the EQ or just the amp? I´m playing thorugh an Ibanez TS9 and a MXR EQ

Good luck and continue playing like that!

  • Slow Sebek heavy as fuck! For example, 3:10

  • Hi Karl, I'd like to know what guitar is the cream strat.

    Many thanks for your videos.

  • @apinodimacerie The Cream Strat is my 73 Fender Strat . I wore out the Neck from all the constant Touring in the Early years of Nile, so I later replaced it with a Warmoth Scalloped Maple Neck . The Headstock says "Jackson" but thats just a carefully apllied stcker .

  • @KarlofNile Many thanks Karl. When I saw you in Milan in 2005 i forgot to ask you about it. I love that guitar!

  • Though I personally don't like Nile much (not too hot on the extremely heavy metal)... I find your videos extremely interesting to watch. In a sense it has given me a very interesting perspective on how to write some really brutal riffs of my own. Keep on rocking! I hope you and your band continue on doing what you guys love doing!

PS Scalloped frets are the best! Your V is also one of the coolest ones I've seen.

  • It sounds awesome even at half the speed.. nile owns

  • @hammerphilosopher Thats seems to be a common sentiment - this riff at half speed DOES sound heavy as fuck.

I have heard the voice of the People , and the "Half Speed Sebek" riff shall rise .

  • @KarlofNile haha, anyway, your video did it's purpose AGAIN, and made me go and pick up my guitar :D

  • Hey Karl , what kind of pick do you use is it Big stubby 3.00 mm ?

  • @Cna1st No Longer. I now use the Dunlop Tortex Sharp 1.35mm in Nile Black .

  • @KarlofNile Have you ever tried out David Reasoner's metal guitar picks? The guy has been making them since 1968. Definitely worth trying out.

  • what whats the tuning

  • Hey,it's really YOU!I didn't know you had a YT channel.I am not into death metal, but I just have to say that you're one hell of a guitarist and that your playing is really outstanding (what else?)!!!You rock,Karl!

  • Very cool Karl. Thanks for the lesson. I already had the Guitar Pro tab but it wasn't totally accurate. Sacrifice is by far my favorite song! Thanks for all the awesome metal dude, keep it coming.

  • i did terrorise my neigbours... at least i thought i did but my neighbours asked me to turn that thing up, [i guess they love your music XD

  • Awesome video. You should do Cast Down the Heretic or something off In Their Darkened Shrines like Execration Text or Wind of Horus. Also, here's a question for you i've always been curious about. If you listen to Masturbating the War God, the part that starts around 3:30ish was that inspired by Led Zeppelins Kashmir? Because everytime I hear it I think of Kashmir lol. Hope to hear back.

  • @Ithyphallics Yep Kashmir. Absolutely. What a great and Timeless Led Zep Song .From the Stone-Age era when Musicicans didnt have Pro Tools, auto-tune , the internet, etc etc etc , and actually had to write songs AND be able to play them WITH THEIR OWN HANDS. :-)

  • @KarlofNile I knew it. lol. Yea, Music has evolved so much which is why I think older albums are called classics for a reason. lol. Hard to believe albums like Pink Floyd The Wall etc were made so long ago. I love the Internet though, if it wasn't for that we wouldn't be able to watch awesome videos like this unless we bought them on VHS tapes like some old Paul GIlbert/Jason Becker/Vinnie Moore videos lol. Thanks for the Feedback! Long live Nile.

  • @KarlofNile HAIL TO YOU KARL!

  • This is great Karl, not many artists make videos like these! Now all I have to do is learn this in none-dropped tuning and upload another Nile song! Can't wait to hear some new material!

  • but Karl... my amp can go to 13 ;(

  • where can i find a fretless 11 string like the one you have? that thing is fuckin sick

  • Wow. I should just put down my bass and play guitar.

  • karl i fkn love your Dean!

    Are last frets scalloped? =)

  • @DatevNoName They're ALL scalloped .

  • @KarlofNile

Like Malmesteen's stratocaster, but more brutal lol

  • I don't know why, but on the official video for Sacrifice Unto Sebek, your face is kinda blurred out. Was that intentional?

  • @TheRikcarter I had been developing a new type of synthetic skin to aid burn victims. but there was a flaw that causes the skin to rapidly disintegrate after being exposed to light for 99 minutes. An Explosion in my lab left me hideously burned and scarred , requiring that I use the synthetic Skin to cover my face . These youtube videos are short; but On longer Pro- video shoots , the shoot can last alll day , leaving my face visible .So the director used digittal blurrring to compensate.

  • @KarlofNile You mean, you're Darkman.

  • @KarlofNile :P Dark man is like my favourite movie Karl you are like my hero hahahaha :P I love that

  • How do you incorporate those scales into your solos dude? Whenever I try to follow the patterns and make it my own it just turns out like shit,

  • @Nightmare5496 Which Patterns ?

  • @KarlofNile Like the first skank riff. I cant ever seem to incorporate those in my songs effectively.

  • Tua Ashemu, lol'd hard

Karl also has a great sense of humour. Just my kind of humour, too.

  • @paddymoep Yes, my friend , dead right ; there is quite a bit of Tongue-in-Cheek humour and references

within Nile's music/lyrics if one takes the time to notice . As much as I love Brutality ,

taking it all TOO seriously would be even sillier . I would rather be dead serious about nailing the riffs . :-)

  • @KarlofNile I think i trust you on that, nailing the riffs, i mean.

I just recently started to " get into " Nile. Even though i knew you existed for as long as i listen to Bolt Thrower now. But i just didn't get past Sebek and Papyrus. It takes time to consume the lyrics and learn all the riffs of a band, but i think with your help it will at least be easier than it was with Bolt Thrower. (Even though your music is way harder to play.)

Gonna kick some music store ass now, want to buy a Nile CD.

  • Funny how i don't hear the riffs clearly when you play so fast. Listening to this just proves the complexity.

  • Awesome post, great lesson, thanks Karl! :D

  • wottaloadashit
