I admit I still struggle with the approach of people like Brian Blade and Elvin Jones . These are drummers who play and react in the moment and it can get pretty out there sometimes . But do not confuse the advanced and very deep art of people like Brian Blade with the obnoxious and juvenile drumming displayed in this video .

i'll start by saying: he blows me out of the water. ok. but seriously, this is so random. and if it's improv, i get that. but it's so random that it gets in the way of his skill. he needs to record his improv jams, then watch them himself, to get the spectator's perspective. i think, a lot of times fast/skilled drummers would do better to settle down into groves more often. sure, make it a complex grove with some sweet fills, but like i said, this is too much random-ness to win anything.

analyze before you talk. you could feel the beat, but when he can feel the Solo he's going 'out' which is harder and then would go back 'in' again. i could say that he's a Percussion Major in a Music school (based on the background and stick technique). so if you think that he isnt good at the drumset, well he knows everything about percussion. peace :) (from a Music Major also)
