This isn't rambling. This is a young man showing his enthusiasm and awe that he is participating in something he feels to be extraordinary. He is overcome with emotion and happiness. Cut the young guy a break and stop seeing him as a freakin awesome character who fails to live up to your expectations but as a uniquely talented but still fallible human being trying to make his way in the world.
