I favor capital punishment, but this case does not justify using the death penalty because the guy she killed was in self-defense. If Lena Baker didn'tt kill the guy that got her put in the Georgia electric chair, then he woulda killed her. I think she shoulda been acquitted. Period, case closed.
Well I was'nt there, so I dont know . But I can imagine a black woman in the south back then was little more than property. Thats why I cant understand why they accept the same abuse now. I'm sure she was just tired of being a thrid class citizen and being used for a toilet stoll to dump sperm in everynight. Thats why its so sad black women put up with the same thing today. They call their abusers, lover, boyfriend, pastor, and baby daddy instead of white man.
Lena Baker was guilty of murder according to the laws of the state of Georgia as they existed then in 1945. Also under the laws of that time, there was little room for leniency or mitigation -- her punishment was pretty much guaranteed to be death. She admitted killing her employer and that was that.
Under today's legal system, her crime would be considered manslaughter and would be punished with a few years in jail. But we cannot go back and label her as factually innocent, she was not.
@nicspic the laws in 1945 were not designed to protect Black people. She was actually sentenced to death for killing a white man. The laws back then were ridiculous! If the laws in Georgia in 1945 were intended for everyone then Lena's RAPIST WOULD'VE BEEN ARRESTED BACK THEN. THE "LAWS" JUST OVERLOOKED THE REASON SHE KILLED HER RAPIST!! LENA BAKER WAS INNOCENT AFTER 60 YRS THEY REALIZED IT WAS SELF DEFENSE. A LITTLE TOO LATE THOUGH TO BE EXONERATED AFTER HER DEATH. RIP LENA BAKER.
@nicspic.. as a few have already stated, no one really knows what transpired, no one but the 2 involved. but according to the movie, Lena WAS innocent. she was trying to leave this man's residence & he threatened to shoot her. she & mr. ernest knight wrestled with the gun & it went off.
@nicspic wow!..you speak as if you were there...like you were in her shoes...wow you may be gearing to a point but you really sound cold and heartless...
Don't fret hon. That whole family Fell "sick" and died or got put into a mental institution. They all got "prayed" on. There's more than one way to skin a cat.
such ashame, Sorry to ask but i may not know much about this. Why was she put to death all because she was black and was just Framed for a murder? or did she actually commit a murder.

She was a maid who being sexually harrassed (raped daily ) by her employer, she killed him in self defense, after years of abuse.
