@patrickJMT sadly, many math teachers tend to dislike students who don't grasp it easily. I know. I am 51, back to school again. I have been intimidated for years by simple algebra. My high school teachers pronounced me dumb, but actually, i'm fairly smart, I passed English with A's. I just don't grasp these concepts easily. There are a lot of steps, which I don't care for.

just use the cover-up method. x & y= 0. if you have 2x+4y=12, cover 2x, and solve for y. divide 4 to each side. do the same for x. i love my algebra teacher :D

@Glowbify well, you can add or subtract things to put it in the same form, but that is not needed. just plug in x = 0 and solve for y. plug in y=0 and then solve for x.

@JosieDevida 3/3= 1 if you have two halfs of one it is equal to one. One half is 1/2 so two halfs is equal to 2/2, if you have two halfs that is one whole. So if you have 8/3 it means you have two wholes and two quarters out of three quarters.2 2/3
