@spuffchops70 I agree with your point about the different avenues he explored on the album. Can I ask, which is your favorite track on the "Ghosts" album?
@dieselrepublic 'Duk Koo Kim', without a doubt. To me tune's a distillation of everything that is wonderful about The Koz.. You're right, 'Songs for a Blue Guitar' is another great album. Although 'Brockwell Park' from 'Ocean Beach' is my favourite RHP tune. Have you viewed Cyber Ruby's posting on this site of her dad playing that song at a wedding.? It's really excellent.
People seem to compare Kozelek to Neil Young and I think they have a good point. Very similar in music style and voice. And saying that is not an insult by any means. So, I say check out RHP and Sun Kil Moon as much as possible. Never gets old.
@starmandx1 Well, in my opinion, they're virtually the same band with a different name. Check out RHP album, "Songs for a Blue Guitar". Another classic. His voice, style and gloominess is what makes Kozelek's bands so interesting. There's really no weak track on "Ghosts". I've been listening to this cd since it first came out years ago and I still don't get tired of it.
@mpa324 I didn't realise it was about another boxer nicknamed Pancho Villa. I sorta thought maybe he was comparing some Filipino boxer to Pancho Villa, the Mexican folk hero & revolutionary. What's with his thing about boxers anyway? Has he ever talked about this in interviews? Is Mark Kozelek a secret pugilist? I feel we must be informed.
@spuffchops70 Yeah,he must be a boxing fan,or he was a boxer himself.I mean he must have done research on these past boxers,Pancho Villa was from 1920s
@mpa324 Somehow I just can't get my head round the idea that he was once a boxer. Glass jaw? He's probably more of a paper jaw..."Make like paper sound"...whatever, there were certainly interesting songwriting avenues he was exploring on that album.
@spuffchops70 you are right this song is all about pancho villa filipino boxer ..memory, past ghosts and those who died before their natural time. ... pancho villa was commemorated 2 times in this album im not really familiar with the other track , only this track......
@TheRapinoy Jimmy Wilde voted Britians greatest fighter with 100 knockouts was a flyweight, & voted 3rd hardest puncher of all time, lost to Pancho Villa in his last fight. Jimmy was just over 100lbs with freakish power, they called him the mighty atom, & the ghost with a hammer in his hand. Pancho was only 1 of 4 men to beat him, Wilde won 134 fights! & lost just 4 times.
@dan32113 i know the story of old skool boxing and you can find PANCHO VILLA AGAINST... jimmy wilde here on youtube just search pancho villa........ on THOSE TIME boxers fights 5 times a week lol and during those time i think the original weight class / division is only eight unlike now they have this super sub classess... lol like manny pacquiao's 7th WD WC suppose to be thats only 4 titles lol not 7 same welter weight or flyweight with sub super blah blah
@TheRapinoy I assumed Pancho was a Mexican boxer, not filipino...I know nothing about boxing. I've been reading up on the original Pancho Villa & Emiliano Zapata. Mark's done a bit of travelling around Mexico in his time. I wish he wrote more songs about the tragedy of young boxers departing before their time, this stuff's classic!
Probably the greatest band of all time. Well, in my opinion anyway. The whole album is so classic and there's no other band out there that really has a sound like theirs'. Truly one of my favorite cds to listen to.
@dieselrepublic Did you ever listen to Kozeleks earlier bad 'The Red House Painters'? Try Katy Song or Grace Cathedral Park, I personally think his earlier stuff has more substance and a better feel to them.
It's so funny, because for some reason I hadn't listened to this song on the end of the album before, and when I did I was like, "Wow, this is an acoustic version of Salvador Sanchez!" I felt kind of silly, but they are both such fantastic songs!
i listened to this on a quiet sunny day in my home. it brings back so many memories.
