What's the thickest wire you could do this technique at? I tried this on a 10mm plate as a fillet with 1.2mm solid wire the other day and it's like you're trying to cram to much metal in. Easier with .9mm wire??
I have been welding exhaust systems for 12 years mostly over head and down hill and done odd projects now and then that are heavier gauge and never been told adout these tips. Very good info thanks a lot for your videos!
too much metal across weld, wagon tracks on either side. u run up hill mig like stick or flux core almost straight across stay in corners longer and go quick across middle if u have machine set right it will weld itself sound is all u need !!!
I HAVE A ISSUE OF NOT SEEING MY PUDDLE WITH WIRE FEED AND NOT BEING ABLE TO MAKE THE PROPER DISTANCES OF PASSES, SO HOW DO I SEE BEYOND THE CONE TO MAKE THEM TIGHT
Btw im not trying to be cocky.. but i just got my WABO cert. on 1 inch with dual shield and i thought i would give my opinion cuz passed and the CWI offered me a job!
Welding up hill is structurally sound when down hill isnt! its all about preheating whats in front of ur puddle and obviously heat rises so ur not gonna preheat going down hill... its just like building a house! do u build a house from top to bottom? no, u build it from the ground up! same thing with welding. by the way u might try a Z type oscillation while holding ur edges.. if ur using dual sheild with stargon 9 if understood u rite! its might give u a lil smoother edges.
@ZS6JMP Yes it can. I've tried it before. The ripple pattern will just be straight horizontal lines unlike the usual slight "U" curve when you weave it like a straight zigzag.
@vessbo1234567 I just completed a welding course in all aspects of welding and we had to use a root run and two caps on 10mm plate. The v method is far too hard for beginners especially if the weld is going to be x-ray tested. It's far too easy to get pinholes right in the corner of the piece with v method. Our instructer welded all over the world doing all sorts of structural steel that were all x-ray tested on for 18 years and found out that was the easiest way to eliminate pinhloes.
yer not bad this is called the christmas tree technique, im no expert but if i did this at my work i would get bollocked. when you get coded you cant do this it has to be a root pass first, then your capping run either 1 or 2 runs depending on the thickness. your root is just a U shape but really fast going up, i recommend this because you go fast across the middle and pause on the side, because the root run is concaved the toes of the weld make a divit for the weld to sit in this makes it flat.
Im not an everyday welder but do have to dig out the mig once in a while. This video helped alot. If my weld turned out that good....Ya. this helped! Thanks alot! Thumbs up!
vertical downs are not structural vertical ups are. I prefer the christmas tree weave get a nicer bead also do the same with stick using 16tc low hydrogen rods they don't drip the way gp rods do and the slag doesn't get into the weld pool it floats on top as the arc never leaves the pool. steady hands practice and play with your settings to get it to work for your style speed and machine
I prefer the Christmas tree technique, I suppose it is closest to the triangle but pauses slightly at the root then tilts slightly to the side wall while moving back then pausing at the toe then fluid motion across the edge as slightly tilting toward opposite side then pause at toe, fluid to the root. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is and it makes for very good penetration and when timing and placement is right the beads are very close and even.
to D675, I hope you arent paying that school to teach you to weld, the instructor obviously knows nothing of welding, uphill is not only a technique, it is a necessity for any verticle joint that needs to be welded over 3/16-1/4" thickness. Any joint thicker and it has no strength without uphilling period.
As for mig blowing? tig is nice, but it also takes a lot longer thus mig has its place firmly planted in the high production industries. Mig functions and looks fine when done correctly.
@lostbuffalo I dont think the computer screen can get bright enough to hurt your eyes like that. Plus it looks like the camera dimmed way down when he pulled the trigger anyways.
@lostbuffalo cameras will filter out the UV rays and it won't damage your eyes on the computer screen. You can look at the sun on a computer screen and it won't hurt, but actually doing it outside is very bad.
@Juiceboxx03 ok...so i can watch the welding video on the computer inside but not if I take my computer outside? does the sunlight recharge the uv coming out of the tv screen and make it harmful again?

@Juiceboxx03 I tried it...I cant tell the difference. I thought maybe a first there was a difference but now I'm pretty sure the sun on google looks just like the real one, all foggy and such

For Roman67 who says the triangle motion works superb on SMAW uphill welding obviously doesnt weld. You never come back towards the puddle with a process that produces slag. Thats a failed weld because of slag inclusion. Mig has no slag. And to TheD675, I to was told not to weld uphill with mig in school, that is just because they are giving you the basics and because of bead appearance. Field work is a different story. You do it how the boss tells you. Flux Cored would be more appropriate.
i was taught to never mig uphill!(maybe my school told me wrong? always down hill drag with a weave motion dont gotta worry bout slag possibly silicon that lays on the bead. besides mig blows its like gluin steel together imo.;) id pick smaw anyday
@TheD675 From what ive seen the molten metal seems to fall out of the weld when trying to go down hill. Im sure there is probably a procedure to eliminate that but uphill works better...
I am not software engg with advance degree but I remember when I was studying my bachelors in engg it was mandetory to take a course in workshop techniques. @virgoptrex You also might have gotten a flash, it happens when the uv light reflects off of your clothes and come under the wleding helmet, it has happen to me many times.
@virgoptrex surely its from the arc light . Most people with light colored eyes have that issue. Rookie welders try to see the weld pool ,so they get close and turn down the tint setting on the visor . Its funny to see rookies faces only inches away from the weldments . Eyes all red after words.
Its also good to know that even when you can't see the flash, it can do damage to the eye peripherally . Usually temporary .
I like whatching your videos! When I go to school the next day i use the tips to weld and most of the time I end up with some pretty nice welds, thanks!
i went to lincoln welding school. during the MIG week for vertical up I used the pulse setting. I tweaked the settings a little for my speed and comfort running about 285-300 WFS at about 27 volts. I was laying welds that were nearly perfectly smooth and not as bumpy as this one in the vid. however i was not useing the triangle weave i was doing a straight weave
the weld we learned today in school is a 3f lap weld on 3/8" plate. the instructors have us doing the root pass as a stringer downhill then 2 passes uphill doing herringbone weave. just wondering, when you do weaves like that do you normally use a twisting action of your wrist or move the whole gun side to side? @weldboss1 at my work we run .52 wire which is not flux core its called hard wire we spot it on t4 pipe....we also run a flux core which can be run up hill non stop...ones inner core the others outter core flux

nice weld even tho i do a different technique this works good, try doin a weaving motion and stop at the ends just a lil to prevent undercut and go up about an 1/8 in everytime
I have been welding for 20 years and have NEVER seen or heard of pulling the puddle down hill while welding uphill. Ever heard of gravity? By the way by pulling the puddle down your trapping slag in the weld. If your gonna weld uphill always move up!!!!!
@romans67bird really? 20 years and you think theres slag in mig welding? bravo my friend bravo. Oh and the triangle technique is superb for welding uphill with stick welding, and as we all know I'm sure you have to pull down on one leg of that triangle to do it right, sooooooooooooooooo fail
I have been welding for 20 years. Almost all of it vertical and have NEVER seen or heard of anyone ever pulling the puddle downhill while going uphill. WTF . Ever heard of gravity and you are also trapping slag in the weld by weaving down back over the weld. Gonna weld uphill always keep moving up. DUHHH
ok jonnyweld 1 fo all i am onely to 16 and i bet my life i can put down a better bead than you ever could my dad works off shore and i learned every thing i knbow form him so go fuck off you pussy ass little bitch you know why i say that bec you are of a teen bein better at something you you turely are so onec agin go fuck your self
@fordmanfergie123 You need to learn how to spell and probably better yet, speak, before you start mouthing off about someone elses work. You sound like an idiot just from your comment which makes all your ranting not sound credible at all.
@fordmanfergie123 ok kid. Theres plenty of ppl who can run beads better than your dad. Get the fuck over yourself. Also it takes no skill to run mig. Thats why is the easiest and lowest paying type of welding.
yeah i dont see anything wrong wtih it doesnt have to be perfect just cant have any undercut, porostiy, or cold lap or any other weakening defects someday these kids will learn that
@chizzy555 . i think they mean when you have the machine set up so that the wire is fed with a positive current , your work is the ground/grounded side.
@electpoet69 Argon/oxygen mix? I didn't think welding was done with any kind of oxygen mix.. you learn something every day I guess but isn't the point of the argon to remove the oxygen from the welding zone? or is it just removing the air contamination?
ive been a welder for only a year and ive learnt from the best my whole family does it and the tech> he does is the same i was tought and btw ill be out of school in two years and always lookin for work so email me if you have any apprenticeships open
very interesting,i did an arc welding course and i found vertical welding was a nightmare to get right, all i got was aload of bubble snot.nothing like this weld you got here.but would you do the same V motion as you explained there with arc welding?or is it just horizontal side to side as your going up with the rod?

this tech is okay but what iv been told is two go like a christmass tree effect allmost the same as he but you start off by going from left two right or right two left i like left two right then as you stop small on the right make a tringle and cut it in half by going down left and repeat again thats how the uk does it as you get more penertraion ill post a vid one of the days when ill cut up more metal

@90mustangkid what do you mean 100co2 runs smoother!?!?! co2 runs like complete shit. Sure you get good penetration but you also get a shitload of spatter, not too mention undercut and extremely convex weld profiles. 85-90% argon with 5% oxygen runs the best for hardwire, especially if you're trying to achieve spray transfer...but of course vertical spray wouldnt be good haha
@redsamuraidragon it is but when you are doing struture you need deep penertration aka like the christmass tree way and you will now that it will penertrate without use of xray.
i would only use this if it was on struture steel or any loadbearing weight nice beed tho
@angodeath i can do better the only problem is that one i dont have the tools at home two if i was two do this kind of weld i would need pratice second i would show anouther way
@JohnnyWeld little kids shouldn't be welding, though i don't agree with you that it looks good... could use practice, maybe it's the 75/25 mixture? i've always ran higher argon content of 80/20; glad to see he is going back into the root of the weld, i've seen some people try going from side to side and that won't cut it...
I would like to see that weld cut open and sent to a lab for testing. HE DID NOT EVEN CLEAN THE METAL. Dirty welds have poor penetrations and are set up to fail. People, if you are too lazy to clean the metal, don't weld.
Hahaha I work at a Sawmill If the welders where I work cleaned all the metal before they welded they wouldnt be welding very much! I see them blast the metal quikly with a torch and then weld away!
What's the thickest wire you could do this technique at? I tried this on a 10mm plate as a fillet with 1.2mm solid wire the other day and it's like you're trying to cram to much metal in. Easier with .9mm wire??

how i wish i could weld like that...

nice weld even tho i do a different technique this works good, try doin a weaving motion and stop at the ends just a lil to prevent undercut and go up about an 1/8 in everytime

@jesustafoya01 ah yes, another person trying to give tips to a proffesional....never gets old...

There's not many situations where you go uphill or vertical as it's known in Blighty. Downhill or downhand is definately the best for MIG.
wesjoe90 1 year ago
@wesjoe90 if you want superb penetration you always go uphill. Downhill for thinner or non critical welds.

Ever heard of stacking dimes? Now that's what you call pretty. Learn it before you try to preach it numbnuts...

I have been welding for 20 years and have NEVER seen or heard of pulling the puddle down hill while welding uphill. Ever heard of gravity? By the way by pulling the puddle down your trapping slag in the weld. If your gonna weld uphill always move up!!!!!
romans67bird 1 year ago

DUHHH
zacharybenoit24 1 year ago
That was pretty.

fordmanfergie123 1 year ago
@fordmanfergie123 You need to learn how to spell and probably better yet, speak, before you start mouthing off about someone elses work. You sound like an idiot just from your comment which makes all your ranting not sound credible at all.
DThompson1985 1 year ago
@fordmanfergie123 ok kid. Theres plenty of ppl who can run beads better than your dad. Get the fuck over yourself. Also it takes no skill to run mig. Thats why is the easiest and lowest paying type of welding.

go back to welding then u faggot
TheEgoShredder 1 year ago
yeah i dont see anything wrong wtih it doesnt have to be perfect just cant have any undercut, porostiy, or cold lap or any other weakening defects someday these kids will learn that
budgaugh66 1 year ago
I'd like to see an uphill on a flat surface technique rather than in a corner. By the way thanks for the tips. Nice weld.

what does short circuit mig mean?
chizzy555 1 year ago
@chizzy555 . i think they mean when you have the machine set up so that the wire is fed with a positive current , your work is the ground/grounded side.
twistymcslide 1 year ago
@twistymcslide hmm that doesnt sound right......

@chizzy555 ok , then do your own research . .

I've been trying this with a "V" groove & have used the unside down "U" motion, i'll have to try the upside down "V." The up hill is so much harder!

Would this teqnique be good for a 7018 or 6130 electrode, used in stick welding?
TheHossHobart 1 year ago
lets see that done with .045 wire, 400 amp miller, argon/oxygen mix, then id be impressed.
electpoet69 1 year ago
@electpoet69 Argon/oxygen mix? I didn't think welding was done with any kind of oxygen mix.. you learn something every day I guess but isn't the point of the argon to remove the oxygen from the welding zone? or is it just removing the air contamination?
0newaysound 1 year ago
@0newaysound there is no welding that uses oxygen accept for brazing, period.
DLEWIS488 1 year ago

very interesting,i did an arc welding course and i found vertical welding was a nightmare to get right, all i got was aload of bubble snot.nothing like this weld you got here.but would you do the same V motion as you explained there with arc welding?or is it just horizontal side to side as your going up with the rod?

this tech is okay but what iv been told is two go like a christmass tree effect allmost the same as he but you start off by going from left two right or right two left i like left two right then as you stop small on the right make a tringle and cut it in half by going down left and repeat again thats how the uk does it as you get more penertraion ill post a vid one of the days when ill cut up more metal

if you use the Z motion the bead looks alot better..
gagehump 1 year ago
Yep.... good weld.
P.S I thought you would spend a little more time on the thicker part of the metal to get that penetration thats all.
swordfish19792002 1 year ago
try some L-56 superarc best wire hands down get back to me
90mustangkid 1 year ago
looks good y 75/25 100co2 runs smoother all so less$
90mustangkid 1 year ago
@90mustangkid what do you mean 100co2 runs smoother!?!?! co2 runs like complete shit. Sure you get good penetration but you also get a shitload of spatter, not too mention undercut and extremely convex weld profiles. 85-90% argon with 5% oxygen runs the best for hardwire, especially if you're trying to achieve spray transfer...but of course vertical spray wouldnt be good haha
swasnation 1 year ago
whoa haha, co2 gets the best penetration but its not smooth by any means haha
MJOLNIRSxWRATH 1 year ago
I thought this was good especially for a beginner like myself. Im able to actually get nice welds now but I dont know any good tricks.

i dont see why he gets such a hard time that weld was good
DougBDIT 1 year ago
only 75/25 argon? Try using 90/10, and you'll get less fireworks off the sides.
IncredibleHamez 2 years ago
this is good technique.. i dunno why people are bashing this guy. Props. Its harder for many people to grasp welding up with a mig.
redsamuraidragon 2 years ago 2
@redsamuraidragon it is but when you are doing struture you need deep penertration aka like the christmass tree way and you will now that it will penertrate without use of xray.
i would only use this if it was on struture steel or any loadbearing weight nice beed tho

DRUNKPANDA48 1 year ago
