I am a proudly gay Polish-American in California. One of these days I will be proudly marching with my fellow LGBT Poles and leading the way for a new day in Poland.

But leadership is not a piece of cake - do you think you have the qualities of leadership, if so why, and if not, is it that you just assume that because you'll come from America, Poles will listen?

@usenetposts I know how to win friends and influence people, I'm actually quite popular at my school. I'm not one of those Americans who thinks they can easily save the world, I'm learning about the culture and the language. And if I don't have the option to lead, I can just protest in a group like these people seen here.

The gay rights marches in San Francisco were really scary to kids. Enough to make an entire generation of children into homophobic adults.

This march would have been like those of Martin Luther King Jr., or Susan B. Anthony, or Nelson Mandella or Mahatma Ghandi except you're really shouting. I hate yelling.

@maths82 Nobody's saying they can't do as they please. They have the right to do everything a married couple can do, the only thing is that they have to call it differently because in fact marriage is a religious term. In Catholicism it is one of the sacraments. If they wanted to call it a civil partnership, then they are absolutely free to have it. All they need to do is go to the UK and do it there. Poland is obliged to recognise such unions contracted in another EU State,

Okay, I can understand that you wish the term "marriage" to refer only to heterosexual religious partnerships. I don't have a big problem with that at all. Does this mean secular heterosexual couples are also obliged to use the term "civil partnership" or something similar? Since for them it would not be a sacrament. Again, I wouldn't really have a problem with that, differentiating a legal/state recognised union from a church recognised union.

@maths82 If they are secular, as in atheists, I don't understand why they want to get married. I think for example that Richard Dawkins is a hypocrite because he talks about there being no God and yet he got married. If we are just animals, why get married? Animals don't get married. Some animals have monogamous relations, but they still don't need no ceremony or dumbass piece of paper.

Why shouldn't secular people marry? (Of course not in a church ;-) ) There are other reasons than religious for it. Different kinds of marriage ceremonies have already existed (not just in Europe) before the catholic church was founded.

I didn't want to take up the cudgels for gay marriages. I just disagree with you, that there is no reason for secular people to marry. As for the history of gay marriages: Wikipedia for example contains articles about "Same-sex marriage" and the "History of same-sex unions", which show, that something like same-sex marriage already existed in ancient times.

@shikei86 OK, so getting back to what I think you wanted to talk about, the reason why secular society should have some form of marriage is really for the security of children. But gay couples can't have children except by adoption or by gay/lesbian co-operation and the adoption process is such that in fact official marriage is neither here nor there, but stability is the issue. I'm not sure that that "something like same sex marriage" wasn't just same sex relationships that had lasted a while.

@usenetposts What if a specific church decides that gay marriage is totally okay? Members of that church could then get married and be able to call it marriage.

Also, going all the way to the UK is a bit of a hassle, especially if you want to bring your family along..

@DeoMachina People can make whatever religion they like, but still the fact remains that the texts of the main established religions don't allow this, such was the wisdom of ages or the revelation of God, one or the other or both, and so now in order for such a "Church" to have legitimacy they would have to write their own revelation.

@usenetposts I meant that an already established church may one day change their interpretation of their texts to allow for gay marriage. Changes in doctrine have happened before, and there are already priests who believe that it's okay with God. What would happen if the vast majority of the priests and churchgoers changed their minds years from now? If that ever happened, I can see the offical church policy changing which could cause some to leave but many more to join.

@DeoMachina It's an interesting idea, but look what is happening now that Ratzinger is liberating people to use condoms. The people who obediently didn't wear them and now have AIDs, or children they didn't want, what are they to think? I wouldn't be surprised if someone sues the Vatican for not allowing condom use before if it now turns out that God never minded in the first place. So you see it's not so easy for established churches to change their ideas.

Poland is changing and growing economically, but its still way too backwards to have social liberties like gay marriage.

@blahk04 Not quite sure why that's backwards and not just sideways. For all we know in the west in the future homosexual partnerships might be scrapped again, you can't just take it for granted. Some States in the US were talking about it. Nobody knows what will happen in the future, and the future might think that the Poles were the enlightened ones.

@usenetposts Yes, but I suppose you could also say that it's possible the Nazis may rise again, if we're going to talk remote possibilities. I guess the importance is in the principle. The normalization of homosexuality is following a similar path that the development of other civil liberties had, so it can be predicted that homophobia won't be considered enlightened in the future.

Homosexuality was considered enlightened a thousand years prior to a time when burning homosexuals was enlightened. One simply does not know what will be considered correct in the future.
