Isle Royale is a spectacular place. As the most isolated and sole island National Park in the system, Isle Royale is a place filled with wilderness and seclusion from the stresses of the world. I went there last summer and will be back soon. I urge everyone to check out Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. God Bless all these parks and wild places.
The documentary is 12 hours long in total. well just about. I have seen all 12 hours about 3 or 4 times. And im 19, im not a middle aged man who has some sort of hobby regarding the parks, im just mesmerized by these places or beauty. Multiple times I found myself with chills going down my spine, tears a few of those times too. If you have been to any of the parks you will be hit by this film. AND THE SOUNDTRACK! Partially because of this movie the parks will be a part of my life. Watch it.
What a Great Place to Vacation! I meet my wife at Yellowstone! Her and I were there for the summer taking time from college, it is truly a love story come true. She worked in one department and I worked in another, I could still see her all day working on the other side of that Grand Old Log Cabin Store, oh my! well as time would have its way we became friends, then lovers giving birth to twins (Boy & Girl) she now is a Nurse, I'm a Travel Consultant. Dreams due come true! Wishing U Happiness!
People Do Have A NEED 2 KNOW-- that before Bush left office he signed something into law that will allow the drilling 4 oil in our National Parks !!!!! It was in the news 4 only a min. like anything really important 2 we the people : (
Where are the North Americans Indians? The true owners of all these lands? I watched several episodes and couldn´t find reference to them. The music used is made with their flutes... At least, John Muir's references are present in some videos. A white man with a soul of a native indian.

@Saphiresp They are called Native Americans. This show is not about Native Americans. Ken Burns has made wonderful documentaries about Native Americans. This is about the National Parks. Where are they?
Everywhere. Infact, we have Pauite tribe members in our neighborhood. Still practicing their spiritual and
Native American beliefs and customs. Cherokee have their own nation. They are very much alive and well.
i bought this documentary for this project I had to do for school (ughhh high school). parts of it were really interesting, but other parts were extremely boring.... i have to admit that i could only watch the videos for about thirty minutes at a time!! lol but my dad loved it so... id give it a about a 5/10 rating ;)
The feeling of "connection" the Ranger talks about is exactly what the Lakota and others lived! Imagine living in this paradise for hundreds of years only to be forced to move to God foresaken desolation. This was what the white man did to us when we tried to share. Enjoy your parks.
Sometimes I get so discouraged with my country, the political poison that divides us. Then I see this and it reminds me that places like our National Parks represent the best of who we are as a people and a nation. Then I fall in love with my country all over again.
I can't believe California's state parks are being closed. If they try that in my towns state park, I'll fight to my death. I've been out in my state parks and I've seen how it is beautiful and can tell a great history of people, and the majesty of the laws of nature.
How many national parks were covered in this documentary there are so many including tropical forests one of them being the second oldest natural reseve in the Hemisphere right after Yellowstone.
Sorry, folks -- this series looks like catnip for the NPR crowd: high-minded, preachy, and oh so politically correct. Ken Burns has made one, and only one, truly great series, The Civil War, and for that he deserves our gratitude. Here, however, he's turned the National Parks into something they decidedly are not, monuments to ethnic diversity (his favorite theme, and a pretty tiresome one).
I just returned from Yosemite Valley. They were playing the episodes in the outdoor amphitheater and it was the coolest thing ever to be able to experience such a great piece of art in the cocoon of possibly nature's greatest gift! Having El Capitan et al silhouetted against the starry sky while watching was indescribable!
A beautiful & informative documentary. I watched the first segment last night and it was breathtaking. I drove across the country last summer and visited many of these parks along the way. The imagery & history unfold to tell a great story. Thank you. I look forward to watching the next segments.
Just watched part of the first segment of this documentary, really beautiful & informative. It is a much needed document to re-ignite the love of nature for a new generation. Thank you for creating a beautiful film which touches our emotions and reminds us of the power of nature. Best regards.
This film was a major disappointment for I am a huge Ken Burns fan but this documentary was simplistic with little or no scientific value sure to set our progress back years. I honestly could not tell if this was made by an Evangelist or Ken Burns.
wow, an evangelist? Nature does draw many to spirituality or thoughts of something greater than ourselves, the native americans could not seperate spirituality from nature and the same is true for many people today...of all faiths. I respect your opinion but happily disagree. peace!
so far ive seen Rocky Mountain National Park and Grand Canyon National Park. Next I want to tour southern Utah and see the arches, monument valley, all that stuff.
PBS is airing this locally right now. It is seriously moving, and though I have only visited Glacier, Yosemite, and a small number of the smaller parks like Golden Gate... I feel very connected to everything this film is saying about all of the US national parks.
I just finished watching Dances with Wolves, a four hour reminder of the country we stole from its owners. Now I'm watching this twelve hour show bragging about the beautiful land we stole. I think I'll go get some serious antidepressants now . . .
your view on things seems quite tunneled...by your standards, if one should go visit new york, all we should remember is the attack of 9/11..or if we should travel to poland, all our thoughts should be about the holocaust....no doubt we cannot forget these things, but to close your eyes to all the greatness and wonder in this life that overwhelmingly triumphs those unfortunate footprints on our history, is in itself just as tragic.. and the beauty of life will surely end up passing you by...
interesting documentary...there is still so much for me to explore in this "amazingly beautiful country of ours"...truthfully mentioned in this video..
Grew up loving the parks with a family that camped in most all of them. My wish for the end of my life is to be able to visit them all again. Thanks for the lovely reminder of places that always took my breath away with their majesty.
I can't figure out why the republicans hate the National Parks. They love to call Ken Burns a socialist and rant about funding the arts, but who else is going to make quality documentaries like this? Have the republicans EVER done ANYTHING fo
I've always been a lover of the National Parks and this preview alone made me cry with its beauty, poignancy, and truth. I can't wait to watch it with my six year old son. Ken Burns deserves the Presidential Medal of Freedom for the job he's done helping Americans understand their past and themselves through his body of work.
@mibrop Agreed, and I sincerely hope folks support their PBS stations too, because there's no way you'd ever see something of this quality, with this attention detail on any cable channel. PBS really is the last bastion of quality documentaries on American TV.
Burns says "Nobody's told the story" !That's American arrogance for you.
This is an old story of how a few rich people control everything and set aside a little bit for the little people to add to their fame and their glory. This isn't like Baseball and it certianly isn't like Jazz.
When the Rockefellers decide to sell the Tetons to raise some capital they'll commision a documentary about how they needed to do it to save "democracy" and how we should be thankful to them.
True, but consider the fact that people like the Rockefellers could have made a great deal more money by selling it to private individuals than to the American government. The fact that they set the land aside for use as national parks is admirable.
In addition, if they had a large amount of money and wished to spend it on beautiful land, it was their right to do so.
Last, Ken Burns made this documentary on his own accord, and you have the right to refrain from watching it.
The film was scripted and produced by Dayton Duncan to promote NPS. Duncan started this campaign when he was appointed by Clinton to the board of directors of the National Park Foundation, a government-created organization promoting NPS. Duncan and Burns collaborated with the government and the National Parks Conservation Association, the private lobby arm of NPS. The film is coordinated with a big push in Washington to expand acquisition and the power of the National Park Service.

Republicans are having a right hissyfit because thars gold and silver and copper and diamonds and slaves still left in dem der mountians!! Ewv.....quit skewing you! LOL.
Those are spectacular scenes. And how jealous do I feel not to have been part of the crew! What a life-changing assignment, (drool) I bet the stuff on the cutting room floor was quite spectacular too. I'm really looking forward to the series.

I don't really agree with the subtitle, "America's Best Idea." I love the national parks. But I think America's best idea was the U.S. Constitution.
dovermail 8 months ago
@dovermail The problem with the Constitution is that it is so flawed, that any part of it can be ignored or dismissed on a judges whim.
