Is that really how you would touch yourself? Because I don't buy it. Don't get me wrong, you sang it beautifully...but this is not supposed to be about singing pretty. As the first number of the show, we immediately get a feel for who Wendla is and what the show is all about. Being afraid to be vulnerable, to feel, to touch. I felt some choices you made were a bit much. Think of it as if she's looking in a mirror at herself. Then see what comes from that. This was ok. Not bad. Keep discovering.
I think Helen Hart does a superb job as Wendla. She is committed to the lyris of the song and takes the audience on a journey with her. I really enjoyed the performance. :)
Hey, thanks for your comments. I agree this is quite intense and this was very much how the director interpreted the part. The whole show was presented in a similar style and this was in keeping with that style. I think he felt that to do justice to the later scenes in the show where Wendla asks Melchior to beat her (etc) ; you needed to see something in her that is deep and dark and intense from the beginning. It's all opinion and I appreciate them all :) Thankyou, Helen x
I am not a fan of this Wendla. She plays it too intense. I don't really feel like it should be that overdramatic. It's a girl thinking about sensuality and sexuality, something that everyone does and although it is a big thing, it should not be so dramatic. Just my opinion.
better than Léa Michele
