Hard to believe that 5 years have passed since this was first posted. Gillian still looks about the same, but David has grown up. He looks very much the kid here. Nice clip. Too bad the sound was never boosted a bit.
Simple and beautifully done.... Thanks, Gillian, for this song. You're free and will feel welcome to sing at our little Church! You would feel right at home!
@deborahkauffman09 I'll take Ms. Myrtle Miller singing an acapella version of "Amazing Grace", but this is a beautiful song. I like the Dailey-Vincent Band version also.
Thanks for that bit of info Fayeroe1009: I knew her parents were musicians and all and how she wrote many of her songs when she was young and before she started her adult musical career. Now I know why I like her so much as I myself loved the Carol Burnet show..
My pastor says that if you stick to eternal themes you will always be relevant. Welch and Rawlings (and Skaggs too), demonstrate this concept clearly.
Listen closely to the harmonies. They are carefully crafted (similar to shape-note singing). which makes it sound like music made 250 years ago in Appalachia.
TOTALLY. I've known for years that she wrote this one, but when I heard someone do it on PrairieHomeCompanion today, I had to look it up just to be sure it wasnt an ages-old gospel or traditional song. its excellent.
I can't decide - another great GREAT version was done by The Dry Branch Fire Squad. I like theirs better than Daliey and Vincent. But Gillian's version is much more authentic - much more personal.

Gillian Welch grew up in California, attended a college for aspiring professional musicians, Berklee School of Music in Boston, and moved to Nashville when she was 25. Yet she presents herself as a humble, born and bred downhome Southern girl, even effecting a Southern accent. Fake. And a little bit creepy.

now this is a great song and it has been covered numerous times in a relatively short period, but gillian welch's singing hurts her songs badly. There's too much yodeling mess in the the middle of lines and she is hit and miss with her pitch. But that's just my opinion
Well, she writes the songs, so the way she sings them are the way they're supposed to be :) I, personally think she has a phenomenal voice, and that's what I like about her music the most.
Utterly gorgeous. Even a hardened old atheist commie like me can be moved by the sheer excellence of this song and such a magnificent performance. There is only One Gillian Welch! Rawlings and Skaggs - what a band!
Flawless. Gillian and Lucinda are the world's number 1 and 2 at the moment. How did the country music establishment manage to lose touch with their beautiful music? And how come a 'Deadhead' ended up being the only one making a stand for it?
It doesn't get any better than this. Three fine musicians who seem to be in harmony with each other on so many levels. Keep posting this kind of material
Does anyone have any direction on how to understand how David Rawlings plays? He seems to be using a completely different scale, if you really listen it sounds like alien music. Not much on the net in the way of tabs, so I appreciate any help, theoretical or otherwise. Thanks!
This is a lesson for wannabe songwriters. Usually, the chorus just repeats between verses, without much ongoing relevance. Watch Gillian use the *same* chorus lyrics to serve three different purposes, after three different verses: Verse 1, chorus restates the title to set the hook; Verse 2, chorus answers the rhetorical question from the verse; Verse 3, chorus completes the theological assertion stated in the verse. Incredible craftsmanship.
what ??? one song attempt to cover ALL these two cover - i dont think so, please everyone listen to all or at least more of gillian and david have to share, their wonderful together, PEACE

The Dailey & Vincent version of this song seems more full bodied than this one somehow. Even thought there is one less voice and instrument.

Of all Gillian's offerings, I enjoy this the most.
The simplicity, as in a great sermon, or a spirit led exhortation, propels the gospel message, without frill, straight to the heart.

Great song, and thanks for posting it...
But you have the name of the song a little wrong.
It's "By The Mark" .. (no "S" )
Not a big thing, but the song deserves to be refered to by it's correct title.
Cheers,

When I cross over
I will shout and sing
I will know my savior
By the mark where the nails have been
CHORUS:
By the mark where the nails have been
By the sign upon his precious skin
I will know my savior when I come to him
By the mark where the nails have been

A man of riches
May claim a crown of jewels
But the king of heaven
Can be told from the prince of fools
CHORUS
On Calvary Mountain
Where they made him suffer so
All my sin was paid for
A long, long time ago
