  • Jay Siegal and the other two are still alive and have a full touring schedule. They still sound great today.

  • I was so sad that he passed away not to long after this performance. Great song, meledy, back up....IT'S ALL GREAT. And he sounded as good here as he did when he made the original record. And is it my imagination that these men get sexier as the get older? Check out Lou Christie, Frankie Valli...just to name a few. Thank you whoever posted this and thank you Jay Segal. Yoyu are missed!

  • Huge hit around summer of 1962...Tokens....Jay Segal never promoted his name much...turns out he

also wrote for The Happenings and other

big names...always great to see him.

  • love this funny song

    trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    xDD

  • Great song! Pure beauty! Too bad it's just 3min

  • The average song length is 3:00-3:50

  • repeat repeat !!!

  • is he robert jonh????

  • He is Dr. Jay Siegel of the original Tokens

  • this is just the best

  • these people seem to have so much fun making music, it's inspiring to look at.

  • This is such a difference in singer's face... Big difference and, the same time, he looks the same...

  • really good.

  • I've heard many versions through youtube but this live performance is soooooooo good. I smiled to my ears listening to this.

  • i think you mean that your smile reached from ear too ear? lol

  • Btw, it's "Ubimbuwe" and it means "You're a lion" in Zulu -.-...

  • Lol, when you stop watching and start listening, it's hillarious when out of the silence, a 'thud' sound comes on, and a stupid laugh. I find that very hysterical!

  • haha cool

  • Look its the penguin! 1:56

    haha

  • I cannot share with you how influential this song has been in my life due to space limitations. Suffice it to say, the first time I heard it was as a Junior in High School in 1963. WIBG of Philadelphia played it first in our area, Pennsauken, NJ.

I think it is one of the top 10 songs of all time.

In 1991 or 92, the Tokens were part of the show at Waterfront Park here in Portland, Oregon, and they just plain-assed stole that summer music fest with their 5 song performance. Just terrific.

  • cool lizard at the end!

  • beautiful song!

  • In Europe this is known as "Le Lion Est Mort Ce Soir". That translates to "the loin died tonight". What is the reason for the difference in other countries?

  • interesting. perhaps they both share the same literal meaning, that the threat is gone....but the africans perhaps use sleep as a euphemism.

though that is a total guess, and it still doesnt explain why europeans dont follow the tradition.

  • hahaha i had no idea that guy was white until now

  • A-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh, a-weema-weh

  • wowie

    that's really awesome

  • awesome! hayz! so pretty ^_^

  • nice nice

  • truebluehalliday, you said that if they would have called the song wimoweh it would'a been okey?? dont you know that the tokens didnt cover the original? they covered pete seegers version.. and by the way, they have named it different than original!! so shut up!!

  • The words are not... wim-oh-weh....its Mbube, Which is the Zulu word for Lion. Thats why all of the newer versions of this song lose all my respect...fair enough do a cover...but get it right.

  • There's always gotta be some jerk who has an axe to grind. This is the Tokens version, which was the one we knew and loved...go take your anal-compulsive political-correct BS and shove it.

  • whats the point in doing a version of a song when you change it to the point of it practically becoming a different song. If they had called the song, Wim oh weh. fair enough, but they're clearly trying to do a copy and have lost all touch with the origional.

  • is the real song on youtube and who sings it? ,thanks

  • WHO GIVES A FUCK!!! omg...its a good song

  • for someone who doesnt give a fuck and is only on to listen to the song, you certainly have alot to say.

  • So let's see .... this recent version of THE LION will have soon been seen by 2.5 million on YouTube?? ( must be a keeper ! ) haaaaaa ... I LOVE IT !

  • My Uncle Looks Like The Dude In The Blue Suit Jacket Thingy :P

  • Dude,

    that

    is

    AWESOME!

  • amazing

  • Frank Sinatra is the poster child for not keeping your voice healthy. Clearly the Tokens are the antithesis. Your voices are even better than the day I.... the day we, America fell in love your song in 1961. (KTWWS)

  • Cool video!!

  • Best song in the world

  • EXCELENTE!

  • This was so nice I cranked up the volume and woke up the lion. I'm in big trouble now.
