I was at this show. Feet pounding on the bleachers, thought they were gonna come down. 133 shows this was one of the best I ever saw. Wish there was more of it online.
The photo used here is NOT fromt hat show. That is from the Greek theater in 82. The photo (HORRIBLY CROPPED) was taken by Ron Delaney. Who ever has this photo I would love to get a full version. Or get ahold of Ron Delaney.
The tie dye backdrop is incredible in the full version. Dye by Courteney...
Thanks for posting this; I love both John Cippolina's and Jerry Garcia's guitar work. It would have been nice had Quicksilver Messenger Service stayed together as long and as amicably as the Grateful Dead but we can't have everything we love now can we ? My favorite Not Fade Away is from Feb. 11, 1970.
John and Jerry together.. It really doesn't get any better than this. I got to meet Jerry and the Dead backstage at the Dead/Dylan show at Oakland Coliseum and joined them for dinner..
(John was actually supposed to play that gig but something came up.. too bad)
I got to know John as a friend and I miss him very much. He was a true class act in a business that isn't known for them. I treasure those memories.
John Cipollina moved around--he went where the guys were playing the hot tunes; that's what I love about him--a free bird. He started and played with a lot of different bands, because he loved making a cool sound on his guitars.
This photo is from one of the Greek Theater shows. One I missed, unfortunately. I bought a copy of this from a women at the first Ventura show. What a great time.
GREAT VERSION! What a monster sound! The Grateful Dead were truly a behemoth of a band. And John Cipollina is one of our favorite guitarists! Thanks for posting this!
I still love the Dead and the QMS - since some decades - Dead with John is amazing - it looks like, all these comments are written by people from the Bay Area only - I am from the other end of the world. Peter Austria
nobody could make a guitar scream like john. When I think or acid rock i think of quicksilver and john's screeching guitar. only roy bucchanon could make a guitar whine as good as cip.
John Cipollina and Jerry Garcia were BOTH fantastic guitar players in the their own style i MISS them both the sad part for John was he never got the fame and notoriety that Jerry did with the Dead cause his bands thru the years never approached the Dead in popularity just remember them both especially today August 24 John would have been 65 RIP brothers see ya on the other side wherever the hell that is.
I agree with my friend Wier4ever. John wasn't as big of a commercial success as Jerry. And never quite got the fan following and recognition(where is my John Cippolina doll to go with Jerry?) QMS was just a bit more star crossed.
@cosmojh Uhhhhh, Jerry was no John Coltrane and understood that. Cipollina rocked, so he was always welcome onstage with the Dead, and I sure do miss them.
I never liked the Dead until a friend of mine literally dragged me to a Dead concert. I loved it. Ended years later in a Band with John Cipollina we ended up hanging out back stage with the Dead at Winterland. Something he had done tons of times but it was a first for me
>>HMMN. One Of THE GREAT ( Howard) "BO" DIDDLY HITS! In The Midst of A Gr. Dead & Maistro Jn. Cippolina JAM.... , much akin to the platonic,GK. balance and counterpoint of what is known widely as a "Romance Language"it aparantly formulates in these PENTATONIC Scores and Extreme Quality Note Value of this Recital! There, it seems.. perhaps, we've Described the sound, while yet lacking the offering of some "SHEET - MUSIC"!! A necessary road-map of sorts, for the CRAFTWORK!!
Another great one. Maybe I should do one of these with John and Man or will it be forthcoming?...in all honesty there is something in the Dead that I could never get to grips with....I know it's me and I'm not knocking them either.

Wow! Jerry Garcia and John Cipollina are two out of my three favorite guitarists, and this is amazing!!!
I'm fourteen years old, and I love 60s bands like The Dead and QMS. I'm a musician myself, and these bands are my inspiration.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Jerry was 20 times the musician as Cipollina. Jerry was like John Coltrane next to him.

Jerry had the greatest respect for John. Of course he was a lot brighter and had much better musical education than you ....
