THANK YOU ! FOR THIS,GEOFF IS AMAZING!THE ENTIRE BAND IS ONE OF MY ALTIME IF NOT TOTAL FAVORITE! THEIR ARTISTRY IS MEZMERIZING, LIKE GEOFF'S VOICE A COMPLETE AND TOTAL INSTRUMENT!!!!
I really wish Geoff would do more of this type of music. I saw the Queensryche Cabaret tour in Chicago (House of Blues 2010) and it was simply glorious. A medieval theme music crossover epic concept album please! ha! I dream.
@Chad01234 Geoff does what he wants to. You never know, if he got it in his head to do just that, I don't think the record execs could do much to stop him!
I really wish Geoff would do more of this type of music. I saw the Queensryche Cabaret tour in Chicago (House of Blues 2010) and it was simply glorious.
Geoff sang in a way appropriate to the setting and mood. As enjoyable as his upper range is, it would not have fit the mood of the song and most likely overpowered everything else.
@TraditionalTKD What you say makes perfect sense, but if you actually listen to the version where he uses his full range, it is fantastic, and in (more or less) the same mood as this one. Also, there is a 2009 accoustic version of Eyes of a Stranger out there, where Geoff screams to the accoustics, and, as odd as that may seem, it actually works out well. Geoff can pull stuff like that off, evan when no-one else can.
WOW. Beautiful rendition of one of Simon and Garfunkels greatest songs. Simon and G were one of the best acoustic duos ever and this is one that proves it.
@FalseWitnessScoob Actually, S&G didn't write this song. It's hundreds and hundreds of years old. 1400's, if IRC... The "Canticle" part was all them (Paul Simon). I love S&G's version because I grew up with it, but Geoff's voice is sooooo perfect for this song. Brooding and dark....oh my gods, so perfect!
I don't know, as far as I know his instructor also teached Opera singers. But he was trained to sing Rock. His instructor also teched Ann Wilson, Laney Stayne and Chris Cornell.
His Instructor's heir is Robert Lunte, who founded the Vocalist Studio. I don't hear Bel Canto techniques in Geoff's singing. If you do please point it out as I'd like to know.
@einarabelc5 you should know that you can't actually teach someone to song if they can't already. A vocal coach can give you exercises to help control your breathing, projection etc but beyond that it all comes from the individual. No one "taught" Geoff to sing the way he does, it's all natural talent.
@rbrebrook This version is a little disappointing. The one in Empire's remaster has him Reaching the Next Octave on the Second half and then coming back. Much more to my liking.
@einarabelc5 dude, this is an Unplugged performance! How would it have made sense for him to soar into the higher octaves when he's only backed by soft, acoustic guitars and light drumming??
No offense to anyone but Simon and Garfunkel for me is like having the runs,so I love this version and I've always boasted Geoff as being one of the best and John Arch too.
they/Qr- never wanted the make it into a DVD if you would see the whole uncut version you can see why.. MTV was very RUDE to the guys, but they used some nrs on the building empires DVD, but I might be mistaken..this was not on the dvd mentioned
Now why in the world would MTV want to be rude to them? Dont get me wrong I believe you - just I cant figure why they would be that way, with any one, let alone to a huge band like Queensryche. BTW, thanks for the info.
the MTV producer was never satisfied...the constant Make up work ups was clearly annoying to Geoff, he looked fine but still these ladies bugged him..they kicked over his water and he had too ask several times for new water ( a lady in the audience gave it him), the guitars were constantly out of tune, the MTV crew was never prepaired, clearly the boys of QR were annoyed, again if you have the uncut version I would not have to explain this
this is the worse version of the 2 scarborough fair 's they did at the uncut version of the MTV tapes, I am so fortunate to have the whole 90 minutes and this song was done 2 times, the other was way better!!!
What is this like, 2 octaves below what's in the record. It seems he had already started to traverse to the lower register by this time. As up until Rage for order he traveled very comfortable on the high registers.
Just noticed on the video description that it says that this is a Simon and Garfunkel song. It's not, it's originally an old english traditional song.
it says it's a Simon and Garfunkal "classic" and it is. Doesn't say they wrote it or it was their's originally. It is a S/G classic. But I've never heard it so good as Geoff beltin' it out!
QU's version of this on their box set it outstanding, but this version is just a great!!! It's always great to watch Chris play! Not to mention Geoff sing!!!! Oh yeeeeeeah!

Actually, I think it's more because screaming over the acoustic guitar would've sounded fucking stupid.
Lethkhar2000 2 years ago 14
Get a tuner and play Rage For Order, then play Empire. For Example Walk in The Shadows and The thin Line, similar songs.
You can use for Example the AP tuner. You'll notice what I'm talking about. From G6 to G4, right in the Chorus.
On the other hand...
WTH? If David Lee Roth does it over Blue Grass, anyone can do it.
"This is Mean Street" ;)
But taste wise. I think it sounds more medieval/celtic in the high pitches than in the lower ones. They should even had gotten a Pipe.
