One of the finest speeches ever made in the case for gun rights in Canada. Mr. Friedman's impassioned speech highlighted the thoughts of 2million gun owners in this great country and their deep desire for more fair, just firearms legislation. On February 15, 2012 the House of Commons finally passed Bill C-19 abolishing the infamous long-gun registry. It is thanks to the efforts of Mr. Friedman and countless others that the Canadian gun lobby has become more effective than ever.
Little bellicose lawyer puke probably hired by the NRA.
Guns should be monitored they take the registry away and offer nothing in return.Bit oh boy woth bill C12 they arw getting tough on crime.Conservative ideology is a menace to society
@humaner As another alfalfa male chimes in ignorant of facts. The NRA doesn't operate in Canada; its own constitution forbids it. There are 2 main orgs here CSSA and NFA. Every Province has a smaller org fighting for the same thing and end to C-68 aka the Firearms Act. Some are willing to work with the Gov. to design a system that actually works. Then there are those of us that know that it is a right to have and to carry arms. BTW its C-10 not C-12
@MrKilroi sorry guns kill people .People cannot be trusted as evidenced by mass shootings and gangsters.Hunters that kill animals for pleasure are sickos.
@humaner So by your logic that no one can be trusted with firearms then we should not allow women to keep their children and they should be taken from their homes and taken care of by the state. I mean, there is much evidence that women commit acts of child abuse far more often than men. So it stands to reason that women are not to be trusted around children and therefore should not be allowed access to them for fear that they harm them.
What I find interesting is that I read comments about how these people rely on evidence and empirical data, YET in this video, Mr. Friedman supplies no evidence or data to support what he claims. For example. he makes the claim that the LGR has no discernible impact on crime, BUT he supplies no evidence of this. As a lawyer, he should know this claim is worthless without any proof.
Tell me of one case where the LGR has saved even one life. Did you even listen to the video? If it's that easy to save lives then why not register knives, rocks, bats and screwdrivers, would we not save many more lives if we did?
@loco4dogg Do you understand burden of proof? I made no claim whatsoever. He made a claim that the LGR had no discernible impact on crime. He has a burden of proof. He supplied no evidence, or even stats to prove his claim. Maybe you should listen more closely to the video, and listen for this evidence.
@loco4dogg I have seen no proof either way, so till it comes forth, I will continue to stay on the fence and admit I do not know. I just have a hard time with either side spreading rhetoric without any proof. If you can support your view, then great, but if you only say that "no lives were saved by the LGR", then you require evidence of such, and no one to this point has supplied it. If you choose to say " in my opinion...", then fine. your opinion is as such, and requires no evidence.........
@loco4dogg ...... If there is "lots" of evidence and all one has to do is ask, then please supply the evidence that the LGR has made no discernible impact. All I have heard is opinion passed as evidence.
I will find some time in the near future to supply you with the titles of reports, book and any other data I can find for your consideration. It sound like your on the right track by keeping and open mind. I believe that after you read the data you will easily determine that guns are just that, a tool and only a tool, how one chooses to use it it up to them and whether it be a firearm or a pointy stick that is all it is without action.
@loco4dogg I always keep an open mind. But what my opinion is of the registry that although it may not prevent all crimes (nothing will), it is also not as much of a punishment, or hassle as many people are letting on. I registered all my firearms when it came into existence, and really suffered no ill because of it. And many many people I know including some who have over 50 firearms, have suffered no ill because of it. A minor inconvenience.................
So because you or those you know have suffered no ill effect it makes it a good law? Wait until you have forgotten to re-register a firearm, unlike a car or dog licence, you could easily find yourself in front of a judge answering criminal charges rather then a small fine or less. I'm not saying you should have to register any of these items, cars kill more people then firearms and registering cars has not stopped these deaths. A criminal will do what criminals do, break the law.
@loco4dogg First, you do not have to re-register guns. Second, I did not comment at all on whether the LGR was good or poor. I commented on the point that I believe the registry is not a "punishment" as claimed by many, and a minor inconvenience at best. Third, murder laws does not prevent all murders, so should we do away with them. To displace the argument serves no purpose. Guns are not cars. Never were, and never will be.
@loco4dogg ........ So, I need evidence to condemn, or support the LGR, and will not do it blindly, as I have witnessed many many people on here doing so, on both sides of the argument. I also do not accept blindly evidence. As an example I have been directed towards Lotts book countless times, and have read it and the refutations of it, and it does not hold water when looked at under a microscope. Many stats in it are mined to most advantage, and need to be looked at deeper.
There is no evidence for or against. Cops are trained to approach all residences with extreme caution. Criminals don't follow the law, so their guns or violent weapons will not be registered. For all we know they could have a fully auto or semi (MP5 confiscated in Edmonton recently)
Really, why should I have to wait 2-3 months to have a gun in my possession if acquired from family through inheritance in the future.
I have my FAC, police can scan for that before a raid...
I'm sure you folks are aware of the problems we have here in the UK. The socialists have done a great job in herding gun owners into weekend gun clubs. As for those of us who speak on RKBA /self defence issues we're are seen as fringe element threat. An honest politician standing by an honest cop backed up by a skilled lawyer like Mr Friedman would help. Hard to find that combo over here though. Some of us are still pitching - wish us luck!
@64460242 All to well; more is the pity that the English Bill of Rights 1689 is just a statute in England. Here in Canada it actually forms part of our Constitution and is part of The Supreme Law of the Land. Trouble is few politicians like to obey the law. We have to fight for every right they try to take away. They are also pathetically ignorant of history as well.
Mr. Friedman, you're a credit to your profession and a fine human being. Thank you for your concise, clear, and irrefutable testimony at the C-19 hearings.

Big Macs kill more people than guns in Canada.
Your chances of being struck by lightning is 4 times greater than being shot by a licensed Canadian gunowner.

I wasn't disputing your need for proof, there's lots of it so all one has to do is ask for it.
I was asking you for proof that the LGR does work, it's obvious you believe it does.

away with the need for a license(criminal record check) to posses a firearm but even with that in place, criminals will always find a way.
