Not sure where you're getting your stats about pre-Castro Cuba. I studied some Cuban history in grad school. Most Cubans were desperately poor prior to Castro's revolution. That's why Castro had the support of the Cuban population when he overthrew Batista.

Those numbers come from a 1956 study from the US dept of state, but are available elsewhere.
You are correct that much of the wealth was in the hands of a few. This was also the case (and often still is) throughout Latin America.
I am not arguing that life was peachy keen for all of Cuba's poor - we are talking relative numbers here.
I think Castro's charisma had something to do with his success, together with the normal anger felt by the poor in any country.
