But because of this, the energy would be transfered into the occupants' bodies. Now, cars are built with crumple zones to absorb that energy. This Smart car is all hype. I have a '93 Civic CX and it manages to get 9 more mpg in the city, 5 more on the highway, AND it's a real car, not some goofy looking rolling telephone booth. It's fun to drive, has a pretty good amount of pep for what it is (same hp and 23 more ft-lbs at 2500 rpm lower than the smart, which makes it much nicer to drive), it handles great, has 3 more seats, and it's reliable as hell (my CX has over 309,000 miles on it). Chew on that Smart owners.
Civic CX seems the right car for your needs, you are very lucky to have one!
Wish I could also find all the qualities I need in just one car but I'm not so lucky. So for now I will stick to Smart that does quite well for 90% of my needs and keep renting the appropriate car for my other needs.

Look, its a compact car...beyond compact. You can't store much or take more than one friend along for the ride. Nor does it really have safety features that will help you in REAL highway accidents. Nor does it have the power to deal with MODOT's ignorance of winter weather.
Please please please PLEASE don't buy this car unless you live where your travel can be done without highways. We have enough people dying already.
I have seen the original footage of this clip. They crashed the Smart car at 70 mph. What you don't see in this clip is that the passenger door still works perfectly.
That said however, NO CAR will save you if you go from 70 to 0 like that. Your internal organs would be crushed by the sheer force. If you survive a crash like that you can come to Vegas with me any day to be be my lucky charm.

Thats ALL well and good BUT there is still one proble. Anyone put through an Accident is travelling at the same speed as the vehicle crashing, and also they under go the same deceleration as the car when it hits something. During that time of lets say 70kmph - 0kmph ALL your body organs including the heart, lungs, liver, spleen + brain etc all move forward in the body and crash into one another, can tear or completly be detatched such as ther Aorta.
Though it did end up seeming a bit tight around the steering column and the wheel itself moved forward quite a bit. But even so a 70 mph one of those is bound to do alot of damage to your body even though you aren't injured by the cars components itself.
I think the main point is that the car did NOT get ripped apart. A mixture of good engineering and light weight. That's a reassuring video right there.

Notice also that this was not a direct head on. Impact forces appear to be at about 30 deg. left of the vehicle centerline. A good deal of the forces are dissapated diagonally through the structure, and the remaining are bled off as the vehicle continues off to the side. Also note there is a dummy in the vehicle. Properly belted in and with an airbag there is a probability of survival, although very low, and injuries would be massive.

The smart did good, the cockpit didn't get crushed and the airback would have protected you from the crash it self. Hitting a concrete wall it's as save as your huge trucks and SUV:s. The extra body doesn't help when you have extra forces (mass) crushing you. Hitting an other car, mass is ofcourse good for you, but not in general (if you think the other guy aswell). Anyway, safety is just a stuppid excuse to drive huge cars. Especially when there is something between a Smart and a Hummer aswell.

they were like a heavy SUV that could stop a small car very quickly (like a smart) causing a lot of damage to your body...A SUV would move much more those barriers because of it's weight so the desacceleration would be much more lower, saving your life.

Yeah, that would be my concern. The deceleration looks higher because of less body to absorb the impact forces. I wonder if they have some special construction to compensate for that and lessen the deceleration.

well.. my smart car cost me about 19000 after tax,shipping and i get about 111MPG... hmmm never seen another car get 111mpg... and it is one of the safest cars on the road...... but hell if you want to keep paying way to much for fuel and not even give the car a chance be my guest.... I was the same at first untill I started to do some RESEARCH!! you retard... LOL

Thats ALL well and good BUT there is still one proble. Anyone put through an Accident is travelling at the same speed as the vehicle crashing, and also they under go the same deceleration as the car when it hits something. During that time of lets say 70kmph - 0kmph ALL your body organs including the heart, lungs, liver, spleen + brain etc all move forward in the body and crash into one another, can tear or completly be detatched such as ther Aorta.

Though it did end up seeming a bit tight around the steering column and the wheel itself moved forward quite a bit. But even so a 70 mph one of those is bound to do alot of damage to your body even though you aren't injured by the cars components itself.
