  • Part of the problem is that the music isn't a live orchestra and doesn't allow the actor any cantabile to work with. The music forces them to rush through it. Regardless, these kids did a great job and probably had a once-in-a-lifetime experience in doing this fabulous musical.

  • @gfunk449 Huh? What music isn't live? There indeed was a totally live orchestra. Yeah - this small cast grew especially close to each other and had a great time rehearsing and performing their roles. ;-}}

  • Pretty good. My dream is to play Bobby in a production of Company one day.

  • ok. So, no doubt this actor can sing the song. I thought he sang it and sang it well. I just feel it was...lacking the emotions. I really felt like he could have given more. I mean, this song is his moment to finally realize what he's being doing with his whole life. This song is his big turning point. It felt like he didn't connect with the song.

Like I said, his vocals were good. Just wish he had given more life to the piece

  • This is awful.

  • Back at-cha!

  • Oww - I have an idea. Search the comments about 2 years ago for "obcallus," and tell the actor what you think of him. It'll make his day.

It eludes me what compels a person to make a crappy comment.. with no explanation.

  • Good voice-but not really the emotional breakthrough Bobby should have-not really powerful enough-but with acting training he'll be great-his voice is quite pretty.

  • i understand that these are kids performing, etc. I think Bobby needs to stand still rather than try to emote physically. Bobby is having an emotional breakthrough, a person wouldn't exactly be moving their arms in circular patterns. He sounds good, the notes are there, i think he should have put more emotion into his voice though, he seemed to have a flat tone to it and didn't really belt the last note. Just my personal opinion, great job to everyone involved though.

  • I'm very impressed!

Wish my highschool had tables that dissappeared into the stage :P

  • not cool enough...fighting.

  • Thanks for your input.

  • I've just been cast as Bobby in my University's production of Company, and I am very unsure of whether I will do the part justice due to me only being 21. So I can see where the nay-sayers are coming from. But, you have to give the cast credit, they sound pretty brilliant :D

  • OOPS - just read your comment. If I read it 2 months ago, I'd have written:

Congrats!! What university? So, you're only 21. Big deal. You see movies; you watch TV. You therefore have a good idea what's going on in Bobby's head. Just relate to the other actors & {especially} communicate with the audience.. Feel your lines; don't just recite what you've memorized.. & you'll be fine. You know the drill!

Have a great time with this wonderful piece. The small cast promotes good friendship-building.

  • high schools have no business doing this show. it's completely over their heads.

  • my high school's doing this show for our spring musical. its gonna be amazing.

  • totally agree. they lack voice and they lack acting "strength"

  • This is done so well. I like the way the lighting changes focus as the different players speak. Most HS productions don't do that. The young man playing Robert does a great job. I enjoy this school's production.

  • Oh for crying out loud all this crap about life experience and Sondheim age appropriateness. Chill out and just enjoy this video. These young folks do an excellent job with this production.

  • It sounds horrid.

  • I like the set especially with the table going down into the stage. The song is mediocre.

  • It's unfair to ask someone 17 or 18 years old to do this song. I can't think of another song that requires as much subtext and emotional recall as this one. Bobby's whole polar attitude change happens in this song alone. He goes from complaining about all the things that marriage means, to practically demanding it. Plus it's the last number, which makes it even more important to knock out of the park. Probably why Sondheim put in the big curtain call number.

  • I see a lot of critical comments on this vid. Sure, it's not the best, but take into account that this is an EXTREMELY hard song to sing and pull off. I have yet to see anyone (amateur or professional) who both sings it brilliantly and acts the hell out of it. That said, he didn't do a bad job, but he could have added more emotion.

  • Not bad for a high school production! My high school might be doing this next year, I hope so.

  • and not to nit pick or anything but the second last note is somewhat dodgy!!

  • bobby's a bit nasally, and his punctuation is terrible!! All of the other actors were good though.

  • Nasally?? His nose is the size of Missouri! What da ya expect.

I do not agree with your "punctuation" comment.. but I'm too close to be totally objective.

  • I could be totally wrong . . . it could just be the fact that it's a video!! things are always better live. I don't intend to be mean, it's just when everything is good something fixable like a nasally performance annoys me.

  • Nah.. you're not entirely wrong.. and YES, viewing a LIVE performance is always more of a thrill [than watching a video]. Just like EVERY high schooler after 4 ~ 6 months of rehearsals.. he had a bit of a cold. Also, there was a major technical issue with the video; the audio was lost [EEEK!]. What you're hearing is a "resurrected" poor-quality audio-tape [from that SAME performance], sync'd to the video. Making it sound "okay" created a sort-of "canned" sound. It was either THAT.. or nothing!

  • alright, well under the circumstances, bravo!! It was an good production and it's not like Sondheim is easy to perform!!kudo's and all that!! Can't wait for the next show!!

  • I thought you are all so talented. My life theater goal is to be in Company. I have sang this song a few times and thought this kid was great. It takes guts to tackle this because its so hard. Yes, you guys made some mistakes but, it was great outcome.

  • What the f**k! Ur all a bunch of pretencious twats the way you comment on these videos! who the hell are you all the have the right to say stuff like you do!!!

  • Perfect reason why high schools shouldn't do Company.

Emotions about marriage...high school kids just don't understand.

  • Please don't second-guess the abilities and level of understanding of these high school actors OR any-age actors. Sheltering students from "these" life-issues keeps them crippled. Somebody has got to open the doors, and this HS does it! Perfect reason why high schools SHOULD do Company.

  • I totally agree with you leo. HS young men and women are not naive at all to life issues. I'm glad this HS did Company. Only wish i was in your area so i could have seen the entire show. I love going to HS Productions and compare them to the many shows i've seen first hand on Broadway. HS talent impresses me so much.

  • Um - that's what YOU say!! Some Sondheim is tricky, some isn't. There are plenty of Sondheim tunes that are "do-able" by anyone.

    I read your comment and thought to myself, "Who the hell is this?" {friendly, not bitter}, so I read your mini-bio profile. I LOVE the last line. THAT explains all. ;-}

  • You couldn't be anymore wrong. Do a search of Sondheim, auditions, and age appropriate. Then you can apologize.

  • Emotional musicals that have meaning...at least it is not "Little Miss Sunshine" or "Anything Goes" like we had to do back in the day because "no one wants to see reality or a sad ending" according to our Drama teacher...please...all high schools need to tackle Sondheim...he is R&H and L&L...and he might just make us think...scary, I know, and grow and learn and move into life just a little bit better for experiencing his genious that translates from Broadway to high school so miraculously.

  • I love all the clips of this show you have. I'm so envious of your talent and production quality.

  • My personal directing opinion is that Bobby should of just stayed open to the audience while the rest of the company said their lines - it just looks odd seeing Bobby turning around everywhere. Great production, though!

  • Thanks for the comment. You're seeing only 8 minutes of the performance. Bobby was directed to always interact with "his married-crazy-friends" throughout the piece, and for consistancy sake, he continued so, in this number.

  • I really enjoy all the clips from all the shows at this high school. Such talented young folks.

  • the acting -- hateful! this guy is for the FIRST TIME in his life HUNGRY for some one to drive him crazy and love him! i wanted to die after watching this!

  • Well, it's been a half hour.. I hope that you've recovered from your will to die. While this clip doesn't show the actor off extremely well, I wouldn't head for the highest bridge and jump just yet. Take a look at some other clips from this HS show, if you'd like.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • Since when is Bobby gay?

  • Now, aren't YOU the pleasant person! I'm sure that a [then] 15 year old loves comments like yours, when he's trying his damn-dest to act in an intense leading role.

  • Does it matter?

  • your singing is average but your acting was very boring in this song

  • Ehh his voice is too nasal for me, if he opened up more he would have made this number amazing.

  • By the way this is just some constructive criticism, so don't go and start screaming at me and calling me a "Video Basher" or whatever...

  • Too nasally?.. with a honker like his???? Come---on?!?! <[Hope he doesn't read this!!]

  • lol!! Hehh hehhhh...

  • For a fifteen year old highschooler, this is great!

A few sharp notes and overboard handgestures do not a terrible performance make.

This is adorable, and at the very least genuine.

  • this kid is 15? wow. love his voice.

  • This is coming from an actor. If you're interested in my stuff I only have two clips on youtube that include me. Search Owilde1 in the search bar and my clips are Pirates of Penzance and Gypsy.

Good stuff, though. Hope you can take my constructive critism as advice, not as cruelty.

  • I'll check it out. Thanks!

    See, if you've read my last few replies... I can be civil!!!! It HURTS, but I'm doing it. ;-}

You might notice if you've read all my replies on all the clips, that I usual answer with the same "attitude" as the poster. And... many of them STILL don't "get it!"

  • Great voice, speaking and singing. The only thing I can say is that Bobby has this habit of expressing everything with his hands--which isn't necassary, and isn't really a good tactic. What makes Raul Esparza's performance amazing and particularly special is that it's all expressed in his voice and eyes. An actor really should only rely on that.

  • It's interesting that you mention his hands. He gave the director alot of trouble by NOT using any hands, so they were "choreographed" in. I guess he might have gone a bit overboard. Remember that this was the actor's first leading role... and he was 15 years old.

  • Sort of unfair if you don't allow peopple to voice opinion. It's fair if you get angry if they're harsh. These people are expecting Raul Esparza, and they get cranky when they don't see a performance like his.

  • I allow posts of ALL comments, unless they attack an actor [or me] by name. I especially will leave CRAZED comments for all to point-and-laugh at. BTW - I'm not a Raúl fan.

  • Okay, so I see how there's this war over negative comments. This is a good, good, high school production of Company- an adults show. Show them some respect. But, to the poster of this video...you can't nix constructive critism.

  • Constructive critism is welcomed. It's the out-of-left-field wacko comments that piss me off. Comments like "THIS SUCKS." with ZERO explanation makes me crazy!!!

  • Just a general comment to the clip-owner-- It boggles my mind why some people feel compelled to knock a performance video. I've viewed over 1000 clips. If I like them, I throw a compliment.. If not, I keep my mouth shut, or make "some" positive comment about what I see. These clips are for entertainment. If you HATE it.. don't watch it. Cowards hide behind their keyboards!

  • E X A C T L Y ! !

  • OMG..This is terrible...

  • Thanks for sharing.. but don't tell me... direct your comment to the 15 year-old actor, face-to-face, so to speak. Scroll up to "obcallus" and ask him why he sucked big time! He's a big-boy now and can take the bashing.

  • Thanks. I feel like dying a little bit now...

I have an idea, why don't you send me a clip of something you've done with all of the talent you lead me to believe you have. After all, you must be amazing to be able to make a comment such as that to someone you don't even know.

  • That was written so long ago..that was mean...I am actually listening to it now..you sound great...I can't believe its a HS production...You are very talented...please disregard my very rude comments...I wish you much success with your career..Mark

  • sorry have to agree with jm615... he is flat. good on a school for doing this though. Wish I had seen it.

  • No need to say "sorry!" If your ears hear flat, then it's flat. Actually I thought that he was a bit sharp at times. Hmmm, if we average both our perceptions, he's right on!

  • "Being a FLAT"!! Not bad, just flat almost every note.

  • I don't know..?.. I heard some SHARP too. Let's just average the notes together!

  • good idea. He's not bad, he has a lot of room to grow, and definitely has some great potential, just some pitch problems.

  • He's in college now, and I don't think he's acting [or singing]. Ask him yourself. Scroll up to "obcallus," click on it and send him a message.

  • he is gd but doesn't have much expression in his voice xxx but ova wise very gd xxx

  • This is excellent for high school...love the staging! :)

  • Good voice but I agree with samhug very emotionless which is hard with a song with such emotion in it. This is way to complex of a musical for a high school. Senior or Freshman WAY to young.

  • jerdo1987,

First click on "view all comments," then look under "sambug" for a user named "obcallus." He's the actor who performed this song. Now tell him what you think of him!

Also, please check-out these other COMPANY clips for more of his performance:

    Marry Me a Little

    Company - opening number

    Side by Side by side

  • It's interesting that young armchair experts have grown into Sondheim anyalsts of 'his' complexities in determining what is the right or wrong AGE to feel emotion, or is it that todays 'teens' don't think emotion is being displayed unless it is being SCREAMED? I guess Garland was TO young for 'Rainbow'as well and not emotional enough cause she didn't scream it. Check out Dean Jones' version. This BOBBT is 100% better!!

  • It's easy to criticize, harder to truly critique. Granted, Raul Esparza is proof positive that one's life experience and tenure can really add new dimension to this song. But I don't think that takes away from this kid's performance. He deserves serious props for not being content with performing the typical B'way garbage.

  • I thank you very much for your kind words.

  • Were you Bobby in this? I thought you were good. Robert is like one of my dream roles. I thought you were awesome in these clips.

  • I thank you very much for your kind words.

  • I totally agree with that.

  • Pretty awful. He's emotionless and not up to the song.

Musicals this complex, emotionally and musically, shouldn't be performed in schools if this kind of thing is the result.

  • Why don't you ask the actor himself, why he was so miserable? If you look one comment up, you can click on his name [obcallus] and write directly to him.

Errr...but his tie was a very pretty red!

  • Did it make you feel like a better person to post that comment? Do you think that the people involved in that piece wanted to hear that? Did they need to hear that 3 years after the fact. I suggest you get a new hobby and stop bashing high school productions on the internet.

  • you know company is really such a complex musical to begin with, and it is high school. i think this guy did a wonderful intrepretation of being alive. the song itself is so hard to pull off, and i think he did wonderful.

yes all of this is my opinion, but i would much rather say something nice rather than bash someone, especially when theres no need.

  • THANKS - it seems that the current YOUTUBE trend is to bash. It's especially nice to read an encouraging comment like yours!!

  • I thought you did a great job with this role and this song.

  • I'm sorry Bobby, but I kind of need to agree with samhug. You needed more emotion. You did a good job with the notes and timing, it's just this is such a big song for Bobby. This is the song where he takes his "leap". I honestly think you did a great job and so did everyone on the cast, but more emotion would have been incredible!

  • I'm not making excuses.. but he was 15 years old. PLEASE search another song that he sang, "Marry Me a Little." I think he does better there.

  • We weren't acting by the time that show hit the stage. We actually all were the very best of friends. It's truly amazing how an experience like that can change a person. It changed all of us for the better, and I don't think any one of the cast would argue with that. Thanks for all the memories.

  • It was obvious!!! I guess that's why we won the Rising Star Awards.

Thanks for everything you contributed to all the productions in which you were involved.

  • Thank you very much for all of the great memories. I'll never forget this cast.

    G

  • I know right?? I miss it SO much! By the way... take it from the nipple.

  • Were u in this production?

  • obcallus was Bobby... giblixo was Sarah... ZB2002 was the director... and I was NOTHING!

  • I think obcallus did a pretty good job with this song. It's my favorite song in the show. I want to do this show. COMPANY is such a great show. The revival is amazing! I wish my school did Sondheim, don't think it'll happen. Great job to all in this production

  • I actually just shed a tear. I can't believe how long ago that was. It feels just like yesterday. I was only a sophomore in high school and that's when my life peaked. Now, if that's not depressing, I don't know what is.

  • I don't think that song was in the right key. Does anyone know if it was lowered?

  • There is no such thing as a right key or wrong key. I guess you mean that it was not in the original key.

I'll check with the director.. wait.. dialing.. .. .. Crap, he doesn't answer his cell. I'll get back to you with the answer later.

  • Okay... I found out:

We performed the revival score which has this song [and several others] in a different key. Yes, the key was lower in the revival score [than the original score].

  • How can this be the revival score when the revival came out in 2006 and this is a 2004 production??

  • There was an earlier [B'way] "revival" in 1995, a Donmar Warehouse [London] "revival" in 1996, and a Kennedy Center [Wash DC] "revival" in 2002. I am most familiar with the DC production, so I was comparing that one to the original.

  • Ohhhhh you mean those revivals... I love the Kennedy Center one that was with Debra Monk! Love herrr!!

  • Wasn't it:

    Kennedy Center - Lynn Redgrave?

    B'way - Debra Monk?

  • Well I could be wrong, but there was a revival with Debra Monk and Jane Krakowski. Debra played Joanne and it must've been amazing lol.

  • Did you actually see the DC production? Lucky duck.

  • When it works, IT WORKS!!!! Great job.

  • Awesome. :)
