With all due respect, I think they actually do. While surfers are at a greater risk (for obvious reasons), what we have to understand is that the chances of a shark attack are not very high. As a result, surfers see no reason why they shouldn't carry on with their ocean-going activities. They probably know the risks; they might also already know that deadly encounters with sharks do not happen often.

This is another great piece of evidence that sharks are not the man eating mindless killers many people see them as. FAIL.

A seal is a prey they have eaten for prehaps thousands of years and I would say they learn from an early age that seal shape and smell = food where as the human shape and smell does not trigger that hunting mechanism as much. Bare in mind though that traces of urine and sweat will carry in the water and that would mean food to a shark. From a distance a shark may see a person as a seal but that would only be the closest logical connection....

a. an easy meal

b. there to be eaten

hunger is a very strong force in all life.

let us not forget that in most recorded attacks on humans the human is not eaten. some is eaten but not all. The conclusion from that is we do not taste good! ;)

They beat us on smell by a very long way. they can see better than us in water but as a comparison we can see the sun which is millions of miles away and we an focus to about 20 miles That beats a shark hands down. hearing is not a sharks strong point either. admitedly a sharks sense of smell is very very good and could claim to beat all our senses.

@neddomac I spent 3 years studying sharks and rays and I can honestly say that they are in the top 3 evolutionary species in the water. By this I mean that as top of the food chain predators( in thier natural environment) they cannot be beaten except by members of the whale family. I guess you are right because thier senses in terms of chemical signal and neuro chemical reaction are outstanding. It is thier brain capacity( computational power) that lets them down.

Put us in water and we struggle to compete we aid this with flippers.harpoons,breathers etc etc. put a shark on land and it ceases to be a threat( as long as you dont get too close ;) I think the key thing with humans is that over the eons we have exchanged sensory evolution for brain power ( problem solving)
