I am a salesman on a lot that sells Hyundai, Audi, Mitsu, and VW. I am not partial to the brands because I sell them, but because they are some of the best vehicles out there. I have driven the Genesis and find it to be a better ride, easier to use, and more affordable than a lot of Mercedes and BMW's. But then again, none of these compare to Audi. If you are looking for old luxury, look Mercedes or BMW. Two brands where you are paying for a badge rather than performance luxury.

Not bad considering the following:

1) Automatic transmission (manual is generally more efficient)

2) RWD (FWD is generally more efficient)

3) 5.0L (smaller engines are generally more efficient)

In fact, I was expecting less than that. Something along the line of 18-20% loss considering all these factors (which would make it 343-352hp).

Brake Horsepower is measured at the flywheel under no load, which is why these manufacturers can record such high numbers. Horsepower is measured at the wheels under the regular cars load usually on a Dyno which are the more accurate numbers. Theres also another way to measure horsepower, they figure mathematically what the engine should put out then they subtract horsepower due to drag coeffiecients from other parts like the a/c fan clutch and they get a number

@JimInNashville I took a 30 min drive in a Hyundai Genesis 4.6 and whiles it's a good feeling car overall it still isn't as refined as the Benz. The ride is a bit jiggly and I noticed a few shudders here and there plus the doors don't shut as solid. MBZ cars are far more solid and iron out road imperfections better. That being said Hyundai did make a good effort on the Genesis and they might perfect it in the coming years.

Thats about right. Flywheel horsepower is what ALL car makers quote. That is the rating of the engine only. A chassis dyno measures power at the wheels and there are roughly 50KW (70HP) transmission losses due to ratios, wheel sizes, friction, weight etc. This applies to ALL cars.

Yup, that's why they back up their powertrains with 100,000 mile warranties out of the box. does GM, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, or Chrysler dare to match? Nope. I gotta disagree there, the Camry/Accord still outsell the Sonata by a large margin. Not to mention, the V-6 equipped Camry/Accord are faster and drive better than the 2.0L turbo Sonata. It really needs a manual or dual-clutch option as conventional transmissions always perform poorly with small-displacement turbocharged engines running somewhat high boost.

But, they're at the crank, not at the wheels unfortunately. You have to consider the amount of power loss through the drivetrain to estimate horsepower at the wheels.
