Lemon Gooey Butter Cake: Real Women of Philadelphia Season 2

I made a butter cake , but not with the cake mix from scratch. I tastes sooo good. One thing I think I am doing wrong is the top starts to get not so gooey. I guess I'm cooking to long. My mom says in Phila when she bought it from a store she use to go to as a kid the top was alittle crunch to it just alittle and I am trying to get that . Could that be sugar that is put on top and melted? Could some one give me some ideas on that.
