Wow! FINALLY another band besides Dream Theater that has awesome vocals (with REAL singing - not just grunting and screaming) to go with their stellar instrumentals! How the hell could I never have heard of these guys before? I'll be telling all my friends about them, starting now.
@bradff7 Thanks! I just discovered Hammerfall, too. Didn't like them quite as much as Seventh Wonder, but they were definitely worth listening to. I appreciate the suggestions! I'll check 'em out.
@epicsteve You might also give these bands a try if you like clean singing: Pagan's Mind Andromeda Altaria Avantasia Avenged Sevenfold Firewind Kamelot Leverage Masterplan Stratovarius Symphony X (not their latest album, Iconoclast, that one sucks, Paradise Lost is best)
@Fleatheverrybest I've heard a few Symphony X songs that didn't do much for me, but I love most of their songs that I've heard so far and I've been planning to buy Paradise Lost. Thanks for the other suggestions!
@DantesLastShowDown Thanks! I'll give them a listen. Another couple of bands I discovered the same day I found Seventh Wonder that I really liked are Haken and especially Darkwater. I'm pretty picky, I guess. I love virtuoso shredding, but it can't just be over the top of what I consider "mindless grinding." I love complex stuff with lots of key and time signature changes. But I'm bored with macho posturing and try-to-shock-your-parents death metal. Too cartoonish.
I've just discovered this band less than 10 minutes ago, and this song just blew my mind!
@DantesLastShowDown I used to think that but then I discovered Opeth. I don't like their newest album, and I don't like their first one either, but the ones in between range from good to fucking amazing. They have a really interesting mix of death metal and prog rock styles: /watch?v=26qUFv_GMmM (this one is not metal, it's prog rock) /watch?v=kenyBvpL0qQ /watch?v=wpkHg8p64Yc
cheese and rice, i just totally realized that my favorite indie prog artist ever made a reference to this song in a song of his. if he respects this band so much, it means that to me this band is practically a group of gods.

Also if you like DT check out Dreamscape - The End of Light (in 2 parts here on youtube)... very DT...ish

Is Mercy Falls a concept album??? I looked at the lyrics and thought that memories were the father's and son's switching inbetween songs until the tragic end... Just my theory. Correct me if I'm wrong.
A man is in a car crash (as heard in A New Beginning and Back in Time) and slips into a deep coma in which he dreams he is in a town called Mercy Falls. The album switches between the real world and the world of Mercy Falls.
God bless the Scandinavians - ALL OF YOU. You kept metal alive during the trying times when grunge ruled my country. Now, you are at the vanguard of a huge invasion force. PLEASE BRING GOOD MUSIC HOME TO ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disregard, Seventh Wonder is actually starting to grow on me a bit. I suppose this song in particular just reminded me a little too much of Spheric Universe Experience.
Is it just me, or is there a circle of underground prog bands who all sound exactly the same?
Don't know, maybe I'm just talking out my ass, but it sounds to me like a certain bunch of smaller prog bands have similarities ranging from song tone and structure to the same exact instrument settings.
@Iceman3524 This song in particular sounds quite a bit like Spheric Universe Experience, but also reminds me somewhat of Circus Maximus and Andromeda. This got under my skin a bit, since I personally find Spheric Universe Experience to be almost insultingly formulaic, but as I've listened to more of SW's work, they've grown on me more.
@Foxer35 some underground prog bands sound similar, but that's just from being in the same genre and getting inspiration from other similar bands. A lot of prog metal bands have their unique sound like SW, DT, SX, etc. Actually, come to think about it, almost all prog bands sound diff. it's the power metal and other genres that sound the same (although i love power metal, only if the band is unique tho, cant stand the constant same beats of some bands. Kamelot, SA, etc. are fantastic).
let's all stop talkin bout DT on a SW's video/song comments...comparation being made between DT and SW (even, between any bands) only demonstrates iether u just keep considering DT as the progmetal archetype (which isn't that far from truth) or u are ignorant enough to listen to any band and continue criticising those whom u don't fancy that much...Enjoy music!
Dream Theater is not the end all be all of Progressive Metal. So many just use the name because it is about all they can relate to progressive metal. Seventh Wonder, Vanden Plas, Andromeda, anything AAL has touched, Fates Warning, Pagan's Mind and many others all stand out in my mind and on their own. Everyone stop quoting Dream Theater on these videos, it gets sad when one band dominates a scene completely. Reminder:Copy and paste this on all the thrash metal videos changing to Metallica.
just got into this band. VERY catchy vocals/choruses. I recommend to all lovers of good music. Fans of Dream Theater, Angra, Symphony x, Circus maximus, Shadow gallery, Kamelot, and others, will not be disappointed.
I still maintain DT are not good song writers but are rather good instrumentalists. There's no need for someone to know all words of the dictionary to write a love letter but only the right tone and wordings,DT lack this.SW has it,this song is a well written song.
@silvertear1 DT are outstanding songwriters, nobody would listen to them otherwise. Just because they deviate from the pop mentality of songwriting. Poor songwriters couldn't write stuff like Learning to Live, Pull me Under, Voices, Disappear and the like.
@silvertear1 I think their lyrics will get better without Mike Portnoy though... also believe their music will be more passionate instead of lame metal now that JP is in control and John Myung and Labrie will contribute alot more. But I agree, the last 3 DT albums vs last 3 SW albums... SW wins
@UnchainTheWolv3s You're right about that, but those songs usually end up being better than let's see... Honor thy father or never enough (MP : Guys, lets sound like muse). I know he has created masterpieces, wich i love, but I got the feeling that he dragged the band into a more "lame" and less proggy direction. He made up a songwriting rule, wich made JM (the best songwriter imo) to stand back and just be a passive bassist, so im really looking forward to the new DT.
@mortenhen Yeah I thought the same thing when I heard Portnoy left. He ruined everything with his backing vocals and obsession with Metallica or Avenged Sevenfold
@UrizenNihilation Think the last album was pretty good, though I see it's not everyones cup of tea. But the lyrics aint that bad, compared to some of MPs. His solo albums was composed by Matt Guillory and himself, wich aint close to Petrucci and Rudess, so i think the next album can be pretty good.
This is some great art right here. Like someone before me said it's a bit cheesy at times, but overall the entire Mercy Falls album is one hell of a piece of music.
These guys are from Stockholm, Sweden. I met them at ProgPower/Atlanta 2 weeks ago. They are totally Dream Theater. If you get the chance, you gotta see these guys LIVE!
@kevingthompson13 i agree. they are so much like dream theater. they even to a point, remind me of kamelot (by how smooth tommy sings) its a really great band to see live. =D
@Stroumbo33 Are you familiar with Vanden Plas? January Sun is pretty good by them. Also Illusion Suite, try some of their stuff. Tuomas/Nightwish listens to Vanden Plas. I actually get to meet most of these people in dining room/backstage at ProgPower. Every year I find new people that I never heard of that I discover to be really good.
@kevingthompson13 Vanden Plas is absolutely amazing. My favorite band. Good songs would be Can You Hear Me, Fireroses Dance (my personal favorite song in the world), and their new stuff like Quicksilver and On My Way To Jerusalem are just unbelievable.
holy crap! where did this band come from!? never heard something so solid. its a little cheesy at times but its still legit. its nice to see more and more good prog in this generation of country music and gaga BS.
this is awesome. i cannot explain how much these guys sound like circus maximus. if u don't already know them i highly recommend checking out songs like biosfear or sane no more.
I am truly speechless!!!! I have been looking for a heavy/talented/progressive/unique band with good vocals for the longest fucking time!!!!! !@#$%^&* this may be one of my favorite bands already i love everything about them.
@korruption Of course, another freaking awesome band from Sweden. Thatäs where the action is at, man! Jag älskar Svenska METAL!!! Alltid det bästa. :)
@korruption Also Calgary my buddy is on this album and i think a few more of the band players are from Calgary, because I know Tommy is here all the time.
@microsoup Seventh Wonder is a VERY Dream Theater type band from Stockholm, Sweden. I met these guys last Sept at ProgPowerUSA and they were VERY GOOD! Too many folks have forgotten Dream Theater, its really good to have that sound back!
The music's pretty good, but Karevik's voice really takes the band to another level. Anyhow, Mercy Falls was quite an upgrade from Waiting in the Wings, so I'm looking forward to see them improve even further in the future.
Que? i didnt notice anything out of the ordinary with that. You gotta remember though: Their Recording studio is independent, they probably got it as best as they can. and it sounds good to me.
@wolfenbreed Take a look at SW in-studio videos. They do absolutely no pitch correction for Tommy's voice, it's amazing. He's the best studio singer I've ever seen.
Dream Theater sucks now not because of Labrie, but because of the direction they took after Moore. Just my opinion, can't stand Rudess, just technical playing without emotion, awful.
@JesusSaves I wouldn't say Rudess lacks emotion so much as he doesn't know when to hold back and play what's best for the music. When Sherinian was keyboardist, he knew how to add atmosphere and fill in the song instead of just wailing on top of it. Rudess is a good keyboardist, but he sees himself as a lead keyboardist. (I agree Moore was a great asset. His lyrics, especially.)
Anyway, I just heard about Seventh Wonder. They sound friggin' sweet. Gonna check them out tomorrow. :D
Can't agree with you more!! It's one thing to be a brilliant techical musician it's quite another to write a truly "good" song not just a 25 or 45 minute jam to say "hey, look at us we can jam, but our writing skills are extremely lacking!"
@silvertear1 How could you possibly say that this guy's aren't good musicians... I assume then you are a great musician yourself and can easily play there stuff.
I still maintain DT are not good song writers but are rather good instrumentalists. There's no need for someone to know all words of the dictionary to write a love letter but only the right tone and wordings,DT lack this.SW has it,this song is a well written song.
@silvertear1 DT are outstanding wongwriters, nobody would listen to them otherwise. Learning to Live, Pull me Under, Voices, Scarred, Disappear, etc etc.
Beatles , except very few songs, were always terrible band. I ruptured my vocal chords and so I stopped singing because such injury totally changes complexion of the voice. Just because he was good on IAW does not mean that he must annoy so many like me with his squeaky voice. That's all. He could sing before, I agree, but he can't sing now. And that's what counts. Beatles - mushroom induced bullshit music. And I don't care if I am only one saying it - it's true.
what you say about the beatles is so fuckin true...
anyway about labrie, although now he's not even the shadow of what he used to be back in the early 90s I still like his voice and even to some degree his performance, far better than those powermetal vocals so common in prog metal nowadays.
I am personally very picky about vocalists. I used to love LaBrie's voice on IAW. But on very next album, he started to sing in for him unnnatural way, and I really started to dislike him piece by piece (or song by song). He just doesn't do it for me anymore. But if you like him, I am good with that. It's just up to personal taste, no grudge there. Peace...
I agree. On the live at the Marquee recordings he sounds phenomenal. Then something went horribly wrong. He sounded better on their BC&SL tour though, much better.
@kamikaze90watermelon yeah he did, i really think he was singing pretty awesome, but i have to agree with many people, sometimes it can be quite annoying

holy crap! where did this band come from!? never heard something so solid. its a little cheesy at times but its still legit. its nice to see more and more good prog in this generation of country music and gaga BS.
schplonkerdoogen 1 year ago
@schplonkerdoogen They've been around for 10 years, though only had major releases like this one since 06. They came from Stockholm.

this is awesome. i cannot explain how much these guys sound like circus maximus. if u don't already know them i highly recommend checking out songs like biosfear or sane no more.
plap111 1 year ago
@plap111 I've listened to CM, they have a similar genre, but they sound different. Plus I believe CM and SW consider eachother "sibling bands"

@amibilos aethra -the mountain behind the sky, opera manga-tierras de tormento , warcry-reflejos de sangre ,mago de oz-el que quiera entender que entienda ,rata blanca-la leyenda del mago y la ada... no te gustan?no son buenos en tu opinion?pensaba q estas bandas pegavan mucho en mexico.
XxazidxX 1 year ago

@microsoup Seventh Wonder is a VERY Dream Theater type band from Stockholm, Sweden. I met these guys last Sept at ProgPowerUSA and they were VERY GOOD! Too many folks have forgotten Dream Theater, its really good to have that sound back!

The music's pretty good, but Karevik's voice really takes the band to another level. Anyhow, Mercy Falls was quite an upgrade from Waiting in the Wings, so I'm looking forward to see them improve even further in the future.

Good song but the analog bending of Tommy's vocals at 1:04 is completely unacceptable.
wolfenbreed 2 years ago
Que? i didnt notice anything out of the ordinary with that. You gotta remember though: Their Recording studio is independent, they probably got it as best as they can. and it sounds good to me.
yishto 2 years ago 2
@yishto
Oh it sounds great and he is a great singer, but at 1:04 there seems to be an unnatural digital bend of his voice.
wolfenbreed 2 years ago
I didnt notice anything significantly out of place.
yishto 2 years ago 4
@wolfenbreed
Hmmm. Sounded natural to me, but who knows?
doghousepiiman 2 years ago 9
yeahh!!! me neither!!! I found this song very good!!!! is great melodic metal band!!!
Pablo18z 1 year ago
@wolfenbreed STFU...you're not the one that wrote the song...they'll have it how ever they want....
Immolate666 2 years ago 3
there's nothing misterious at 1:04, its just an eco effect, that doesn't change anything.
HDVideosOnly 2 years ago 2
@wolfenbreed its just in ur imagination. Im a musician and it sounds completely natural to me
Tompa8989 1 year ago
@wolfenbreed Take a look at SW in-studio videos. They do absolutely no pitch correction for Tommy's voice, it's amazing. He's the best studio singer I've ever seen.

Heard about this band from a gas station clerk.
Fuckin awesome!

Wykydtron88 2 years ago 2
Dream Theater sucks now not because of Labrie, but because of the direction they took after Moore. Just my opinion, can't stand Rudess, just technical playing without emotion, awful.
JesusSaves 2 years ago
@JesusSaves youre right, Dream post Moore is not as good
catalatregua 2 years ago 4
@catalatregua It isn't, but Jordan Rudess is way better!
fernando103s 1 year ago
@JesusSaves I wouldn't say Rudess lacks emotion so much as he doesn't know when to hold back and play what's best for the music. When Sherinian was keyboardist, he knew how to add atmosphere and fill in the song instead of just wailing on top of it. Rudess is a good keyboardist, but he sees himself as a lead keyboardist. (I agree Moore was a great asset. His lyrics, especially.)
Anyway, I just heard about Seventh Wonder. They sound friggin' sweet. Gonna check them out tomorrow. :D

DT= excellent/first among equals instrumentalists but bad song writers/musicians
silvertear1 2 years ago
Can't agree with you more!! It's one thing to be a brilliant techical musician it's quite another to write a truly "good" song not just a 25 or 45 minute jam to say "hey, look at us we can jam, but our writing skills are extremely lacking!"
JesusSaves 2 years ago
@silvertear1 How could you possibly say that this guy's aren't good musicians... I assume then you are a great musician yourself and can easily play there stuff.
yogimetal 1 year ago
@yogimetal
I still maintain DT are not good song writers but are rather good instrumentalists. There's no need for someone to know all words of the dictionary to write a love letter but only the right tone and wordings,DT lack this.SW has it,this song is a well written song.
silvertear1 1 year ago
@silvertear1 DT are outstanding wongwriters, nobody would listen to them otherwise. Learning to Live, Pull me Under, Voices, Scarred, Disappear, etc etc.

Fucking Amazing band
anguspetrucci 2 years ago
Beatles , except very few songs, were always terrible band. I ruptured my vocal chords and so I stopped singing because such injury totally changes complexion of the voice. Just because he was good on IAW does not mean that he must annoy so many like me with his squeaky voice. That's all. He could sing before, I agree, but he can't sing now. And that's what counts. Beatles - mushroom induced bullshit music. And I don't care if I am only one saying it - it's true.
micanut48 2 years ago 4
what you say about the beatles is so fuckin true...
anyway about labrie, although now he's not even the shadow of what he used to be back in the early 90s I still like his voice and even to some degree his performance, far better than those powermetal vocals so common in prog metal nowadays.
alpiel91 2 years ago
I am personally very picky about vocalists. I used to love LaBrie's voice on IAW. But on very next album, he started to sing in for him unnnatural way, and I really started to dislike him piece by piece (or song by song). He just doesn't do it for me anymore. But if you like him, I am good with that. It's just up to personal taste, no grudge there. Peace...
micanut48 2 years ago
I agree. On the live at the Marquee recordings he sounds phenomenal. Then something went horribly wrong. He sounded better on their BC&SL tour though, much better.
