There was a low-budget horror movie in the 1980s - "The Lady in White", maybe - that used Bing Crosby's version of this song repeatedly. The plot was that the murderer had liked this song and had played it a lot, or something like that. The song was the best part of the film. When it ended, I was compelled to sing: "Did you ever see a cheesy movie? / Well, I did."
I used to think that I was the only one who collected old sheet music; photos etc from the 1920s and 1930s. Also great to see that someone else still listens to records on a victrola. Love it! Thanks!
Great tune and Les Allen does great vocals on this one. From my diskography I see this one was recorded on 12 December 1933. Great stuff, thanks for posting.
He believe your right of course. My late mother had an extension speaker in the kitchen of our London home. it was her highlight of the day! To give the BBC their due, they certainly broadcast a great deal of high quality light and popular music of the period.
I think you will find that what he said was ' Good evening everybody this is Henry Hall speaking' with heavy emphasis on 'this is' - but I can't remember why!
Yes, he did stress that and if you recall, he also said "This is H....enry H....all speaking" drawing out both of the aitches. A really good band as were most of them, if they were not they would not have been contracted. Unlike today when I can't tell the difference between one screeching mob and an other.
I uploaded this but its the Jack Payne version i have loved since being a kid, when i had the 78 and it got broken. This is good but its always the Payne one for me!!
My Grandad played trombone for Henry Hall and the BBC dance orchestra. His name was Allen Massey. My Mum still has (I hope!) his reference letter signed by HH from when he moved to another orchestra.
Even though I was a teen in the 1980's and pogo-ed to New Wave music, I always loved listening to crooning types songs and old ballads. Thanks for posting :)
Been meaning to reply for ages, how interesting, what was his name and did he play with any other bands? There are various other Henry Hall 78s on here from this period, and also news reel clips that may have him on!
I bet that is GREAT!I love him my favourite being his version of "shadow waltz"-beautiful.One of the top Crosby experts an irish man lives just around the corner from me!
@mic33george I first heard this song in a "Popeye" cartoon. Olive Oyl is sleep-walking way up high in a construction site while this song plays in the background. I remember my late mother telling me the name of the song, as well as her liking that they'd use it for background music for "Olive."
I'm 16 and all my friends think I'm crazy for listening to this kind of music but I absolutely love Henry Hall<3
