There it is......you can see that now this your going to need to put into a fire....LIKE SERIOUSLY YOUR HAND IS LIKE TOUCHING THE FIRE AND YOUR LIKE YEAH SO HOW WAS YOUR WEEKEND!!!
Does the type of string you use matter? Also, what tension do you have on the string? I have attempted this method and I found it difficult to get the string tension right.. If I had it too tight, I could not spin the wood, and if I had it too loose, the string would move around the wood without spinning it... I have a feeling it may have just been the crappy string I was using?
@Balgore8 this video doesnt explain a thing *lol* you need a softer wood for your bow because when you wrap the string around the drill the bow should self tension the string around the drill.
I usually leave a little slack on my string though so when its not wrapped around the drill there isnt tension on the bow.
I made mine with a shoelace and cedar i found in the woods and man its hard work to get it going but i cheat a little and use lint from the dryer..
@warnher I think I finally have a good set up now, good string, good bow, and good spindle/base.... But when I spin my drill/spindle... it slides out from under the rock I hold it with... And if I put more pressure on the rock, it wont spin (the string will spin around it). I think I need a better concave rock/wood to hold it with... It is hard work lol.
I dont write comments very much, but i have to here!. #1 he made a big deal about transferring an ember verses putting the hearth board on top of the coal extender. If you place your hearhboard on the coal extender the coal dust you create takes longer to pile up because it falls into the material instead of building up. NEVER place your coal extender on the ground IT SOAKS UP MOISTURE. Thinner hearhtboard = less bow time and faster coal ignition. Just from my experience, which is a lot.
First time watching Expert Village and never again! Should just make one full length instead of many short ones (some not even in order). You Tube needs a "Report this video as garbage" option to get rid of all the trash.
I've had a lot of success with two little tricks. One is adding a few grains of sand to the fireboard in the drill hole. And the second is actually creating a reverse wrap twisted string, out of shoe lace or 550 cord. The twists create a better grip on the spindle. Thanks for the vid!
Nice bow drill form. The fireboard and spindle look like northern white cedar, and the tinder bundle appears to be white cedar and canary reed grass, what other woods do you use in your area?
@Shaowolf247 i had the same problem, this is what you do, let the dust build up in the notch, make sure it keeps its form. Then let off some pressure and add speed, what this does is turn the dust into a coal. After realizing this i was able to make a coal
@Shaowolf247 also, make sure the notch isnt to narrow or wide, too wde it doesnt build a good pile and too narrow the coal will stick to the notch. You want the bottom side of the notch to be a bit wider than the top, and the slope to be almost vertical with a slight outward angle. Try this im no expert but these are things i discovered after trying a million times lol
Because you're a dumbass. If you don't have a lighter or matches on you, and you're in an emergency or lost in the woods, this is a good way to start a fire. Lighters don't grow in the wild, and not everybody has a lighter on them 24/7.
@magnusalexa Yes, only a fool wouldn't take a lighter into the bush, but you should always have a backup fire starting method. Granted, there are better backup methods, magnesium sticks being a great example. However, the bow drill is a good skill for any backpacker to master. Plus, it's super cool. It's entertaining and interesting. I bet there are things you do in your life that are pointless beyond their entertainment value, but learning the bow drill wouldn't be one of them.
this is fake! Not only the bodgy handling hints to his inability, at 1:20 there is no ember.. suddenly at 1:22 the big fat ember sits right in the kindle; busted faker :-/
Anyway watching some other 'survival' vids of this clown make it obvious he doesn't know the first thing of what he's doing. BAH
@masterdurchgriff and your about as bright as a 2 watt light bulb in a snow storm i've done this and what your seeing is not a fake it will suddenly start smokeing next time asshole get your facts straight DUMBSHIT!
Hey mister arrogance, I did not say that making fire with a bow drill doesnt work, I said that it looks like this is fake because the vid is clearly editted at the crucial moment between working the drill and having the actual ember in his tinder. I say 'think' cause I wasn't there so theres no way I can actualy know with certainty but neither were you. btw gratious insults like that must make you feel like a real man huh? lol
fyi I am dutch and also speak and write perfectly french, so pardon me if I do make some spelling mistakes in English. I guess you are way more inteligent than me!
it's called the clove-hitch. i went to a wilderness program not too long ago and we had to bow drill... i busted a six-second ember. i earned a pound of skittles!!!!
you should have been using more of the string on the bow you were constricting the movment of the bow to the centre of the string if you had used longer stroked you would have got a coal much faster
make sure the end of the drill that u put in the big peice of wood is not pointed but more flat(it causes more friction than a point), and make sure the string is tight enough but not to tight, and that it is not slipping and not even moving the drill, and the big peice of wood at the bottom must be dry or else it wont work as well, iver gotten smoke with green wood but never an ember.and make sure to use long strokes
@jozefdkois I read your comment about bow drill in a spruce forest. If you can get a hold of dead standing cedar or balsam fir you should have better results. Spruce is difficult as it retains moisture for a long time, even after a dried set gets a coal, it can soak up the humidity in the air.
did he say Glicerin? Also known as TNT am I right? Yeah because when we are lost in the woods we have spare glicerin in our back pocket!!

Hi irmollaar . I was trying this method in a spruce forest. But I was getting some brown dust and a lot of smoke instead of black coal.
Was that because the fire board or the spindle were not dry enough? Thanks
