I currently live in Hilton Head, SC, less than an hour drive from the US17 bridge, and have enjoyed Savannah every time I've been there. My favorite place is the riverfront. Of course, HHI is a great place to live, and where I'm located, Parris Island is right across the water from my house. Charleston is about 2 1/2 hr drive north on 17. Savannah is the northern end of the "Coastal Empire," and HHI is on the southern end of the "Lowcountry." There is no "class" like Southern Class."
This book is why I want to go to Savannah. Not for the scandals he describes but for the culture and beauty he describes. The Savannah described is a truly unique city, no matter what you are looking for. And no part is something to be embarrassed of. Just another, more colorful part of your own history, one that is often overlooked or outright ignored. But always interesting and worth a second look.
@theirishrn Loved the movie ... went to visit Savannah ... If you make the trip to Savannah, you should also do some background and visit Charleston SC ... I believe Charleston has much more to offer ... a beautiful city with many plantations open in the area to visit ... Charleston has been used in many movies and TV series. There really is a lot of beauty in America to see.
The most sickening part of the film, for me, was the scene where the Author (portrayed as a Hetero Greaseball) hears the Attorney's strategy for defending the Gay Antique Dealer. Apparently sick of "the Queers and their lies", he has to go off and "find the love of a good woman" to take the Queer stink off him, I suppose. Why do Gay people support movies about them which are so obviously hostile to them?
@megaswenson it's apparently obvious that you suppose...some sort of homophobic agenda. does this prejudice extend to your appreciation of other films, or just Eastwood's? as to your question, i would guess that some gay people support movies that you consider hostile, while others don't.
@floatshake I don't suppose an 'Agenda'. But it does seem to me that Eastwood (and perhaps others) sees the "proper place" for Gays as Little Maricones. So the Drag Queen is admirable (because she stays 'in her place'), while the Antiques Dealer is demonic, because he dares to identify as Gay, but dares to function outside the Gay Ghetto. Actually, I grew up in the Hollywood Hills, and my parents and their friends routinely pointed out that brand of Homophobia in a number of film people.
@floatshake Actually, there are quite a few people who have noted the anti-homosexual bias in movies that Gay people watched, back then. If I'm remembering correctly, The Celluloid Closet contains an interview with a Lesbian, mocking her friends for loving a movie about Gay Vampires, quoting them: "Well, at least it had Gay characters!" The fact that portrayals of Gays always had to be horrendously negative or demeaning was overlooked by Gays, who were grateful to see any portrayal AT ALL.
Savannah may not disappoint. But that homophobic monstrosity of a movie certainly did. The book was mildly pro-gay: but the movie basically says that if you're Gay, you're guilty. We SAW the White Trash Hustler being killed IN SELF-DEFENSE. Nonetheless, we have to see a ghost (apparently all-knowing) saying the Antique Dealer was guilty. Eastwood, apparently, is one more hustler who hates Gays, but who has leeched off them, for his whole career.
I just returned from a week in Savannah....I had such a great time! It is mysterious and incredibly beautiful....I will return to live there someday! xxooxxoo
Still giving the best private Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil Book tours in Savannah with a trip to Bonaventure included. We also see Danny's grave! Check out my site savannahcartours
My sister goes to Scad (the Savannah College of Art and Design, where I want to go), we live near Savannah. It's as beautiful as it is in the movie. :)
If you have never been to Savannah. GO. It's an amazing place. I'm a native Floridian and we spend alot of weekends there. He's right ,Savannah doesn't disappoint. No proper southern lady ever would.
Savannah is my favorite city and it is not boring at all. I've never seen a city that loves to party on Halloween more than Savannah. St. Patrick's Day is also fun. You definitely need to do at least one of the trolley tours or walking tours. Also go to Club One.
I am planning to visit Savanna this May just because of this beautifully written book of John Berendt.. The first place I will visit probably going to be Banaventure Cemetery. I will sit on the bench shape of Aiken's gravestone and watch the ships go by.
It takes more than a few hours to really explore Savannah. You have to spend a day on River Street, walk around the historic district and take at least one of the tours.
His accent is genuine. In the film, Kevin Spacey does a good job as does the actor playing Joe Odem, although they may be a tad overdone. I am from a small town south of Atlanta, and I have my accent when I drink or when I talk to others who have it. I was educated in Atlanta and much of my dialect fell away there - the more homogenized we become as a culture the less distinct our accents become- shame. But the accents are still to be heard - especially in the older generations.
Yes. It's similar to the accents of genteel people Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama of an older generation. Few baby boomers have the accent where they drop their "r"s.
He is right!!! I got to visit Savannah, probably one of the most beautiful cities you will ever see, soooo much charm. Got to tour the Mercer Williams home where the murder happened. Fascinating book and story.
i have 2 unopened copies of the audiobook cd's if anyones interested. they were bought for 14.99 plus tax but I'll sell you them for 5 bucks a piece. Anyone interested, email me.
It's one of my favorite accents but I was never able to pin it down as to where it came from. The writer, Shelby Foote had that sort of accent, although he hailed originally from Mississippi. He could have read the phone book and it would have sounded good.
I grew up in St. Augustine and my family traveled quite often to Savannah when I was growing up. It's like a second home to me. Yall DO talk like that! Don't be offended Please! That's exactly why I love being there. That accent is absolute music!!
By chance on the way to Jekyll Island wedetoured to Savannah, GA. It was the best detour we ever made in the US. As an Englishman, we are all classed by our accents. I never listened to the accents in Savannah -- it was the warmth of their smiles that seduced us.
testing1sim, but I hope to answer your question about the 1st man's accent. He sounds like he is from Savannah.
We were there in Aug., & he sounds like he has the dialect of the people who have lived there forever. I could be wrong- it's just a guess, & hope that this will help. Peace...
lol good question. no one in georgia talks like this. i've lived here my entire life and never met anyone with an accent like that. it's like something straight out of gone with the wind
Savannah is so pretty. i been there last week the first time. if you like history and old architecture then you will love it. also great southern food.
It's not the War between the States in the south either. They call it, The War of Northern Aggresion.
