Same thing with Ozzy when he was with Randy Rhoads! Come on silly music industry corporate people with your formulas and control of what YOU think people want to hear! Stop cashing in on PC losers that you teach how to dance, dress, perform, and get others to write songs for. The real show is within the true artist and their ability to create their own Persona!!!!!! Thats the real talent in this world!!
I just cannot understand how there is all this great live footage of great bands like The Who, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Beatles, etc and no one thought to follow Van Halen during their prime and get some really great professional footage of their live performances. Seriously glad that there are these fan vids around but WTF?!!!!!!! It's really a big loss!!! Same with Soundgarden! Where the fuck was everyone and their cameras?!!!
@herc122 I think they had people film and record them and they have all of the footage in a vault. Thats what Eddie says. Look at the Police. Same era. Not alot of professional footage.
@darlamilf47 - and god bless ya for it, Darla. Nice channel by the way, reminds me of a smoking girl I met at a David Lee Roth show. Wanted me to light her cigarette. The way she looked at me as she took a long, slow drag....damn
TY so much for posting these 5150! I was way to young to make it to these early tours so it's great to be able to go back in time and see it through your camera's eye! :-) This rocks out!
@eugvh18 "Metal"??? No... not really... more like hard rock or -- like they used to refer to their own stuff, BIG ROCK. Just kidding, it's just that VH is too much of a sleazy party band to be called metal IMHO
Great post, One of my favorites. I had the cassette from a friend in 1980 at the ripe age of 10. If I was just few years older I would have loved to have seen them. I eventually saw all the line ups but this must have been great seeing this live. I am so grateful for the audio and the video! Thanks!
I saw them when i was 15 years old in Wichita Falls, TX. First concert ever. Auditorium was great. 2000 seats. Thats right! 2000. There is no bad seat in this Auditorium since it is a smaller city. It was a GREAT concert!!!! Surreal!. I was so stupid did not know what an encore was so we left after it was over. Probably missed 3 songs.
Ed revolutionized guitar when everything was getting stagnant as possible, yea there were greats b4 him but the truth is NONE were as good and none now or to come will be able to jumpstart the axe like he did in the 70s ! VH will always be # 1...
I got hunch every pretty girl in Southern California "felt the love" from David Lee Roth in the late 70's........LOL.......that crazy dude banged so much fine pussy back in the day.......makes your head spin.
its the Snake guitar. You can see eddie play the Ibanez destroyer in the You really Got me Video and the live version of You Really Got Me from the 1978 eruption video
Sounds great on in the studio, however, kids, this is what live rock is about. Heck most dont remember the concert anyways, they were to high to remember.
@emittscool I'm sure some do. But, no, it's not like it used to be back in the day. You'd have to have been there to really understand the difference or comparison.
@cvjucla3 lol still happens dude, see a ton of concerts on the Palladia channel where chicks (and dudes) are on peoples shoulders. I'd say if anything...groupies are kinda dying off a little bit at a time.
@cvjucla3 girls on your shoulders back then?...... Girls you just met used to go up in the nosebleed area of the "partially obscured" section and drop their panties for ya at those early VH concerts brother.
@cvjucla3 and if you were a bit lucky they had on their halter tops that would somehow get untied..lol halter tops and tight jeans -shorts those were the dayz ..when babes were babes..
Wasn't 80s / 90s hair bands a poor imitation of Van Halen ? Some songs that 80s 90s hair bands had their moment but reality is most of the groups were cheap knock offs of Van Halen "the Roth era".
This is when Halen was Halen. If they could have continued with this kind of music, they could of made all those 80's/90's "Hair Bands" look like what they were, "A poor imitation of REAL Rock N Roll"!
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, Edward Van Halen is Van Halen. I mean, he DID write all the songs as well as um... play them. Play them with a style that changed the face of rock guitar FOREVER! I do, however, would agree that David Lee is indeed the REAL singer of the MIGHTY VAN HALEN!
Yes, Eddie wrote EVERY SONG. David Lee wrote the lyrics. But, Ed is the man that came up with the music for those DLR lyrics. This is a fact man. Come on. The ONLY song that Eddie didn't write were the cover tunes. And, there is also "Respect the wind" that Eddie and Alex wrote together. Alex actually wrote (and I believe PLAYED the keyboards on!) this song which is on the "Twister" soundtrack. Ed played the guitar. Al on keyboard. Weird but true ( I think)
actually, ed played keyboard, and lead guitar, while alex played rhythm. If you remember, ed started off on drums, and alex on guitar....just think of what they would have been if it had stayed the way.
definally not the same band.
and on a side note, david lee roth is the true singer of van halen, sammy hagar can eat me.
KILLER!!! I wonder if the recording is slowed down because of age or if they are actually tuned a full step down..probably just old but Im sure there are other live tracks from this..Ill have to check now that Im curious
Ted Nugent and Black Sabbath got really pissed at Van Halen in the 70's because VH kept upstaging them as the upstart opening act on their tours. When you watch these videos, you can clearly see why...Van Halen was like a ferocious nuclear bomb exploding onstage...pure unbridled rock fury at it's finest. I would have dreaded having to follow Van Halen's set back in the day....talk about a huge letdown for the audience...kinda like a girl shitting in the bed right after the best sex you ever had!
Yeah there is a Henry Rollins spoken word video where he says he went to go see The Nuge in '78 and Van Halen blew him away and The Nuge sucked lol. And who cares if someone crapped in the bed? Just change the sheets! Maybe I'm just weird lol.
god damnit i would give anything to have been alive in 78-79 and be able to go to VH back in the good ol days. Im 19 and saw them in Milwaukee last month, kicked ass, but to see them back in the day would have been so badass
I saw them in both '78 and '79 ... back then, it was unreal because we'd never heard anything like what Eddie was doing up to then. First time was at Day on the Green in Oakland - second time with Black Sabbath at Oakland Coliseum Arena.
They were the best ever....the very first time I heard Van Halen I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I would say how does he do that? Eddie is with out a doubt the best ever.
Sweet footage....VERY RARE TOO! I hope VH plays this underappreciated tune on the fall tour! The last time I saw it live was in '98 with a no-talent fairy in a black suit butchering the song....only Diamond Dave has a right to sing this beauty in concert!!!!
I am so surprised they don't put out stuff from this era officialy. None of em need the money but it would sell BIG TIME. I saw em blow sabbath away in 78- first tour- Manchester. Then headline in 79 and 80. The best live band ever? (post zeppelin.) I think so. Seen em all from back then- DC, Rainbow, Scorps, Priest, Motorhead, Whitesnake, Lizzy... the list goes on. But in terms of a show, nothing came close to classic VH. Just a shame they've wasted the last 20 years bickering. Shame.
Wow, You've seen 'em all. I've been to a number of shows over thirty years, but always felt Van Halen was the supreme arena showband of my generation. Saw them live back in just about '79. And just earlier this month in Portland. It was 'effen awesome to hear them kick out those old jams from back then. You must find a way to see them. They are ON FIRE this tour., but not playing this song :(
This song is and always has been an absolute bitch for them to do live.
