Too many people are unfairly harsh on the Aunt, people cant understand the sheer level of hunger and fear that these people endured. She had a cold hard choice between ensuring her own children had food and whether she could care for the children of her brother too.

what seita could do was helping them farm or whatever he could do. protecting setsuko isnt a good excuse for not doing anything productive. that way he could have stayed with his aunt. seita's too much pride and not surrendering represents the attitude japan kept at this time. he ended up in a misery anyway. almost eveyone realised it was stupid of japan sacrificing the innocent for its stupid pride. my grandma did too, looking back. this kinda shit should never be repeated again.

The Aunt already said she won't give them any food. What's the point of them going back if she's not going to feed them? We don't even know if she'd give them shelter.

To say the least, the Aunt is the most realistic one though. She did what she had to do for her kids, the way she talked to Seita though was mean. Which she acknowledge but did anyway.
