  • Wonder what Elvin really made of Sunny..You can see his love of Art..

  • love Elvin's use of space. That groove he stumbled upon at the end is neat and quite subtle but definitely there!

  • they are so coked off their heads, love elvins bit though, and his face at 2:32 but what ever sonny did before or after this, this actual performance was just TOO out there

  • this is for you ass wipes who do not understand, spirit, soul and arkestry... THIS IS DRUMMING AT ITS FINEST!!!!

  • Elvin wiped Arts dust away..

  • @datura1234 as a matter of fact, im doing a study on jazz drumming history, and guess what - these are one of the first guys who started to improvise more and play more freely, the guys who introduced polyrhythms into drumming, and by the sound of it, they were doing it right in this video, pure improvisation, no boundaries, measures, or anything, pure art. so if you dont see whats the deal with these guys, maybe you first need to evolve yourself to understand what theyre doing,

  • @datura1234 or if you dont want to spend time on that, go listen to your travis barker, jordison, ulrich or whatever, and leave musicality to people who actually have ears :)

  • Hahahaha I'm sure he could keep time.... if he wanted too :P

  • nice..Elvin JOnes and Sunnay Murray are two of my favorite drummers. Not to mention what an icon Blakey is in the jazz world. This is as soulfull, techincal, and as beatiful as drumming can get.

  • great clip. any idea where it was filmed?

  • Are you sure that's not Jack DeJohnette? It looks just like him...

  • It's not Jack.

  • I have to start by saying that, as a huge Elvin Jones fan, I'm totally biased. His playing is so much more melidic that anything I hear Sunny Murray doing here (or even Art Blakey). I like Art Blakey quite a bit though - still, Elvin is the man. I have to add that this sort of "drum off" doessn't seem to suit any of these players or their styles. The first time I saw it I was pretty surprised. I'd be interested to see the full clip.

  • yow!!!

  • i am a metal/rock drummer, but god, i cant help but love the emotion, the soul, they put into their drumming. its amazing

  • crap

  • great stuff.. Elvin and Bu were contemporaries, Murray's playing here to me sounds not unlike Jack DeJohnette.

  • great point! You are right on the money, I guess to me it looked like Sunny was out of place up there with all the thumpa thumpa thump thump. Regardless, they all have amazing disctinctive sounds, no doubt.

  • This leaves me speechless....and I love all of these guys. Blakey is my favorite on this short clip, but Elvin is my man for life. Sonny Murray's kind of left in the dust huh?

  • Not really. Blakey and Jones play in a very different style than Murray, they are more bop-centric and Murray plays in the cellular style with artists like Cecil Taylor and Albert Ayler...it's like comparing apples to oranges. Blakey would have been the wrong drummer for Cecil, just as Sunny would be the wrong drummer for Coltrane before 1965. Rashied Ali was the perfect drummer for Coltrane from 66-67...Sunny plays with a style that's more akin to Ali than Jones.
