@cheesecheesecheesey Isn't that amazing? OK we can handle the staccato strings, up, up, transitioning up, then finally finish the phrase to get to that A or F# diminished? Does it matter? (Actually it does, W. resolves the chord downward, it's A,) But panic and mayhem, incest and violence, Notung at the ready and we hit that chord for... Nine beats, and pop the final G chord on beat TWO (in4-4.) Muti's reminder cue is clear, and his execution is dramatic, a wonderful flair and totally effective!
@bassfeile I have to agree. I certainly stand in awe of Domingo's voice and work, but personally have just never cared for him in Wagner at all. "Siegmund" is Peter Hofmann...
Er...I've nothing against Domingo's voice, but tdp10gh's right. I'd add ENO's Alberto Remedios to that list, as well.
Add to that that Domingo's German is, shall we say, unidiomatic. . .and what we get is certainly *not* the best Siegmund ever. He is merely good. But a good Siegmund is hard to find. . .so, thanks!
These two make an unlikely but remarkable team. Fabulous singing, and equally important, fabulous and passionate acting. So dramatic the way the slide their palms over Notung, as if to join in league with the sword.

No Im afraid he's not. The best Sigmund ever would be Ramon Vinay, or Lauritz Melchior or Ludwig Suthaus or Jon Vickers or Gunter Treptow or even James King or Wolfgang Windgassen. You need to listen more.
Thats a fair call Lorenz was utterly wonderful as siefried and siemund. I think Vinay has all the power burnished tone, volume and heft. have you heard Ludwig Suthaus on teh Furtwangler. He's good too.
Even in 1994 it was very hard to take Domingo as the boy Sigmeund. lol But the singing is definitely jaw-dropping! Who was the Siegline? Looked like Meier to me, the singing was equally lustrous in that short moment.
Lucky, lucky you, kamikazekate, Domingo is the best Siegmund I have ever seen...I just saw him last year again as Siegmund and he is mesmerizing. I want to know what vitamins he is taking!
Have you any more from this broadcast? I am going to see placido in die walkure in May in Barcelona!!! I cant wait! I know its fourteen years on from this performance but still WOW he is fantastic! I cant wait

This is true. And his voice suits more for Verdi roles not for Wagner, he`s voice is not enough heroic.

On May 28th 2008 Domingo sang wonderful Siegmund in Barcelona, with fantastic Waltraud Meier as Sieglinde. Bravo Maestro!
