I don't usually find brass too interesting but this is so moving, it's a pleasure to change my mind. It's a sublime piece; and like the very best art, it's direct to the heart. All British history and honour reflects like through a prism from WWs I & II. It reverberates through every note. What might have been sombre, is inspiring. Their Finest Hour.

I visited the WW1-frontline from Newport to Pfefferhouse (Switserland). I can assure anyone that what you see and learn humbles you. @DCneger - thank you very much, what a nice thing to say. We've lost our way a bit at the moment, but despite the best efforts of our inept politicians and avaricious, amoral bankers we'll bounce back and start to look after our country :)
I am a Yank and British by heritage. No wonder my favorite composers are Holst, Elgar, Ireland and Vaughn Williams. Also there is nothing like a military band to stir the blood or rend the tears. In this setting you Brits show that you maybe above all else know dignity. And you gotta love those uniforms!
@seelark Well see this video on youtube and understand that we appreciate our American cousins across the sea too. Type 911 Buckingham Palace into You tube. Equally as emotive, God save the Queen and God bless America!
This normally moves you most at a funeral.. for some reason this occassion brought out an amazingly touching rendition... I remember it very well tears flow......
Beautifully done! Thank you for posting this. I'm glad to see that you Brits know how to honor those who gave their all. What do we do here in the US on Memorial Day and Veteran's Day? We have a 24-hour sale at Wal-Mart. How sad!
Yet another British excercise in excellency. The Britts have well understood that our freedom lies over the pain and ashes of millions of fallen young men and their heartbroken families. Lest We Forget.
@clustergarde the "lies" you speak of aren't the type of a physical position, more the type of untrue words, unfortunately. Lest We Forget the bullshit the powers that be foist on us over the dead bodies of our sons. VERY rarely is it about defending the actual sovereignty of this nation and our physical borders, as it SHOULD be, and ONLY should be.
This my favourite bit of Rememberance Day. Everytime I sit down and watch/listen to this it makes me cry as I remember those who have given their lives for our little island over the years! May they live in everlasting peace in Heaven where they belong!
I love this, no one quite does pomp like us British, the music is very touching, a salute to our very brave soldiers past and present, whatever people think of wars no one can doubt the courage or our brave men and women who put their lives at risk in the line of duty.
my uncles out in afghanistan i hope that i dont have to be there watching this for him but i have huge respect to those who have lost family thru this shit a fight we shouldnt even be in. lives lost over nothing but they still deserve the respect and that i will always show the only thing i say now is bring them out before more get lost. R.I.P to the heros of this country and others that fight with us and fuck all them to two faced pricks that have no respect
This is truly an emotionnal moment... Is there any specialist that could explain to me the signification of the orders that the NCO shouts at the beginning? It would be much appreciated! Great video, thanks for posting!
Who could play it better in this context? Bandsmen traditionally double as stretcher bearers when a Battalion is in action carrying away their ruined pals. I once had a friend who was a Bandsmen and whose heart was truly broken except when he played.
@CaptGolightly Clearly you don't understand the sentiment behind it then. It's not promoting war for glory but acknowledging the sacrifice made by these men
@Kalamakooya1989 I meant no offence by my observations...mostly I do not post when in that frame of mind. However, I am just sick to death of this seemingly endless procession of ludicrous and very costly engagements launched at the whim of incompetent or worse still..deluded Politicians.
The West Yorkshire Police Band played this quite beautifully in front of a tiny ceremony at 9am 6th June 2010 on the D-day beaches. It was so poignant I was in tears. Only 3 veterans left in attendance from the Royal Dragoons, it was a privelege to be there.
popperite, your so right. We embrace new cultures and peoples. There are very few scraps of British culture remaining because we "give in" to new cultures.
The way we commemorate the 11th will never change, it can only become stronger.
Its just so depressing that so few countries outside the commonwealth remember on the 11th. I always had the impression that it was an international event, but its not.
That's probably because of the memory of WW2 taking precedence in a lot of other nations. For the Britts the memory of the Great War has been very powerfull. They integrated their remembrance of that into the existing Remembrance day.
Such a pity that we cannot live in Peace with one another on this tiny we know as Earth.
This music always brings a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye as I remember all those who made the ultimate scrifice, that now allows me to write these words.
Its not a time to wonder why it happened, or to argue whether it should have happened. Its a time to accept that it did happen, and a time to respect and remember the sacrifice of human life that was given.
Was at the menin gate when they played this beautiful piece of music a few days ago. It will always be moving reading all those names while listing to this. Always someones son..We will remember them.
As I listen to this very moving music I think of my 5 great uncles who were killed in WW1 and also both my grandfathers who were wounded, one losing a leg. I also think of both my parents who served in WW2 and one of my Uncles held prisoner of war by the Japanese for 3 years. I find nothing bombastic about the way our nation remembers those who served and lost their lives for all our freedoms, to suggest otherwise is insulting.

I was watching a documentary on WW1 the other night and a gentlemen stood on the steps at outbreak of war and remarked on his disgust at the London mob mentality and fervour for war. Unfortunately, Britain retains some of that vainglorious arrogance and when it's memorial sentiment should have humility, it has bombast.
Messylin expand upon your obscure perspective, by believing the representation of WW1 through the media you are doing precisely the same as the public of Britain did in WW1. i have spent years researching the socio-historic context and literative effects of the media in WW1. the people of Britain were lulled into the belief that glory in war is the primary focus of warfare. through the work of propagandist columnists such as Jessie Pope. Research her poem titled "The Game".
(cont.) please don't offend those who have lost loved ones with unfounded comments based upon a limited knowledge. do your research. Jessie Pope was one example of the medias propagandists. Elgar chose the "noble" key of E-flat for this tribute to the noblest of his friends, August Jaeger, whose name in German meaning "Hunter" was immortalized as "Nimrod".

Its a Black week for our lads .The rifles and Welsh Guards are getting Battered at the moment. But we will dig in and and will come out the other side. They deserve to shine for all time!!
For me, as others have said, this music HAS to be played by a British Military Band and is ALWAYS the music of remembrance sunday......from when I was a little kid, for today and until I am no more............Beautiful
After a hard day having to listen to the ravings of our lunatic traitorous Government, listening to this makes me proud again of my English heritage. Beautiful.
I was there that day. It was a beautiful experience. This haunting piece a fitting tribute to the boys who gave us their all. Rest in peace brave lads.
you ever see the the final episode of blackadder where they finally go over the trenches.
this piece always makes me think it'd be perfect for the climax of a film piece. silent, no sound effects. the bullets are flying, comrads getting killed, but the soldiers keep charging into certain death.
of course, that series is awesome, the final episode very moving. this piece of music would be very apt for a ww1 film ending, I think the world needs a realistic, savage and moving WW1 movie, we are yet to have a good one. Imagine if they made one in the style of Band of Brothers, wow..
@news672 Cracking vid..even if it wasnt played by the greatest ..the Band of HM Royal Marines...thanks for posting this though....i've been serving with the Royal Marine Commando's since leaving school......jesus...nearly 14 years ago now....have accumulated quite a spot of rank now..currently CSM X Coy 42 Commando...and hearing this on rememberance day STILL gives me goosebumps..a lump in my throat..and a teary eye..and the feeling of tempered pride to wear this uniform. Thanks..so many Thanks

It is a beautiful, moving piece...full of sadness, but also hope. As a Yank, I think you Brits sure have it right!

After a hard day having to listen to the ravings of our lunatic traitorous Government, listening to this makes me proud again of my English heritage. Beautiful.

This music always reminds me of Remembrance Sunday. So moving.

I was there that day. It was a beautiful experience. This haunting piece a fitting tribute to the boys who gave us their all. Rest in peace brave lads.

Wonderfully moving tune, always makes me think of sacrifice on the Western Front...

you ever see the the final episode of blackadder where they finally go over the trenches.
this piece always makes me think it'd be perfect for the climax of a film piece. silent, no sound effects. the bullets are flying, comrads getting killed, but the soldiers keep charging into certain death.

of course, that series is awesome, the final episode very moving. this piece of music would be very apt for a ww1 film ending, I think the world needs a realistic, savage and moving WW1 movie, we are yet to have a good one. Imagine if they made one in the style of Band of Brothers, wow..
