really cool stuff, anyone who likes this beat should check out Mike clark's "loft funk".. dude was one of the first to lay down drums with this type of feel. check out my videos too! i'm not as good haha
So keep up the masterful work and gift Rick as you travel the world inspiring and moreover helping drummers reach higher levels. True musicianship is a lifelong study as everyone can improve..(well those who are a legend in their own mind won't as they are the best...just ask them!) The "closing hi hat" sticking has cleaned my playing up so much..."Tiny huge things"..Thank you again and I'm going through "all about the groove" now and will send an update to my space perhaps? God Bless..Dr. Dave
A real drummer will certainly recognize the power of mastering the basics. Rick mastered all of it then applied it to the kit and his playing is unparalleled by anyone in funk drumming. I don't claim to be much at all..just another drummer since I was 15 when I started gigging and gigged for 11 years in school. I have all of Rick's DVDs and have applied it to my playing and am deeply grateful for how clean and smooth my playing has become. Thanks Rick for being all you are! Dr. Dave
I think you didn't navigate properly through the DVD. Both of my DVDs have more than 4 hours of in depth instructional material and playing examples. Please email me directly if you need help navigating to the instructional sections......Thanks, RIck
sorry hate to be the hater.. but as far as linear grooves go.. those are complicated, but at the same time they really arent all that interesting/creative. I think that is the biggest part of playing a linear groove is to be able to captivate with your groove.. I just think this isnt very creative.. also his dvd is garbage and a total waste of money.. it pissed me off i spent the money on a dvd he doesnt even explain
I disagree. He's showing a groove here with all the whistles and stops ... you can choose to go minimal or maximal, it's up to you ... it sounds like you're frustrated and just venting it out here. As with all drum books, DVDs etc., take a little bit from here, a little bit from there and mix it all into your own personal thang.
@MrHathouse: haha ... I'm not really all that sure that "maximal" is a word! Although if you Google "maximal music" you come up with A LOT of matches ... hmmm ... "maximal drumming" anyone?
some may say this stuff is easy to play. sure the rhythmic concepts are doable but the way they are executed is what separates the pros from the shmoes folks. you may be able to play what Rick plays here but I'm pretty sure, unless you are a next basement drum prodigy, you won't play it like Rick does.
It's easy, now before all the haters come out of the woodwork, hear me out lol. On paper its easy, extremely impressive but simple to play, but just trying to imitate it is like "woah rick, can you slow down there" lol and theres lots of "sorry what was that agains" lol I cant find the notation for this, so just watching it trying to pick it up is impossible. Almost like its been coded lol
you don't like DW's? maybe you heard a poorly tuned set, because i can honestly say in my opinion of course that they are the best sounding drums to ever be made
Not my deal. Any Pearl or Gretsch kit is far better in my opinion. DW i feel you have to work to make sound good, which you can do, but with Pearl you have to work to make them sound bad.
@dragflamdrummer DW are the cheapest made, over priced bullshit drums EVER. Yamaha are the most well built...extremely sturdy but lacking in wow quality...but the award for best sounding, most played/recorded of all time and subsequently best drums in the world simply must go to Ludwig...trust me having owned ALL of the above and being a Ludwig COMPLETE DISLIKER for nearly 20 years...nothing could EVER come close to them. Ludwig CONSISTENTLY decade by decade produce the BEST DRUMS EVER!!
nice groove, would like to have heard the toms a bit more, kinda muffled if you ask me, they didn't seem to have alot of tone to them, a bit dead sounding. I like a good 'thud' sound but with more 'note' or 'pitch' quality. that's just me though
log the man --- people that write the things that you do,shows that you don't have any ability to play the drums and therefore have to put people down instead
try treating people kindly then you could get a better job, then buy a drum set and learn how to lay down your own grooves and quit haten people so much!!
all cymbals will bent and feck up with age. but if your looking for good ones, try sabians or zildjians. it all depends on the price too, the higher the price the higher the quality. i have a set of sabian xs20's and they are good, semi-pro cymbals :)

man, i couldn't agree with you more. i hate when people make comments and try to rip into a drummer when they don't have any musical knowledge to back it up. Gadd is definitely a drum legend and amazes us all, but you can't deny that Rick is so completely solid and can lay it down!

Most Istanbul cymbals are just pure quality... of course zildjian make great cymbals too. But with istanbul you dont have to pay for the name, you pay for the quality!!
