  • Cool :)

  • Sooo tight yet so free!

  • Tecnica esecutiva a dir poco perfetta, di classe e stupenda. Ottimo insegnante!!!

  • The parallel between him and Steve Gadd are pretty clear.

  • is it possible to find the sheet music of what he's playing somewhere??

  • @hugopelle Actually, this is available. I have the transcription in my collection. Have a look on Drummerworld, I think that's where I got it.

  • @MrJonnyNitro I didn't find it on the website... Is it in the "drum solos" section?

  • Just need's a 10" splash and this would be the "perfect" kit!

Is it ok to be jealous?

  • he's ok.... but he's no Mike Clark

  • Love Rick Latham

  • у меня его книжка с нотами есть) 1980года)

  • WTF?

  • nice how you playing the Steve Gadd Solo Intro!!! thumps Up!!!!

  • THIS guy is a REAL drummer. Wow! Great fluidity. Laid back, evenflow. Awesome groove Bro!

  • rick gives a floating feel to his grooves

  • Rick, it looks like you put as much effort in to your solos as I do in to cleaning the house...WHY CAN'T I HAVE THE SAME RESULTS?!?!

    p.s superb.

  • everyone should strive to play with such relaxed, looseness.

  • Love his high hat and snare rolls, choice.

  • Great, grooving stuff. Rick is a beast!!

  • He's so fluid in his playing, he could be water in disguise.

  • I went to his drum clinic this evening. He's a beast. =]

  • This man uses dream cymbals!!

  • really cool stuff, anyone who likes this beat should check out Mike clark's "loft funk".. dude was one of the first to lay down drums with this type of feel. check out my videos too! i'm not as good haha

  • whole kit sounds great

  • So keep up the masterful work and gift Rick as you travel the world inspiring and moreover helping drummers reach higher levels. True musicianship is a lifelong study as everyone can improve..(well those who are a legend in their own mind won't as they are the best...just ask them!) The "closing hi hat" sticking has cleaned my playing up so much..."Tiny huge things"..Thank you again and I'm going through "all about the groove" now and will send an update to my space perhaps? God Bless..Dr. Dave

  • A real drummer will certainly recognize the power of mastering the basics. Rick mastered all of it then applied it to the kit and his playing is unparalleled by anyone in funk drumming. I don't claim to be much at all..just another drummer since I was 15 when I started gigging and gigged for 11 years in school. I have all of Rick's DVDs and have applied it to my playing and am deeply grateful for how clean and smooth my playing has become. Thanks Rick for being all you are! Dr. Dave

  • @davonwav wouldn't say it was un-paralleled...good...FREAKIN GOOD but not unparalleled...david garibaldi for starters...just sayin man. :-)

  • Way better than I could do. Wait a minute, I'm not even a drummer.

  • yeaaaah, i like it

  • Yo Groovesyncopate,

I think you didn't navigate properly through the DVD. Both of my DVDs have more than 4 hours of in depth instructional material and playing examples. Please email me directly if you need help navigating to the instructional sections......Thanks, RIck

  • Turkish cymbal are amazing ! İstanbul

  • sorry hate to be the hater.. but as far as linear grooves go.. those are complicated, but at the same time they really arent all that interesting/creative. I think that is the biggest part of playing a linear groove is to be able to captivate with your groove.. I just think this isnt very creative.. also his dvd is garbage and a total waste of money.. it pissed me off i spent the money on a dvd he doesnt even explain

  • I disagree. He's showing a groove here with all the whistles and stops ... you can choose to go minimal or maximal, it's up to you ... it sounds like you're frustrated and just venting it out here. As with all drum books, DVDs etc., take a little bit from here, a little bit from there and mix it all into your own personal thang.

  • @themancable i agree with everything you're saying. except for... maximal?!? is that a word?

  • @MrHathouse: haha ... I'm not really all that sure that "maximal" is a word! Although if you Google "maximal music" you come up with A LOT of matches ... hmmm ... "maximal drumming" anyone?

  • @themancable hahaha i wish i could maximalise my drumming :L

  • so smooth !

  • some may say this stuff is easy to play. sure the rhythmic concepts are doable but the way they are executed is what separates the pros from the shmoes folks. you may be able to play what Rick plays here but I'm pretty sure, unless you are a next basement drum prodigy, you won't play it like Rick does.

  • @drumdadio exactly!. On point dude.

  • love those istanbuls :) the most underrated make of cymbal!

  • @rustymakesmusic ... they do sound nice dont they .... I also like the Byzance line from Meinl

  • Now THAT'S how you play funk.

  • Really tasty playing. Nice sounds too, especially the snare.

  • Comment removed

  • Ok, it is mostly based on linear playing concept. A lot of these "elite" drummers play that way. I am learning this stuff now and its REALLY hard.

  • yes it's called playing linear rythms and of course it's all about the rudiments.

  • It's easy, now before all the haters come out of the woodwork, hear me out lol. On paper its easy, extremely impressive but simple to play, but just trying to imitate it is like "woah rick, can you slow down there" lol and theres lots of "sorry what was that agains" lol I cant find the notation for this, so just watching it trying to pick it up is impossible. Almost like its been coded lol

  • gretsch man all the way bro. renown maples

  • got one in my basement.... those are some nice sounding kits.

  • This is Rick Latham doing his best Steve Gadd impersontation.

Lovely style, though it's what ever drummer of Rick's generation sounded like after Gadd came up with that innovative style.

Nice playing. I'd call this "old school" fusion/funk.

  • fattest drummer ever xD

  • not by a long shot ... rick is fat but not as fat as Larry Londin or that guy from Prince`s band

  • think he's referring to his groove but i could be mistaken

  • haha .... you might be right . I had not even thought about that .

  • i'd say ludwigs are the nicest...the legacy classic is incredible. nice playing man!

  • freaking tasty

  • nice pumas !

  • seems like alot of people like drumming in those pumas

  • you don't like DW's? maybe you heard a poorly tuned set, because i can honestly say in my opinion of course that they are the best sounding drums to ever be made

  • Not my deal. Any Pearl or Gretsch kit is far better in my opinion. DW i feel you have to work to make sound good, which you can do, but with Pearl you have to work to make them sound bad.

  • actually, DW are the best drums made. But it has to do with tuning it.And i prefeer Yamaha than Pearl. Just my opinion

  • @dragflamdrummer DW are the cheapest made, over priced bullshit drums EVER. Yamaha are the most well built...extremely sturdy but lacking in wow quality...but the award for best sounding, most played/recorded of all time and subsequently best drums in the world simply must go to Ludwig...trust me having owned ALL of the above and being a Ludwig COMPLETE DISLIKER for nearly 20 years...nothing could EVER come close to them. Ludwig CONSISTENTLY decade by decade produce the BEST DRUMS EVER!!

  • @JamonjiCahillibongo I would have thought Pearl made good sets. Buddy Rich used Ludwig so it's gotta be the truth. Shows what I knew...

  • @JamonjiCahillibongo i can asure you dw are definitely not the cheapest made

  • dude...c'mon

  • DW = the nuts

To NDiesel31 - Pearl kit BD's are the worst things in the world to try to get a good sound out of (apart from a Stagg Kit - rofl).

I have a Yamaha Absolute Beech Custom and love its tone, but also love the sound of my teachers new DW.

This guys kit just sounds lush, if a bit dead sounding like marty3699 said.

  • Dude Your Fucking Awesome....

  • Is that the Mel Lewis signature hi-hat?

  • his signatur stick are the shit!!! great drummer, he got da fonk! ^^

  • I thin The sound is processed with an programm.

No kit of the world sounds like this

  • That's the beauty of DW's mic'd up. Sound so good you'll want to hi-five your sound engineer :P

  • Yeah :P

    btw good drumming, it grooves

  • your kit sound blows my mind... what amazing pitch bend on the toms.

  • looove this snare solo, u're good man xD txs for this video

  • HOLY SHIT! the snare's sound, fuck!, the groove!, omfg!

  • In What Band does he play?

  • nice groove, would like to have heard the toms a bit more, kinda muffled if you ask me, they didn't seem to have alot of tone to them, a bit dead sounding. I like a good 'thud' sound but with more 'note' or 'pitch' quality. that's just me though

  • steve gadd style ! nice

  • damn, this guy is GOOD.

  • that is one of the best sounding kits i have ever heard

  • if you wana hear a real nice sounding drumkit listen to vanni stefanni's kit with the UFIP cymbals on it, sounds sick as man

  • log the man --- people that write the things that you do,shows that you don't have any ability to play the drums and therefore have to put people down instead

try treating people kindly then you could get a better job, then buy a drum set and learn how to lay down your own grooves and quit haten people so much!!

  • you don't need a good drumset to be a good drummer

shows how much your opinion counts for

  • 0.01-0.18 solo steve gadd

  • so i got his dvd for christmas 25th aniversy of his book......dont buy it

  • i need some good symbols..kinds that wont dent, any suggestions?

  • haha the kind that won't dent haha

  • wtf?

  • most cymbals don't dent

  • well mine did. either im hittin em too hard (which im probly not) or they are some crappy symbols lol

  • all cymbals will bent and feck up with age. but if your looking for good ones, try sabians or zildjians. it all depends on the price too, the higher the price the higher the quality. i have a set of sabian xs20's and they are good, semi-pro cymbals :)

  • try spelling cymbals right first then maybe u should get a job and go out and buy some cymbals that don't suck balls

  • dude im not even old enough to get a job.

  • LOL...That was funny!

  • logtheman08 just got pwned

  • @logtheman08 Try just chilling the fuck out and not trying to get at peoples necks every time you make a youtube comment. Every video i watch theres some person just carrying on saying "AHHHH YOU SPELT THIS WORD WRONG SO YOU SHOULD KILL YOURSELF" i'm sick of it. Please just chill. I will also.

  • That's got to be on of the weirdest Trat grip technique's I've ever seen.. Looks like it's working out well though.

  • joder es mi tio pablo

  • pure energy...what a groovin genius!

  • beginning sounds like Gadd's 'army solo'

  • i just saw him play in a drum master class he is awsome, and a great guy !

  • Fuck yes. That lick had me oozing with pride.

  • that was neat!!

if anyone knows what toms and snare those are please tell me, they sound cool

  • Its a DW kit.

  • tony williams yellow?

  • very sweet linear chaffee-like

  • yea! hes my friend's mother's boyfriend! whoo!

  • he's my mom's boyfriend.

    seriously.

  • thats fucking great

  • Love his snare

  • man this dude pocket grooves are really clean. However, my main man on the drums is dennis chambers

  • no actually he a makes a living being a studio musician/ drum instruction book writer(i own one of them). I wish there were an end to ignorant people but it is people the likes of them that give me fuel.. to prove them wrong. Sick video

  • haha as much of a bitch as you are i gotta admit that was pretty funny

  • dude u need to research this guy before u go sayin some stupid shit,, this guys has an educational Background u wouldnt believe. gad cant touch him.

  • man, i couldn't agree with you more. i hate when people make comments and try to rip into a drummer when they don't have any musical knowledge to back it up. Gadd is definitely a drum legend and amazes us all, but you can't deny that Rick is so completely solid and can lay it down!

  • if he looped the beat he did at 1:10-1:12 it would be so phat. if only he kept it going it would be heaven!

    still,

    amazing.

  • that double bass sounds awesome!

  • Hey Rick you've heard it a million times before thank you for the 25 anniversary video it has helped me with my playing and with my students ..

    Mike

  • what kind of istanbul's are those? ron

  • i love to listen as much as i love to play.

    paul.

  • does he keep his cymbals very high or is it just an idea?

  • its funny, i know i could play 90% of that, but at the same time i cant. i guess i need to work in my imagination a bit :-p

  • prety cool,nice drum kit

  • The snare is just awesome :] And the hi tom :) Awesome.

  • That hi-hat sounds really good, the ride too. and of course the drums to. good drumming

  • you can really hear the reaction from the sticks when he does the dopubles on hi hat

  • thats because he does them so cleanly

  • De este tipo se aprende mucho :D

  • that kit is hot

  • yea it is

  • He knows whats up. fo sho

  • nice grooves!

  • If you like .. Buy Istanbul Radiant, or Funky Rock series.. I use Istanbul Radiant series. If you want to listen, look my videos..

  • That's Istanbul Traditional series Thin Hi-Hat.. That's around 150$ in Turkey.. I propose Istanbul Sultan series cymbals. Theese has got incredible sound for Jazz...

  • the begining - it was Steve Gadd!

  • that sure was i think he is a gadd fan like the rest of us.lol

  • coooooool !

  • This is guy is pretty slick, I can't handle his hair though haha.

  • I whole heartedly agree. But Weckl's hair, circa 1988, has be the worst and most offensive thing to ever look at.

    Fucking "poodle-do".

  • Hahaha yeah man, but this guy STILL has the same haircut hahahaha. I love it once he gets going though, so all is forgiven hahaha. (Oh gracious, Bozzio....)

  • haha love this grove. but it reminds me of the video game XIII. idk, others who have played the game will understand. ;D

  • The little bell taps were really nice.

  • This summer im going to buy some Istanbul cymbals, cant wait. What series is he using?

  • Mike Clark

  • I use a lot of Latham's books to teach with.

    "Funk Studies" being my favorite....

    Great and knowledgeable drummer....

  • Most Istanbul cymbals are just pure quality... of course zildjian make great cymbals too. But with istanbul you dont have to pay for the name, you pay for the quality!!

& istanbul dont produce overpriced scrap metal starter cymbal sets...

  • anyone looking for new versatile cymbals should have a look at the Zildjian K custom Hybrid ride and Hi hats.. amazing! I bought them in the US and brought em back to the UK were they cost double!

  • istanbul better than zildjian

  • By like one million times

  • are you serious, no they arent, zildjian has the best cymbals in the world

  • Since I bought my Istanbul ride my little cousins play in the yard and throw my old Zildjians at each other for fun.

    It's just that amazing

  • That is quite a claim :P Still, each to their own, they are nice cymbals though.

I love this clip so much, I remember seeing it on drummer world before I really understood the linear gadd type style. Still Rick is one of my fav drummers.

  • Rick is a great drummer but his groove's are limted. But I love the guy's sticks Pro-Mark Rick Latham "groove" Stick.

  • how are his grooves limited?

  • i love his use of toms...

    great drummer!!

  • One of those drummers whose hands move in such a great looking way. A true model for how to play drums well. Such great tone as well.

  • IF ONLY HE KEPT 1:10 GOING!!!

  • Easily one of the funkiest drummers on the planet!

  • i agree lol tha was lush

  • One of my favorite funk drummers!

  • nice

  • That was a nice thick groove with some smooth technique. It's inspiring.

  • playing with a single pedal and a double are two separate things. ones not better than the other. two different skills that can be combined, which sounds the best. thats what tony royster jr. does and he sounds better than this guy. this guys good tho. better than me.

  • The thing about tony royster jr is that he just plays grooves and licks he's learnt written by people like Rick Latham! So i think Rick's the better drummer
