The best is Nancy Wilsons version. She kept the story telling style of the original but sings more colourfull than Bobby. Also Ray Charles Live version is better to than Bobby's.
HUGE Nancy Wilson fan. The version I just heard from her was very Jazz. It felt joyful and "cool." That felt odd for this song. The first half I enjoyed. The rest was disturbingly disconnected from the song's story for this listener. I love Wilson as a story teller and vocalist, but this song and its treatment didn't work for this fan.
I love Tammy but the folks are right on this one. It's Bobbie Joe Gentry's song and that's all there is to it. Phrasing is so important especially in story songs. But then again, Bobbie probably wouldn't do 'Stand By Your Man' or 'Till I Get It Right' the way Tammy does either.
I'm sorry but while the drum beat ads an interesting touch it looses the eeriness and the gothic touch the Bobby Gentry version had. Half of the songs appeal, at least to me, is the haunting orchestral music that accompanied Gentry's voice and this song just doesn't have the same feel or impact as the original.
@beerpongplayer1 Thank GOD almighty! Someone else gets it. All these nay-sayers.... Like my good friend, the former president of the local chapter of the Tammy Wynette fan club, used to say: Bobby Gentry wrote it. But Tammy lived it.
I just don't feel this song, like I do when Bobby Gentry sings it. Sorry Tammy, this song just wasn't meant for you. Sort of like Bobby singing D-I-V-O-R-C-E....
Tammy's version is awesome! I feel sorry for Ms Gentry. You can see the moss on the trees and feel the heavy humid air of Mississippi in the furnace of August. Someone asked if tis was the actual bridge. Well if you look real close you can see a girl with a seventies' platinum bouffant caked with aqua net hairspray dropping' something into the muddy waters ect ect. Yes, it is and the girl is Tammy Wynette throwing a voodoo doll of George Richey into the muddy waters ect ect
Incredible ! What a gem. I loved Bobbie's version but Tammy sings it so powerfully and with a tear in her voice. Never even knew this existed. Thanks for posting it. A hundred wow's !!
It really says something about the richness of a song when you can unpack a whole novel and movie out of it, as was the case here. Wonderful version. Why does this have so few views?!?!!
Great version. Bobbie Gentry and Tammy both came from the deep South.Rosanne Cash is performing a stunning, fierce interpretation on her current tour The song was on the top 100 list Johnny Cash gave Rosanne on her 18th birthday. To date, over 200 covers and over 40 million records sold. The song still brings author Bobbie Gentry a six figure royalty check every year.
Bobbie gentry totally owns at this song, nancy and tammy are great but bobbie is by far the best

Nope. Doesn't work. Tammys voice does not suit the stark lyrics. Fail.

sorry, this just doesn't match up to Gentry's original. This is singing a song. Gentry was telling a story...there is a HUGE difference.
