I remember an interview he did just after Slaves & Masters came out and he told Blackmore that he would join Purple if it wasn't just to sing somebody else's drivel and since then that's mainly what he's doing.

Apart from 'Black Night', I think Joe didn't do the MK.II oldies well back in 1991. He sure did the MK.II(b) 'Perfect Strangers' songs they did well though.

I personally like his voice, he has a similar tone of voice to Gillans which is why I think he sings this bloody well! Poor Ian hasn't the voice he once had cos he didn't look after it properly but for me mk2 was the purple line-up that was best. Having said that they were all good in their own ways and if Hughes and Bolin hadn't been so messed up on drugs it could've had still worked? Who knows. Peace all.

Thats absolutely true what you say--I wanna hear this song only sang by "The ultimate Purple Voice" Ian Gillan--and if Ritchie wouldn`t be such a great asshole this "clown of licked cunts" would have never been a member of Purple--and he has no own ideas-so he must sing other peoples music

Gillan has almost lost his voice and purple doesn't sell many records no more, which blackmore realized in time.. JLT still has a great voice, in my opinion.

I saw Deep Purple days ago, and Ian has NOT lost his voice. Ian is what 64? He still has a pretty good range when you think about his age... Joe still sings almost as good as back in the 80's, but Gillan sounds better now than on the 1987 'House Of Blue Light' tour actually.

well.. I've heard many live versions of Highway Star that I don't think he sings well at all anymore.. He doesn't sing 'child in time' anymore.. I think that even on the 'easier numbers' he fails quite often.. Just a personal opinion.. But to say that he sounds better now than in 1987 is just sad.. Was he that horrible back then? Probably over-touring + drinking too much.. "He still has a pretty good range when you think about his age" Well.. you can certainly hear that he's getting old! :S

Only a retard would expect them to do 'Child In Time' these days. That hardly even worked after the reunion at all anyway. Gillan nailed all the songs except that he struggled a bit during 'Space Truckin', but his voice was great again when they did 'Speed King'...surprisingly good. You can't compare Gillan and JLT. Both are great singers. Gillan isn't 30 anymore, but some seem to think that way, and expect him to sing like he used to decades ago. He DID sound better than 1987, no kidding.

well.. Ian strugles with high notes (perhaps due to his age), and remind me again, what was it that made old Ian extra special ? . I don't think he's 30 anymore, but I wanted you to realize that there's a big difference in saying "he's a good singer" and "he's a good singer for his OLD AGE"... But it's fine that you don't agree. It's pointless to discuss this further.. I would really like Ian to be as good as you say. Then I'd attend the concerts. And btw, Child in Time is a very popular song.

Apart from the few 2002 performances (which was less than good), 'Child In Time' hasn't been played since the US & Asian leg of 'The Battle Rages On' tour in 1995, w. Steve, but they continued to draw crowds that enjoyed themself a lot without it in the set. Tons of other classics, even though I would love to hear it again, I know Ian can't hit those notes, and I would walk away dissapointed if not, so it's in a way better off without it in the set. I would love them to ressurect 'Fools' again.
