This may seem hokey today, but really the symbolism and originality make this a masterpiece. I honestly don't know whether your typical viewer in 1896 was frightened by this- while this came at a time when film was very rare and thus seemed much more real, it's pretty much universal that anyone with a brain bigger than a walnut will realize that the special effects are pathetic. Still, I appreciate and admire this landmark in cinema culture.
everyone keeps saying this was 'really scary' back in 1896, but it wasn't really. The director intended this to be goofy and slightly comical. Looks at how they all act. Gorges Méliès said himself he never intended to scare anyone. This film was literally made before anyone had thought of making a film scary. He was heading in the right direction by this point but it wasn't until a year later or so that the horror genre was created. I'm not saying who created it because there is no actual answer
People hating on this film. Guys you gotta remember, in 1896, this shit was cutting edge and scary. Yeah no shit in 2011 after multi-million dollar horror movie icons have been created. It looks pretty lame, but don't be so un-appreciative, take 3 and a half minutes of your life, and put yourself in the shoes of a person watching this in 1896, and just enjoy this historic work =]
Why are you people watching this when it clearly states it's from 1896 if you expect something with great special effects? Of course it's dated but it's historically important. Melies was the first to see the commercial value of film and he's every other movie you've seen. Go watch Avatar you ignorant pricks and stop bothering people who appreciate this.
just because this is old doesnt mean we're obligated to fall the fuck over saying how this piece of shits a master piece. The 3 stooges who went out of their way to make their haunted house cheesy was light years better effects AND A GOD DAMNED PLOT!
This dude was just bored and had way to much time on his god damned hands, nothing more
@Deathsiren so your saying your a faggot? Or are you calling me a faggot because I pointed out how somethings funny as fuck because it looks like shit yet many are falling over themselves as if wearing turtle neck sweaters and sandals sipping lattes at a starbucks while listening to that faggot simon & garfunkle shit... oh, thatd be you LMFAO
The 3 stooges are a generation ahead of this movie, you can't legitimately compare the 2. Either way, I'm not saying that this is a fucking masterpiece here, and I was bored watching this for the most part, but you can't deny the ground-breaking significance of the series of films Georges made, let alone insult him.
Thank you for the upload!

@MyComicStyle It took a couple watch-throughs but it looks like it goes something like this:
- Dracula summons an assistant and uses a cauldron to make a hot chick, then hides everything
- two heroes enter the room. One is trying to convince the other the castle is haunted, the other guy never sees it and eventually sneaks away
- The remaining guy tries to take a seat, my fav scene
- Bunch of tormenting, including the hot chick transformation gag
- Eventually Dracula gets the cross
