As for any "King of Diction" I still think that Schipa retains the title. However, RT comes ever so close.....& done w/such a clear, beautiful, clarion tone. Bravo!
From the start, Tucker had such a beautiful tone and line as well as an excellent dramatic sense. Thank you for sharing this early souvenir of a great artist.
Tucker was already married To Sara when in 1941 jan made his debut in this ROLE and he admired jan's tech. he MUST HAVE HEARD IT AND HE LISTENED TO PAUL ALTHOUSE IS TEACHER COMPLETELY WHO TAUGHT HIM TO DO IT LIKE THIS EAXACTLY-- SO GERMAN MAKES A POINT WELL TAKEN.
VERY GOOD performance by Tucker!!! I wish Sodero hadn't slowed the pace so many times, but, nonetheless, well worth hearing the young Tucker. Thank you VERY much for posting this!!!!!
The young Tucker voice actually reminds me vaguely of Peerce's sound, though not as dark, but there are some overtones very similar. Excellent legato line and a effortless vocal production, he was a wonderful lyrico spinto in his youth who could sing very beautifully, later on it matured into a rich full spinto sound. His vocal development was very similar to Caruso's but Tucker wasn't a smoker so his voice matured slower. His top sounds quite powerful even here but later it became enormous.
This is so amazing I had heard this brdcst in the 70's on a reel tape but not with this good quality and it's hard to believe how much bigger and more spinto his voice became by the time I heard him 14 years later in the house he always had a strong top but it gained in every way later. He always was confident and some people try to put him down but usually they make themselves look stupid doing so. Thanks too my friend and fellow Tucker fan Vinyl for the post.
beautiful in every way

Love it; and quite satisfying sound considering the date. Not my favorite aria but impeccably sung.
