Who mislead who. When Deng Xiaoping visited the US in 1979, no one raised their "concern" about Tibet. No One demonstrate. The western propaganda media don't write anything about Tibet. Dalai Lama was completely ignored. Then in 1989 after the end of cold war, the US policy change. So do the propaganda media who follow the US government policy with their gossips about Tibet.

However, if this democracy comes with an expesnive price (such as losing 1/4 territory, or the great degrade of living standard), no Chinese will welcome it.
South Korea is now a rich and democracy country, but it is based on the fast econmony development during the military dictatorship before 1990s. I think most people over 30 can defintely recall those violent protests in south Korea before 1990s.

I can't speak for everyone in the Western world, but I will say that my experience has been that the motivation for advocating Tibetan separatism has exclusively been the history of human rights abuses in the PRC.
If China were a liberal democracy nobody in the Western world would care about Tibetan independence. The Dalai Lama probably wouldn't even care.

That's what "Free" Tibet actually originally meant...Give Tibet the freedom to practice their customs without fear.
Somewhere along the line the word "Free" got interpreted as the more literal separatist movement.

Australia supports and gives funds and education to Aboriginal communities. What does China give to Tibet? Soldiers, beatings and forced abortions and sterilizations.
