I haven't heard an ending theme that has nearly made me cry since Metroid Prime 3's ending theme.... I never played this game, but from what I saw from my friends, this game looks like a masterpiece.
I think that this song speaks a subtle message across (my opinion). Think of Dark Souls like real life. It can be difficult, frustrating, and having that feeling of giving up at times. With a "flame of hope" keeping you going. When you get to the last boss and finally beat the game, your reward is time for you to finally have peace. Time to relax and look back on your long journey of how hard you worked to get where you are.
Thanks for an awesome journey Dark Souls. You have taught me what gaming really is. This song just concluded everything so well, pretty much as the top comment said!
I was playing Dark souls on first playthrough, and realized on the gaping dragon fight, that the game had something to do w/ Motoi Sakuraba. The theme resembled too much the bosses fights at VP2.
I always bump into Motoi Sakuraba's music, and like it - and don't realize it is him until I check. I been listening to his music since he was developing for Sega Genesis lol

I think this theme Represented Peace. I mean think about it throughout the entire game Was there A peaceful piece of music throughout your journey? No it was Dark and gruesome It was a constant nightmare and you were just some Filthy Peasant. No light in the world No sun. I had nightmares Every night with this game only to wake up finding myself In the same nightmare. Then when we beated the game we finnaly had 6 minutes of peace The nightmares turned into real dreams...... No more suffering.
you know a game is good when you can come back to it and still enjoy it. I've played Dark Souls up until NG+++ and still havent gotten tired of it. Now im starting a brand new game with different class. Fantastic game.

The amazing thing about this game is conveyed in that the ending isn't victorious. The boss battle had no inspiring music throughout, or joyful choir afterwards. The credits theme was not some brass orchestra celebrating your win.
You instead reflect on how hard you killed, and killed, and killed, and how because you killed virtually everything in sight, you gained...

...And that is why this game is so magnificent.
Do not overlook it. It is really one to go down with willing majesty.

The idea that you canonically die because of being undead allowing your deaths to be apart of the story itself adding to the drama and struggles that the protagonist endures until the end has such deeper meanings than simply respawning or starting again.

I'm just going to say, Dark Souls was not that hard of a game as some people make it out to be. I honostly found it easy to block most attacks or roll out of their way and tank just about everything. BUT, this was an incredibly fun game that is definitely among my favorites.
@Haygor841 I was trying to explain this to a friend who's having a tough time with it: Now that I've beat the crap out of it, I look back and say, "that wasn't hard at all". But that's just the best thing about the game mechanics, it forces you to get better as you play. When you first burst into the world, shit is so frustrating and challenging, but as soon as you finally pass a tough area, you think, "I could do that 100 times now"...and you probably end up having to do so lol.
It may not be as creative as Minecraft or LittleBigPlanet 2
But I will say this: The Art, Tone, Atmosphere and Setting is both Spellbinding AND Captivating. I was deeply immersed into the game all 80 hours, up until the end. When this music played in the credits...I shed a tear

@M4NDON This, and Demon's Souls, was about on par with NG2 in my opinion. They're two different kinds of difficult really. Ninja Gaiden is all about lightning fast reflexes, this is all about timing and tactics.

This is one of the very few games that I actually sat through the credits for. Only because of this wonderful song.
You feel a sense of accomplishment. But when those sad and graceful melodies come in, you almost feel sad that you vanquished every challenge before you. All you had set out for and done is no more. Gazing upon the Bell Tower while running through Sen's Fortress. Defeating Lautrec and rescuing the Fire Keeper's soul. Then ultimately destroying Gwyn, Lord of Cinder.
That soundtrack makes me feel so lonely, isolated from reality and of course sad yet it's so beatiful and relaxing. It's kind of song that fits best with the mood in rainy and cloudy days :3

I think believe it or not this is the song that plays when you fight moonlight butterfly. I was watching the IGN 24 live stream and that boss battle sounded pretty similar to this. But youre right it sounds like it could be the credits song. So sad and peaceful.

playing this game as a different class each time is the most fun i've had
-going in as a knight with heavy armor to fight a huge boss, taking your time blocking, waiting for the right time, able to take a few hits...
-going to the same boss as thief, moving fast can't afford to get hit or you're dead...
-sorcerer, long range magic, stay at safe distance...
-archer, cross bow for mid range, long bow for distance, keep moving, if no other choice draw sword...
and so many more ways to play!

Its not about being better. Its about having fun. Dark souls hit the nail on the head for a old school reward system. (Staying alive) Thats something alot of games now days undermine to let everyone feel good no matter their play style. and i couldent agree with you more.

@JerichoCasio i know you posted this 2 weeks ago but your right about the reward system and staying alive likee when i was fighting orinstein and smough by myself when i bet them both with like no estus and barely any health after a couple of tries i was like YES OMG!!!! its a great game if people give it a chance

i have to say dark souls was one of the best games i have ever played all though their were some time were i got soo mad at the game were i wanted to quit but i dident i just keep going and i am glad i dident because now i can say i beat the worlds hardiest games!!

@FallenXREM Believe me, I want to believe derp souls is the hardest game as much as you do.. but it really isn't. lol. For next gen consoles, for sure.. but Ninja Gaiden 2 was just.. ugh.

@M4NDON This, and Demon's Souls, was about on par with NG2 in my opinion. They're two different kinds of difficult really. Ninja Gaiden is all about lightning fast reflexes, this is all about timing and tactics.

when i beat game and heard this it made me think back to all thos painful deaths i had fighting gravelord and ornstein and smoug :p and made me relax just like demon souls ending song

This is one of the very few games that I actually sat through the credits for. Only because of this wonderful song.
You feel a sense of accomplishment. But when those sad and graceful melodies come in, you almost feel sad that you vanquished every challenge before you. All you had set out for and done is no more. Gazing upon the Bell Tower while running through Sen's Fortress. Defeating Lautrec and rescuing the Fire Keeper's soul. Then ultimately destroying Gwyn, Lord of Cinder.

That soundtrack makes me feel so lonely, isolated from reality and of course sad yet it's so beatiful and relaxing. It's kind of song that fits best with the mood in rainy and cloudy days :3

I think believe it or not this is the song that plays when you fight moonlight butterfly. I was watching the IGN 24 live stream and that boss battle sounded pretty similar to this. But youre right it sounds like it could be the credits song. So sad and peaceful.
