I don't mean to start a polemic here, but I do fell that the only american opera singers that could do honour to italian opera in style, perfect diction, a true italian school of belcanto and "guts" are Beverly Sills, Marilyn Horne and Samuel Ramey..I find that all others are totally inadecuate for italian opera but great in french and german repertoire!
You completely forgot of such Italian stylists among American singers like Lella Cuberli,Elinor Ross(one of the best Normas and Alziras ever),Martile Rowland or Marisa Galvany and Olivia Stapp to name only few.
i was introduced to elizabeth by just browsing i love her voice and she has done some unique ornaments that i haven't heard other sopranos do listen to here mozart arias on her website
I was prepared to dislike this because of all the gushing comments about ornamentation. REMEMBER this is a women going to her DEATH. One does not ornament as tho it were the finale of I Puritani in such a case girls. Ornamentation aside, she has a fine voice and should have a great career(with better written cadenzas).
She belongs to the very few who can sing true coloratura--beautiful,flawless voice with perfect tenderness, agility and fluency, suggesting a kind of sublimated and eternally youthful feminity. Definitely, her vocal skills surpass that of Sills.
I completely agree on the fact that Miss Parcells was (and is) a brilliant soprano, but there are more than you think who can sing "true coloratura". As far as the Sills comment goes...I'll look the other way because I don't want to argue :P...
There is a 1971 San Francisco Opera version available on CD with Sutherland in her prime. Now THAT is what Maria Stuarda should sound like. This lady's high notes are squally like Ruth Ann Swenson.
In 1971 Sutherland had already past her prime(in fact her prime remained very ephemeral, maybe around 59~62,the rest of her "brilliant" career was sustained by her fame ),her annoying Gilda in 1971 London Symphony Orchestra version Rigoletto apparently show it (like many comments goes "Sutherland sound a bit toneless, anile for Gilda, she sings not badly considering her vocal abilities in collapsing.." "Besides short on the dictation,
Well, I respectfully disagree. I was in the SF Opera Chorus and sang in Maria Stuarda, Norma (twice (1972 and then 1982), the Merry Window (quite strange), and then Anna Bolena in 1983. Her sining was always spectacular. I wish you could have heard them and maybe you would feel differently. I do, however, think she should have retired at least 6 years earlier than she did, as some of the last performances were hideous.............
her singing is somewhat wearisome, languid, unstable and friable on high note, which renders her unsuitable for the sweet, vernal ,vivacious yet sentimental character...").And her performance in 1970 Les Huguenots is a disaster, desperate, squeezed and strained scream.(Haven't you ever heard that??)
Ms Parcells'voice may not sounds quite dramatic and vigorous, but its faculties do display what bel canto opera such as this requires. Next time before you intend to debase and insult an artist who is not as fortunate and starry as Sutherland, please do listen to her more works of all her career, never being so dogmatic and dominating.
Ruth Ann is a brilliant soprano. I don't want to start another argument with you, but really I have seen her live 4 times and have never been disappointed. Her high notes are not "squally" either. You just prefer a more full-bodied sound to them...but then can anyone hit a full-bodied note like Sutherland? Don't compare, it just turns things sour.
NO! NO ONE can out-ornament Sills. Sills was not going for beauty in this opera. She decided not to ornament too much so as to go for the desperate element of the character.
La interpretación, sobre todo el final, totalmente abstraida a su fatal suerte... es excelente, brillante.

I heard Sutjerland libe in 1971 /1974 **/1976/1080 and 1986 and 1963/1968.
** In Maria Stuarda
Parcells is musical but IMO not in Joan's league in voice, style and technique

Presumo che sia un video degli anni 80, visto che lei indossa l'armatura di mazinga z.
Meglio di tante ma nulla di speciale. Voce fragile in alcuni punti e si perde nei toni bassi.

Who cares if she out performs someone in any way. Just enjoy the beauty of the gift and talent of music that some people posses.

I've always wondered what it would sound like to carry the scale upward (on dio punitor).
She did it. Incredible. Also i think she out-ornamented Sills.
If there are any more clips please share them. She was a truly talented artist.
