By far this is the greatest version of this song and ironically in a language I'm not fluent in lol....just a beautiful tune and an eargasm for sure!!!!

Nostalgic and Sweet. I used to work for a Japanese trading company in San Francisco in 1980. After work, a bunch of us would travel to Japan town for SAKE and KARAOKE.. This was a favourite with the guys- in Japanese. Always brings back nice memories.

I was 13 at the time & when this song hit the US charts I think it suprised everyone. A full Japanese song with NO english translation consideration! It was such a pleasing - relaxing tune (no one knew or could sing the lyrics) that it just naturally fit in as an uplifting contrast to the pre-British rock-invasion music, that was about to hit our shores. In the same catagory as Nat King Cole's 'Lazy Hazy Days of Summer'.single. Teens were getting tired of that Beach Party rock & roll stuff!

Japan Airlines Flight 123 was a Japan Airlines domestic flight from Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) to Osaka International Airport (Itami). On Monday, August 12, 1985, the Boeing 747-146SR that made this route, registered JA8119, suffered mechanical failures 12 minutes into the flight and 32 minutes later crashed into two ridges of Mount Takamagahara,. All 15 crew members and 505 out of 509 passengers died, resulting in a total of 520 deaths and four survivors.
My recollection was that the Russian's shot down the airliner claiming that it was in Russian airspace and was a 'spy-plane'. Turned into a very tense international incident. Upon investigation of the radar screen analysis, it was ultimately determined that the Japanese airliner had not violated Russian airspace, but rather, Russian Top Gun Pilots who were too full of testosterone and ego. Such a shame, however this song will always remain so beautiful in spite of the tragic loss of Kyu.
@beaconmike I think you'll find you (like the Russians) got the wrong plane. It had a faulty repair to a rear bulkhead, which gave way, damaging the tail controls. It took 35 minutes to crash, killing everyone on board. RIP Kyu Sakamoto San.

I always enjoyed watching Kyu in TV - this song was a favorite of my Mothers & spending time in Japan in the early sixites where Kyu was a star - its a shame we lost him but am greatful to have this and other film of him.

Forgot to mention, that he is also retired from the USAF (a Major), with 23 years of service time! An hypnotic, sentimental favorite of mine. Here's " Sukiyaki", another staple of early FM stereo radio stations which helped fuel the boom in the popularity of component stereo sets in the late '60s. The song sounded very rich and layered, like some exotic pastry, to my young ears.

In the original Japanese text there are no words of Sukiyaki. Originally it is a love song: "When I look up at the Moon I think of you" or something like this. In 1964 (the year of the Tokyo Olympics) it was a big hit in Hungary together with "Sayonara Tokyo" sang by the same singer (Kyu Sakamoto).

So - it seems I was 21 when this was a hit. (I thought it was years earlier when I was kid.)
A very simple but really terrific song. We all used to hum it or sing it in the shower. Hahaha!

Thank you for the translation. I was eight when this song was popular in the U.S. I figured that all the adults knew what the words meant, but no one I knew had any idea (I was shocked!) No explanations were ever offered by the DJs, either. It took all of these years to finally learn the meaning of the lyrics. They clearly have nothing to do with food! Thanks again.

@2404daphne It's been said that Kyu Sakomoto hated the rebranding as Sukiyaki since it'd be like calling Moon River "Beef Stew" over in Japan. The original title is "Ue uw o muitw aruyu"(sp?).

Gosh, I remeber how much I loved this song when I was a child. - I teach third grade now, so I took this song to play for my class, thinking they wouldn't love it like I had. Boy was I wrong. They're always saying, "Play the funny song for us!"

I remember this song well; my son was 1 year old and I was 24, and in the USAF. He is now 49 and an executive with a major company. Forgot to mention, that he is also retired from the USAF (a Major), with 23 years of service time! My how the years fly by........but all of those years are erased by just listening to this one beautiful song. Ahhhhhh.

I heard this song as a child in the 60's, then loved it again by A taste of honey in the 70's and then again in the 80's by 4 pm. Three totally different versions of the same song though I think this one will always be my favorite as it reminds me of my Daddy. Thanks for posting it!

Heard it for the first time decades ago when I was a kid running alongg a beach in Singapore where grandpa operating a restaurant. It never left me. On and off, it pops in and out of my mind, esp whenever swamped over by works, or on flight to Japan...Thank you for this lovely song!

An hypnotic, sentimental favorite of mine. Here's " Sukiyaki", another staple of early FM stereo radio stations which helped fuel the boom in the popularity of component stereo sets in the late '60s. The song sounded very rich and layered, like some exotic pastry, to my young ears.

In the original Japanese text there are no words of Sukiyaki. Originally it is a love song: "When I look up at the Moon I think of you" or something like this. In 1964 (the year of the Tokyo Olympics) it was a big hit in Hungary together with "Sayonara Tokyo" sang by the same singer (Kyu Sakamoto).
